My guess is they actually imbued the obsidian with the magic to turn a human in a WW and to kill the WW (wouldn't be very smart to create a weapon like that without having a way to destroy it). But yeah, why did the WW turn? Or maybe it's not so much that they turned, but that they evolved to the point the children couldn't control them anymore, like the Cylons in Battleship Galactica. The patterns came from their creators, the Children of the Forest. These patterns are leading us to what the WW's want, and they want the CotF. On a timeline it doesnt make sense, the long night didn't occur til around 8,000 years ago but they had lived in peace with the First Men for 2,000 years after signing the Pact on the Isle of Faces. It would make sense the Children made them around 10,000 years ago, but it took them that long to form their army. So when eventually the WW's got round to doing what they were made for the CotF didnt need them to as there was peace. The CotF lost control and the Long Night ensued and the Battle for the Dawn had to take place. I imagine when creating them then used a fail safe, that the WW could be killed with the very material that created them. This was pretty evident as they gave 100 obsidian daggers each year and every year to follow. This also showed they knew they had won but the WW's were not completely destroyed but they had retreated. What is interesting is what obsidian means... '' Obsidian is a very protective stone, and is excellent for removing negativity. It is also excellent protection against psychic attacks. In particular obsidian protects the gentle from abuse, and is used to cut attachment cords to release one. It is a very grounding stone, and very healing.''
