Hard for him to be a specialist spinner when your captain doesn't support you or give you field placings to support some aggressive bowling. Just my two cents.

Just wondering how the two sides are shaping up for the ODI series? I've been out of the loop and am finding myself attending the MCG match on the 14th.

The England side shouldn't bear too many Ashes scars - I think Root, Bairstow and Ali are the only test regulars in the ODI team. I'm not sure who will appear for the Aussies. The likes of Handscomb, Wade, Head and Faulkner (who all played in the last ODI series against India) will probably be replaced. I'd expect The Big Show and Adam Zampa to surface again.

The Big Game? That's Maxwell isn't it?

Yeah, the ODI sides will be quite different for both teams I expect.

Australian squad just announced: Smith, Warner, Cummins, Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Paine, Starc are all from the Test team. However I'm sure Cummins/Starc/Hazlewood will be rested during the series at some point. That leaves room for Finch, Head, Lynn, Stoinis, Zampa, Richardson and Starc. Zampa's the only frontline spinner I think.

Hopefully the Sydney Test turns out to be a cracker!

It looks like England are going with two spinners in the form of Moeen and Crane, with the injured Chris Woakes making way. It'll be interesting to see how Crane goes, the Ashes is a tough place to make a debut - neither of the last couple of English spinners to make a debut in an Ashes Test, Simon Kerrigan and Stuart Borthwick, have played for England again.

Crane a pretty ordinary selection for mine. I can see the logic of trying to play an attacking spinner at the SCG, but it’s still a very tough situation in which to debut. Australia on top. Smith cruising again.

England will be disappointed with a first innings of 346 - Root/Malan had it set up to be much more.

Still, Australia aren't exactly blowing them away. Have a couple of good spells of bowling, including getting Smith out, and the batting 6-11 is still fairly weak. While Starc and Cummins at 8/9 are good value, I still suspect Mitch Marsh at 6 and Tim Paine at 7 are not the toughest outs in cricket.

Crane bowled okay and taking two spinners at the SCG is fine, but both Crane and Ali don't really have the Test-level skill or current form to deal with international lineups. Australians aren't even particularly good players of spin (witness all the collapses on the Sri Lanka tour) but no spinner has troubled them in this series.

I think Australia plays spin consistently well at home, almost to the point of making it futile to play a spinner that doesn’t fit the Maharaj mould of keeping up an end. They made Yasir Shah (a quality player IMO) look pedestrian last season.

Good point.

Signs looking ominous for England today. It's going to be a very hot day (not a good day to be out in the field bowling) and Smith and Khawaja look well set. At this rate (trailing by 88 with 8 wickets in hand), Australia will be planning to get a big first innings lead and if a few of their batsmen can push on, they may look to essentially bat just the once.

Yeah England have blown this one. The two wickets late on Day 1 have proved to be as fatal as they seemed to be at the time. Root’s reaction to his dismissal said it all.

ETA: Go South Africa! I let out a little “whoop” when I saw that Morkel nailed Virat early.

Yeah, tough on Crane - but it was correctly called a no-ball. Cricinfo saying that England don't lose a review when it's called a no-ball, which I think is sensible given the umpires are meant to be responsible for calling them.

England being made to suffer for not batting long into the second day - conditions are good enough that even 400/450 was probably a sub-par score. I’d not be too surprised if Australia bats only once.

Pretty frustrated with this series and tbh will be glad when it’s over.
