 I think there are some major twists left before the end, and not just R+L=J, which will mix this all up anyway...

and who has the best claim is not at all the same question as who I think will end up on the Iron Throne. Not to mention that there aren't many Lords left I'd expect to care more about the intricacies of inheritence traditions then they do about practical gain.

so ya, I'd say it's pretty academic.

I agree we will have more major twists before the end, and I would predict at least one will include a major twist on the reality of Aegon's claim to the throne. And we haven't even got to the point where Jon would know he could have a claim to the throne. As these developments play out, we will learn a lot more about the legal basis each character really has or does not have. All of which seems fairly central to the story.
