Maester Saramello
In the books I imagined them as thick paperclips that intertwine to make a nice, yet slightly uncomfortable necklace. I have recently began watching the shows on a regular basis(have read all the books already) and a question from when I first began watching it a year ago popped into my head. The chains are F***ing huge. How in any of the seven hells can anyone walk around with a dozen enormous chains? Just look at this redicularity! http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/gameofthrones/images/8/81/Maester_Luwin.png/revision/latest?cb=20160516060627&path-prefix=de I know the show has become rather tone deaf to The Song of Ice and Fire but what were they smoking when they decided to give the Maester chain Viagra? silverthorndale
They wanted to do it so they did it. And that's a catch-all excuse for most of the show's many blunders. It does look cool so I see why they went with that decision.
1000th Lord Commander
I too imagine the maester's chains as a lot smaller in size. I can't remember the exact quote, but they are also quite tight around the neck, if memory serves. Anyone got the books handy to look it up? Correct, the chains in the books are tight collars around the neck. Almost every maester is described as having chains that "dig into the skin." The only exception (and the one closest to the show masters) is Pycelle, who has so many chains that they dangle over his chest.
PrinceHenryris
I guess it's kind of related so I'll ask it here. Do some Maesters have to earn more links than others before their chain is complete? Marwyn is called "The Mastiff" and is described as having a large head and thick neck. Would he have had to earn more links than someone built like Alleras before his chain would have been be considered complete?

I don't think we've ever gotten a complete answer to how many links a novice needs to forge before they are called a maester. Hopefully Sam's story fleshes things out a little more. But considering that we've never had any indication that the links have to be the same size, maybe Marwyn could forge longer links? Just a thought
White Ravens
If the links are all joined to make a continuous chain loop then the resulting chain would have to be big enough to slip over your head. Human head diameters don't vary nearly as much as necks so the maesters probably have a standard number of links that they all need to earn before rising from the status of acolyte to that of maester. But if it is easier to earn your chain because you are slim there are probably many acolytes who pursue links in physical fitness and nutrition.
