Am I remembering wrong, or was the Golden Company breaking its contract (the first time ever) to go fight FOR Dany in the books?

Plus I also find it humorous that D&D have doubled their size.

Yes, you're remembering wrong, or at least off at a tangent. They broke the contract with Myr to fight for Young Griff. Trying to rescue and marry Dany was part of Illyrio's original plan, but after meeting Tyrion, and learning that Dany had stayed in Meereen instead of moving on to Volantis, they went and invaded Westeros directly instead.

There is a red herring along the way that makes you think Dany may have somehow hired them. Aurane Waters reports a rumor that the GC broke their contract with Myr to fight for Stannis, but Cersei says she has reliable reports from Qyburn that they're on their way to Volantis to fight for someone else. During the years waiting for ADwD, some fans speculated that Dany might have somehow hired them.

Meanwhile, the first time Dany hears of the GC, she remembers that Viserys once spent all their money feasting the GC captains in hopes of getting them to fight for the cause, but they ate his food, laughed at him, and left.

Hear this prophecy:

The leader of the golden company coming to Westeros will be Daario Naharis. Why you ask?
Because they wont include Connington, and they love the triangle drama of an insulted lover overseas vs the treetrunk Jon Snow (alias Aegon Targaryen). + Daario never died, people that don't die usually show up again no?

Ah, gotcha.  But is the reason they're fighting for Young Griff their belief that he's the true Targaryen heir to the throne?  That's more what I was thinking of.  They would only break contract if they were fighting for a Targ heir.  So are D&D just using Golden Company in Name Only, or if this truly is the Golden Company, are they just going to get all the way to KL and join Dany's side?  This reeks of D&D once again artificially making Cersei's position stronger than it has any right to be.  (see: Euron and his stealth fleet).

Mh, am I the only one who thinks the Golden Company will be lead by Daario Naharis? Just my feeling, there is not much logic behind it but it's one of the few persons on the other side we had enough screen time with (so it would be stupid to not get a character we are invested in - D&D) and we could get a "he's feeling wronged by Dany" against " he's still in love with dany" to make a power shift when need be...

First, I think D&D's motivation is simpler: They're building their story around the list of "major plot beats" that GRRM gave them. They've decided to divide up the major pieces of fAegon's story among Cersei, Dany, and Jon. The "using the GC to defend the kingdom against Dany" part has to go somewhere, and Cersei is the only option, so Cersei gets the GC to defend against Dany.

As for why they're fighting for Young Griff in the books, and whether the show is changing something unwarrantedly, that's a little mysterious until (probably) the next book.

The GC are basically the Blackfyre army in reserve, biding their time as sellswords until they can replace Daeron's line with a Blackfyre heir. So it's more than a little weird that they'd be excited about replacing a usurper with someone from Daeron's line. Which is why there are so many fan theories about fAegon being a secret Blackfyre, or Illyrio manipulating the GC into believing he's a secret Blackfyre when he isn't, etc. In which case the show is just simplifying things—fighting against Daeron's descendant Dany is a thing Blackfyre supporters might reasonably do.

That being said, the Blackfyre theories are only fan theories. Going only with what we're actually told on the surface, they certainly seem to believe Young Griff is Rhaegar's son. they proclaim him Aegon VI under that identity, and they're even happy with the plan to marry him to Rhaegar's sister Dany (until Dany decides to stay in Meereen instead of coming to Volantis). Why? Who knows? Maybe the Blackfyre line is extinguished, which means that, ironically, Aegon and Dany are actually Daemon's best heirs? In which case D&D are changing the story without a good motivation.

And maybe there are other explanations we don't know enough to intuit yet. For example, maybe Homeless Harry (who we're repeatedly told is a money guy, not a warrior, and JonConn thinks he's a coward) doesn't give a damn about the Blackfyres the way his predecessors did, and he just broke the contract with Myr because Illyrio offered him even more gold than the Volantenes did. That doesn't seem very likely, but it's not impossible, and in that case, D&D aren't changing anything except who had the boatload of gold.

So, we really won't know how whether it was a reasonable merging, or whether they went too far and screwed things up, until TWoW.
