Scenario: Robert dies of his wounds after killing Rhaegar

Recommended Posts

An interesting hypothetical. Robert takes the throne much due to his inherent popularity, as much as his faint Targ blood. If Robert dies, the rebels might bend the knee, but to who? Viserys is the lone claimant to the throne, although Stannis may feel his claim is the right one and press it. I could see something like Stannis marrying Dany after Viserys is killed, to unite all the claims. But the true power in the kingdom would be in the hands of Ned, Jon and Tywin.

What would most likely happen if the Trident was still a victory for the rebels, but Robert dies of his wounds a day after the battle. Word would not reach anyone in time to stop Aerys from getting killed or Ned from arriving to find Tywin sacking King's Landing while Jaime sits the Iron Throne. Aerys, Elia, and her children are all dead. Now word comes that Robert is dead.

What happens now?

Space aliens plant secret devices throughout Westeros that alter everyone's memories leaving the exact same story that we have all read and re-read over the last two decades, thus saving us all from alternate versions written by fans and amateurs who believe that they could have done a better job than the GRRM.

It's definitely not a forgone conclusion that Stannis would be king.....someone else entirely might be king.  When the Lannisters sacked the city their was some confusion as to whom would be announced the new king.  I bet Jon Arryn or Ned would've been pushed to take the throne if Robert had died.  Ned wouldn't want it but Jon may have taken it.

Jon Arryn is too old to be king. He’s got no heir at this point and if he dies without one then he would send Westeros into anarchy.

In my opinion, everything depends on whether Robert is able to convince the Starks-Tully-Arryn to bend the knee before he dies. If the answer is yes, then Stannis will take the crown. If not, then things get complicated.

Robert B is the only person in the coalition who hates the Targs. The rest fought because they were

a-    given no choice (Ned, Robert initially etc
b-    Out of honour (Jon A)
c-    Out of brotherly respect (Stannis)
d-    Because they grew stronger out of it (Hoster)

With Robert out of the picture, Ned learning the truth at the tower of joy and Stannis becoming LP of the Stormlands then there’s every chance that the rebels will relent

a-    Stannis is as straight as an arrow. He would go through hell and back for what is his by right but will not usurp something that is not his

b-    Stannis has no quarrel with the Targs. He fought against them because his liege Lord ordered him to do so. Now that his liege lord/brother is dead in what was considered a fair fight, the war is good as over. Rhaella is innocent, she’s a helpless widow and she’s his cousin.

c-    Stannis will probably support Ned’s zero tolerance against the Lannisters especially in terms of the Kingslayer. How dare do they take matters on their hands? His zero tolerance might convince his own cousin at dragonstone to return to KL bringing the loyalists and the rebels together.

Ned would claim it and be the King regent until the rightful king Jon came of age. The northerners would be fine with putting another Targaryen on the throne because he would be heavily influenced by his connection to Ned and be half a Northerner, the rest of the realm would be fine putting the rightful king on the throne, and Ned guides the transition. Dany and Visery's can be welcomed back and made Lords.

Robert dying is actually the best case scenario.

but there is still the lannisters to consider. tywin is always looking to advance the prospects of his house, even at the cost of others, hell, especially at the cost of others, because their loss is often his gain. well, the tyrell are much the same in that respect, but they are just more cautious and patient. but what would tywin demand of the new regime in order to keep the lannisters from continuing the war while everyone else is still recovering. and what about dorn and the martells? while a aegon on the throne is acceptable to them, with the first son of rhaegar being have martell, but jon isnt, and i think a lot of people would blame lyanna, and by extension jon, for the war and elia's death, especially down in dorn. so the martells might demand a few concessions as well, though with far more legitmate cause than the lannisters.
