Oh by the way, someone shot and killed an 8 year old (of course it's USA)

Story is still developing, but a man came to his wife's workplace, shot and killed her, and also wounded 2 school kids, an 8 year old and a 9 year old. The 8 year old died. The 9 year old is in critical condition but seems to be stable. The man then shot himself before police could arrive.

There will tbe usual hand-wringing about the need to do something to protect children. Then followed by a chorus of we should politicize the tragedy. To be then followed in turn by protestation that this an isolated incident committed by an unstable person, and then we will see links to sites showing how people have safely and successfully used guns to protect themselves, then we will hear about the need to arm our teachers in public schools, and then we will hear about how this man wasn't even a Responsible Gun Owner {tm} and how dare we generalize about all gun owners based on this one data point.

So, all in all, just another day in America.

America, fuck yeah!

Take the guns away. I just heard on the news about an 8 year old girl being shot in the throat after playing with a gun. How stupid do you have to be to be denied the privilege on firearm ownership?

By Sandyhook the country had decided guns were more important than children.

So this happened in San Bernadino, CA? This is a rerun.*

*Crying, screaming, yelling, arguing, bargaining, begging, I've done all that, all that's left is jaded sarcasm.

So, given that taking the guns away is simply out of the question (if you think you can do it, you need to broaden your media experience), what else can be done? After all, guns were more prevalent in prior times (and one could even own fully automatic versions), but this kind of violence was not as common. This is not to say that it was non-existent -- the deadliest school massacre ever was in 1927 and barely involved a gun -- but from reading the various lists, it definitely appears to be more rare (though actual comparisons across long periods of time are hard to find). Why do these incidents occur so often today?

Some of it might be the media and the "glorification" of the culprit.  His  name, picture and any views he had get shown to everyone.

I have a theory that if every time we replaced the culprits name with   "some twerp"   and did not identify him in any way to mention his manifesto (whatever  - or mention as a vague little footnote)   but concentrate the reporting on the vicitms and what they did, and what they stood for.  It might help?

The other thing you could do is invest in mental health.  but hey that costs money and sounds like evil socialism.

I feel for the parents of the children and hope the 9 year old has a speedy recovery.  I'm just so so tired of it, I don't have the energy to be outraged anymore.  I know now that nothing will change.  the US will try nothing, and the same shit will happen again and again.

Yeah we've collectively agreed, as a country, that the right to bear arms or whatever is worth the cost of kids getting shot all the time, of police officers having the legal latitude to kill without much justification other than they were a-scared of the young black man who could've had a gun, etc.  Super fucked up that this is the hand we're all playing.  Especially for the dead kids and their loved ones.  But hey fuck it at least I can blast off rounds like a cowboy.

[drunken reply more closely linked with my own state of mind than the facts of the case]

Another white man trying to take his power back.  The gun, the collateral damage (yes, I mean the dead 8 year old) are incidental to the purpose of 'how dare she leave me'?

There are many ways we can go about the business of preventing this sort of incident but I think the root of the problem has more to do with privilege than guns. (I know I will now be characterized as a 'gun apologist' or '2nd Amendment nut job' or a 'man hater' but that's what you get when you post in a public internet forum.)

Well it's true though - this is just another man who has KILLED his spouse/ex for leaving him. So of course this is gonna be a gun issue because he used a gun in a school that ended up killing s small child but I see this as just another man who felt totally entitled to 'his woman' and killed her (and also a child) when she left him. Disgusting  and people can say "not all men!" And that's true and I know it is true but I say TOO MANY men.

Drunk again, similar state of mind...

Should we rejoice that more murder/suicides are racially diverse?  (that's progress)

Isn't the sense of powerlessness linked to the idea that 'I would rather die than live in a world where she has the right to leave me'?

I'm 'utterly wrong' because I said 'white man' instead of 'man'?  Apologies but the Trump election is still rattling my cage.

Am I 'utterly wrong' because I think male privilege is a larger issue than gun laws or school security? Maybe if he had killed her privately without involving her school class we could just sweep it under the rug.  That's the American Way.

A lot of people you meet on the internet think that the issue that most affects them is the issue that most affect the world. That's the Internet Way.

I'm not sure if Gun laws and school security are a bigger issue than male privilege.  They are all big issues and I think often rather overlapping in many area's.

however I think male privilege may be an easier problem to solve or at least make progress on.
