Watcha Watching? Tell me everything.

The Handmaiden by Park Chan-wook finally came out in the UK so I got to see it.

Really enjoyed it, good acting, solid story with lots small visual things that make a lot more sense once you know the whole story. I've recently found my attention span waning in longer films but this one kept me engrossed the whole time.

I thought the final scene went on for a tad too long but I can understand what he was going for, though it did wander into being voyeurist a bit

I just saw the new film with Emilia Clarke in it, a period ghost story called Voice from the Stone. There's been some buzz about it already, mainly built around Clarke's supposed full frontal nudity. In truth, she just shows her breasts a few times, but that's the best thing about the film. It's bad. 'How bad?', I hear you ask. Well, I like Clarke in Game of Thrones, but she gives one of the worst performances in this I've seen from anyone in ages. She pulls off the esoteric trick of simultaneously underacting and overacting. Imagine Keanu Reeves at his worst, but throw in a load of crazy eyebrows and overdone facial expressions. But the real problem with the film is that it's ploddingly slow paced, narratively thin, predictable and eventless, with an ending that goes totally nowhere. There's no chemistry between the leads. The photography is pretty, but that's it. I'm glad I caught it on a download instead of catching it at the cinema. A real stinker. Sorry to burst the bubble of anyone who wants to see it mainly because of Clarke.

On the other hand, I also watched Alejandro Jodorowsky's last film, Endless Poetry, earlier, and that is a genuine masterpiece.

That's too bad, I have a high tolerance for bad ghost stories, I was hoping it would at least be decent.  I don't think she's a very good actress, but maybe she will find her niche somehow, she certainly keeps getting roles.

I watched Dear White People and I really liked it. It managed to expand on the themes and plot-lines of the movie really well and added depth to characters who were kinda flat in the movie. Plus the cast was very good and the whole thing made for some good binging.

I also watched a South Korean movie called The Admiral: Roaring Currents which was about a naval battle during Japan's invasion of Korea in the late 16th century. It was pretty good. There wasn't a of of story and there were a lot of cliches, plus most of the characters were pretty flat (especially the antagonists). But it delivered some spectacular ship-on-ship mayhem, which was what I was primarily after.

I still like her, but this is a first time director, and she's been given free rein to lapse into a lot of really bad habits. Give it a go, though, but I suspect the critics will be with me on this when it gets a release.

Should one skip the movie then?

I see that this is directed by the same guy who did War of the Arrows, and will therefore have to hunt it down at some stage. That was a great action movie, in an Apocalypto vein.

IDK, I'd say it's up to you. They essentially cover the same ground but the show starts one the same note that the movie end on, so they are not entirely identical. It's a good movie though and well worth seeing on it's own. But you probably won't lose anything if you choose to watch the show over the movie.

I didn't watch the movie (because it's not on Netflix) and enjoyed the series a lot. I've read comparisons between the two and it doesn't sound like there would be much more to get out of the movie than the show. And the cast of the Netflix show is really good, with some great character development.

I watched Moonlight the other day. It got a lot of acclaim when it came out last year and lived up to it. It's a really touching story of a lost and confused boy growing up in Miami and I recommend to all. The acting is incredible too.

I also saw A Dark Song. A slow-burn, psychological horror/thriller about a woman who undertakes a black magic ritual for...reasons. The whole movie is basically her and the guy going through hell to complete this dark ritual but it actually works, mostly because of the actors' performances and the spooky atmosphere the director captured. I liked where they went with the ending too.

I finished Season 2 of Red Oaks. Enjoyable, light, coming of age series on Amazon Prime which I find perfect going into the summer. Wish Netflix had more coming of age stories.

Also watched Small Crimes which is is a short Netflix original starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Advertised as a dark comedy, it wasn't very funny. On a 1 to 5 scale it lands solidly in the middle at a rating of 2.5 for me. Not bad, not good, not great but not terrible.

Saw Black Sails is on Hulu.  Decided to start watching it.  Again, for like the fifth time.  Everyone loves this show.  I don't get it.  Is there an episode where it starts to get better because I'd definitely skip to that part if that's the case.  Perhaps pirates just aren't my thing?

I'm with you on this (not the pirates thing, just not liking Black Sails at all). Most people on this board have told me it improves a lot after Season 1. But I just had no interest in the plot or characters at all after finishing season 1 and at this point I've forgotten all about them so I imagine jumping back in to season 2 would be confusing and I can't face going back to season 1 again.

But yeah various people have said the first season was poor and it improves after that.

I certainly didn't. I made it about 5 or 6 episode before giving up.

It's definitely pretty bad for quite a while, but at some point it stops being glossy semi pornographic trash and becomes a lot more interesting. Not for everyone admittedly but if you like the time period, like pirates and adventure then it's a bloody great show

I got really really into it after awhile and you should definitely stick with it because there gets some really complex characterisation,  great interesting female characters and I dunno I just got obsessed with it for 2 weeks lmao I still haven't seen season 4 yet my brain shut down with how much I was watching ...so I stopped watching everything

Finished watching the Iron Fist series. I thought it got off to a very poor start in the first couple of episodes, then improved a bit as it went along - I thought the ending was better than the ending of Luke Cage even if I think it's a weaker series overall. I think the biggest problem was that Danny Rand was a really uninteresting character, I think I'd mostly blame the writing there, although Finn Jones was uncharismatic I find it difficult to blame him too much considering the material he was given. I think it would probably have been a more interesting show if it had focused on Colleen instead.
