xander_blackfyre
Only mentioned in passing but seems like quite the important character, I have noticed lots of people keep mistaking the books that Gilly and Sam were reading through as the works of maester, but they were in fact the his journals. If he kept such detailed records I would wager to bet there is more in that journal than just a mention of an annulment and marriage. Most likely the reason for the annulment and who he married are recorded. As he was the High Septon he most likely married Rheagar and Elia, he must have also been privy to just how their marriage was going if he then annulled the marriage and married Rhaegar and Lyanna. It would seem that he was very loyal to Rhaegar if he would keep such information a secret, even after his death, he also stayed silent during the time the war was raging and perhaps he tells Ser Gerold Hightower where to find Rhaegar and later Ned when he had to find his sister as he was the only person in Kings Landing that had seen him in all that time. It is also clear that Lyanna and Rheagar running off was not some spur of the moment thing it seems that it took months of planning and there were more people involved than just those we know. The high septon would have had to know where Rheagar was going if he was going to give an annulment and perform a marriage.
Wmarshal
I just want to know if it was meant to be a big secret why he sent the journal to the citadel to be read and copied and how wasn't this discovered the second a maester got his hands on it. Lucius Lovejoy
Howland Reed or Bran would make way more sense as revealers of the truth about Rhaegar/Elia/Lyanna's love triangle than a septon keeping a secret journal that isn't secret at all, so of course the show went with the least logical solution. I suppose High Septon Maynard's journal could have only been recovered after his death.
Lord Varys
The entire setting is laughable. For one, High Septons give up their given names - just as septons give up their family names -, which means this guy wouldn't ever have called himself 'High Septon Maynard'. In addition, there is about zero chance that the High Septon was with Rhaegar and Lyanna in Dorne. The High Septon is a very important person. There is no need for an annulment in the books since Rhaegar could simply have tried to take a second wife without annulling his previous marriage. And any septon could have officiated at such a ceremony. He may not have considered it legal and all, but you certainly can force such people to do your bidding when you are a Targaryen prince. SansaJonRule
Something like that would surely not have been sent to the Citadel before his death. And where does it say it was ever copied? They could have been reading the original. And it doesn't seem like a journal would have been of great interest to other maesters since it wasn't written for the intent of education or a formal record of events.
