U.S. Politics: A Democracy In Decay

I've read that too, and I would have expected the last holdouts to be Collins and Murkowski.  Paul has always been a pushover on votes that actually matter.  If this goes down because of 3-4 senators and Paul is one of them, I'll be very surprised.

I don't know, Paul's always been the most out in front in terms of GOP criticism of the bill - including today.  He also is the least likely to feel beholden to Trump voters, or the GOP leadership which he has a particular hatred for.

Sounds like he's gonna be in charge of all of comms.  But Bannon still get to call him fatty, apparently.

My partisan blinders make it very difficult for me to understand either.  I get why some people would hate Obamacare - it imperfectly solves some of the problems of the American Health Care system, fails to solve others, and is very disruptive and cumbersome to boot.  But Trumpcare is just an astonishingly bad solution to either the problems remaining in the Health Care system (spiraling costs, rampant waste) or the problems of Obamacare (limited choices, poorly structured incentives).  It is hard for me to believe that even a majority of Republicans (citizens, not Senators) will actually support this bill once they figure out what is in it.  Let alone the rest of the country, who by and large already hate it.

I believe the plan is to pass it quickly and as quietly as possible, and meanwhile lie about what it does constantly. And to delay the worst parts to protect moderates. The citizens don't get a direct vote. Also, many of them are perfectly happy getting their healthcare cut, as long as gays and women are punished enough for them.

If it passes it's going to be pretty horrible in the short term. In the long term, it may set off a bidding war that is not advantageous to Republicans. If people notice there are massive healthcare cuts every time the Republicans get into power that may move the needle some. In fact that may be why Republican elites are so desperate to get rid of the Obamacare Medicaid expansion...because it worked so well and makes what they consider to be socialism appealing to Americans. It may be quite hard to put things back into the box though now that Obama let it out.

They finally released the dash cam footage for the Philando Castile Shooting.

I do not have the words.

I just watched it.  I heard an interview with one of the jurors who said the jury was stuck at 8-4 (didn't say which way), but that Yanez just seemed like an honest man, and that's why they voted to acquit.

I wonder how perfectly I could deliver a line about how I feared for my life after a year of practice.

This was a cruel parody of justice.  How anyone watched that video and saw it as anything other than criminal is mind-boggling.

He panicked.  He absolutely panicked.  A man died because he couldn't keep his cool.

Yep.  He panicked and murdered a guy.

But hey, he lost his job, so I guess that's time served to that jury.

Technically you can't murder someone in a panic.  That element of "passion" makes it manslaughter.

Oops.  He panicked and manslaughtered a guy.

Why is Chrome underlining that?  It's the technically correct term.

I should know better.  In a fit of passion, despite being a highly-trained English teacher, I chose an incorrect word.  Luckily, no one lost their life because of my mistake.  Just for karma's sake, though, perhaps I should be imprisoned?

What the absolute fuck?

Remember that one bill that was overwhelmingly passed in a rare show of agreement between R's and D's? That bill that restricts Trump's power when it comes to Russia sanctions?

Apparently it was just blocked by Ways and Means. Jesus, can't they let us have at least *some* nice things?

Welp the DCCC has now successfully lost four elections due to terrible weak strategy and terrible gutless coaching. Considering the only approach they have for 2018 is to target orange county (and nothing but orange county) I'm now expecting republicans to gain seats in the house in the midterms.

Fire the DCCC. terrible coach, does nothing but lose.

Uh - 19% reporting, and Handel has a mighty 1.6% lead. It's not exactly completed here.

What's really interesting to me is that the SC race is also really tightly contested despite it supposedly not being particularly competitive, where with about 70% reporting the Republican candidate has a 3% lead.

This video makes me feel sick.

Where are all the 2A supporters?  Where's the NRA on this one?  I don't get why the gun hogs aren't up in arms over this one.  (OK, I get it, it's because he's black, but still, fuck those motherfuckers).

If Dems perform half as well in the rest of the House elections as they seem to be doing in the SC one right now, they take the House. What do you know that we don't?
