Which city is the most populated in essos?

Of course it's one of volantis,braavos,asshai,meereen or some eastern city i did not mention but which one?

Probably Volantis, though Qarth could give it a run for its money.

I was inclined to say either Volantis or Qarth, but, according to aDwD, Volantis has been heavily depopulated over the centuries.  We don't know if its even still the most populous of the Free Cities, the text is ambiguous on that point (either it still is, even after suffering depopulation worth noting, or it merely used to be).  Therefore, I vote Qarth.

Asshai has the population of a small town

Volantis. It's still the most populous of the Free Cities, and it commands a substantial population outside the city itself (three "towns" each with a larger population than KL or Oldtown). Volantis is smaller than it was, but it used to be absolutely gargantuan. It's still pretty big now.

Qarth may rival it, but I suspect the only candidates for cities that are more populous are the cities of Yi Ti.
