Why Aerys killed Brandon?

Absolutely, but I still belive that the Targaryens should continue the incest because the major reason why the dragonlords practiced incest in the first place was because they wanted to make their blood purer thereby making it easier for them and their children to bond with and ride dragon. If the Targaryens had stopped practicing incest after coming to Westeros then future Targaryens might otherwise not have been able to ride dragons due to their blood being to diluted, then the dragons will be useless since there will be no one to ride them. There's a reason Targs are different from others.

This is not supported by any text at all. The Targaryens were not/are not the only peoples with special blood. In truth, Daenerys is only about 1/16th (or something) "pure" Valyrian blood, and even less if you get into the unnecessary maths of the fact that Aegon the Conq's mother was half Valyrian blood, but the Valaryon's had left Valyria before the Targaryens did, so her blood was probably mixed by this point anyway.

And it seems to be shown in the examples of other peoples of Westeros that blood dilution may not be a thing. That doesn't seem a concern for literally everyone else on that continent that has special blood and none of them practice incest to preserve anything. The incest thing turns out to be about controlling your ruling/financial/elitist power, as well as your spouse. If the incest was necessary to keep the blood strong, the dragons would not have withered and died out. Something in the magics of Planetos happened and the magics seemed to have disappeared together.

But, we have diverged from the main topic and we should get back on track

ADDING very quickly because I was curious if anyone had actually done the math, and it looks like someone has, and Dany is running very low in actual Valyrian blood (she has only about 1%), which may be part of the bigger point of the story George is telling > words are wind, and bastards are just a good as everyone else, and so on.

I think when Dany finally manages to take the throne she should enact laws barring any of her future descendants from sitting the throne if they are found to be insane, thus preventinh another potential Aerys 2.0 and Robert's Rebellion 2.0 as well.

And who is to be the judge of the level of insanity that it takes to be considered a tyrant and therefore worthy of disposal? Will there be a color coordinated system that goes from green, to orange, to yellow, to plaid?

Just one answer: Brown Ben Plumm and Nettles

He has not ridden any dragons (yet), but the dragons sure liked him. He's part Braavosi, Dothraki, and whatnotwhat and his great-great-grandparents were Targs.

Even inf Nettles was a dragonseed, she sure as hell wasn't a pure blooded incest Targ.

Why did Aerys have Brandon die in the manner he did?

Brandon was a threat.

In what way? We don't yet know. We do know he was up in arms about the "abduction" of Lyanna by Rhaegar.

Was Brandon privy to information Ashara Dayne shared with him at Harrenhal about Aerys?

And the bold... this is something that intrigues me enormously. By all accounts, Rhaegar was an intelligent and sensible man, with a profound sense of duty. And we get this from many different characters: Selmy, Ned, Jaime etc. The only person to ever speak poorly of Rhaegar is Robert. How then, did he [apparently] make quite a few spectacularly stupid mistakes?

Because he thinks he's protected by prophecy, and that as the father of the "dragon with three heads" the universe will intervene to save him.  He's one of Martin's trope inversions.  Jon and Dany and Tyrion earn their heroism, proving it's difficult and unpleasant and the world doesn't make way for the anointed one.  Rhaegar is the fantasy archetype, who thinks he has invincible plot armor because he's destined to help save the world.  Stannis, by the way, is the opposite - the guy who is told he's the savior, doesn't really believe it, but goes ahead anyway because its the right thing to do.  And I think he burns Shireen alive as the sacrifice to win, and finds out he did it all for the right reasons, but in vain.

His bad decisions are driven by his blind faith in prophecy, and his melancholy (read: emo) nature doesn't allow him to share that belief, which might mitigate some of his really awful crimes.
