UFT Posted August 27, 2017 Share Posted August 27, 2017 this is one of his more heavily criticised moves in the show and thus he largely gets the square of the blame for how many on his side died. so what if he didnt? just rode back to his lines and stuck with the plan to hold a defensive encircling formation? would their losses be anywhere near as great given the arryns would come soon anyway? The King Of Cooked Steak Posted August 27, 2017 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Historically IRL, the battle tactic Jon proposed has proven useful, as it can give advantage to smaller armies (Cannae, Marathon). Jon's army could've routed the Bolton army or at least held them off, until the Knights of the Vale came to aid. There would've been losses, but surely not as many as the ones suffered during the actual battle. The actual battle was a tactical trainwreck for Jon. averde Posted August 28, 2017 Share Posted August 28, 2017 Jon Snows function at that point was as a leader and focal point for a cause. He had brought together a conglomerate of northern forces united by him. He risked dying before his forces even made it to him, most likely resulting in the route of his army before the fighting even began.
