U.S. Politics: Comey, Comey, Comey, Comey, Comey Chameleon

Recommended Posts

I am seeing Trump's presidency finishing in normal fashion less and less. I think Trump is burning himself out, he either has enough and walks away or he tries cementing himself in more as dictator than president, he's only got two speeds full on my way or no way. Then of course impeachment is an outcome too. Impeachment seems to have been a higher speculated subject at the start of Trump's presidency than other presidents, or maybe I'm in too much of a bubble. Is impeachment being thought of more seriously now or at all? Does the word "treason" start to subtly work its way into discourse?

Republicans may be reaching their breaking point with Trump
There was a distinct shift among GOP lawmakers after news that the president allegedly pressured James Comey to drop an FBI investigation.

Seriously, you can't make this shit up.......

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump had not passed any secrets onto Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in Washington last week and that he could prove it.

Speaking at a news conference alongside Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, Putin quipped that Lavrov had not passed what he said were the non-existent secrets onto him either.

Putin said Russia was ready to hand a transcript of Trump's meeting with Lavrov over to U.S. lawmakers if that would help reassure them.

Gee, thanks for helping us out Vlad.     :bang:

But, but, we're getting tax cuts!

So what’s the problem here people!

Republican lawmakers are stuck in the same Donald Trump cycle they’ve come to know too well.

They are in the middle of yet another White House scandal; President Trump reportedly revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister last week, and his administration can’t get the story straight on whether or not it even happened.

In past scandals, the cycle then unfolds this way: Republican allies rally to the president’s side to varying degrees — some saying the incident is nothing, others saying they’re “concerned.” Some call for more information, to avoid settling on a response.

I have no clue about the legalities here. Nada. None. Zilch. Still an interesting read:

https://www.theregreview.org/2017/05/17/slesinger-weissman-unconstitutional-executive-order/

Quote

Soon after taking office, President Donald Trump issued an unconstitutional executive order requiring administrative agencies to repeal at least two regulations for each new regulation they create. The Natural Resources Defense Council, Public Citizen, and the Communications Workers of America, working with Earthjustice, have sued to block this illegal action.

Quote

The executive order considers only industry’s complaints about the cost of regulations; it never factors in the cost to the public of the government’s failing to act. As far as the executive order is concerned, the negative impacts of, say, air or water pollution, or climate change, simply do not exist. The order completely ignores the concept of an “externality.”

Me thinks, no Republican understands the concept of externality or has even heard the word.

Relevant to corporate tax reform and the Republican Party's big hope for it.

Research by economists Peter Chen and Brent Neiman at the University of Chicago and Loukas Karabarbounis at the University of Minnesota shows that the trend is global in nature. Corporations across high-income countries have increased their savings rates and are now lending more to the global economy than they are investing in their own operations.

Quote

How would a reduction in the corporate income tax change this situation? Potentially, a lower rate could induce some companies to boost their investments. Greg Ip at The Wall Street Journal looks at some international evidence on corporate tax cuts and finds that they seem to have boosted investment, though the effects on total growth are more muted.

Quote

And in the United States, it appears that when corporations do spend money, they are increasingly using funds for buying stocks from shareholders or increasing dividends.

Quote

What, then, is behind the rise in corporate savings? Looking at research on the trend in the United States, the corporate savings problem seems to be caused less by a corporate tax rate that is “too high” and more by increased consolidation within industries and among shareholders. In the U.S. economy, both industry consolidation and “common ownership” of companies by institutional investors and mutual funds are more and more prevalent. Interestingly, the research by Chen, Karabarbounis, and Neiman finds that declines in corporate taxation actually pushed corporate savings up.

Wait, wait, I thought tax cuts were supposed to 'unleash' the economy and create  tsunami of growth, jobs and ponies for everyone!  What are these corporations doing saving money?  That's for Sabian housewives to do.

If only there was a young, dashing, poli sci nerd who could have predicted this 48 hours ago......

:rolleyes::P

Also, per PPP:

Quote

4 If the candidates for President next time were Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson running as a Democrat and Republican Donald Trump, who would you vote for?

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson 42% ...........................

Donald Trump 37% .................................................

Not sure 21%

Now for a dark prediction, here's the nightmare scenario for the next few years:

-2017: Republicans pass a delayed version of the AHCA that keeps the $800 billion-$1 trillion in tax cuts.
-2017/18: Trump is impeached.
-2018: President Pence signs into law a 10 year tax cut, largely for the super rich, in the range of $800 billion-$1 trillion.
-2018: Republicans lose or narrowly hold the House, hold, and possibly make gains in the Senate.
-2019-2020: Economy has a sugar high from said tax cuts.
-2020: Democrats win White House, only one chamber of Congress.
-2021: Awful effects of AHCA kick in
-2021-2024: Republicans obstruct on health care, make Democrats responsible for the fallout.
-2024: Republicans regain unified control of government, this time without an insane person in the White House.
-2024-: The American people lose even more of their rights, while the super rich continue to feast on the poor and what remains of the middle class.

It does feel like things very slowly started turning the corner among elected Republicans last night.

But I thought the same thing after the Access Hollywood tape came out, and we all know how that turned out. So I'm waiting for there to be a real concrete action, like a special prosecutor being named, before saying anything has actually changed.

It would probably involve the Donald talking every two minutes about the gold drapes he installed in the WH, and about how he won the EC every 5 minutes, with the Russians valiantly trying to steer the conversation back to Assad and ISIS.

Also, while Comey may have acted ....not the best way before the elections, he seems just like the kind of person (based on his somewhat rigid personality) to keep detailed paper trails and memos and whatnot, to bite Trump in the ass. The latter still hasnt realized the difference between running government and a business, and not all those who report to you are supposed to do exactly what you tell them to do.

I am stil ROFLing over Putin offering a transcript of that WH meeting.

I'm wondering what he has on audio and video recording from that meeting.  Certainly he has the entire meeting recorded and not just written notes.
