What if Jeoffry survives the Purple Wedding?

Lets assume for this that the Strangler hadn't been in Jeoffry's wine but was instead in Tyrions pie and was an attempt to kill him either by Cersei to kill the Little Brother or Littlefinger to free up Sansa for marriage.

I found a more detailed theory on this but it's since been deleted. It shows evidence that the wine was not poisoned at the Purple Wedding but it was instead Tyrions pie.

Unlike when Cressen took the Strangler the effect wasn't immediate and Jeoffry was able to speak and eat the pie, which is when he when became unable to speak.

Margary and Jeoffry were also drinking from the same chalice, making it dangerous for the Tyrells to be behind the plot in the book.

So what if Jeoffry hadn't taunted Tyrion at his wedding or at least hadn't eaten his pie and instead survived, with Tyrion dying instead.

What impact would all of this have on the story going forward?

The "evidence" for the poison being in the pie instead of the wine fails to take into account the issue of ionic polarity in the solubility of crystals.

That said, if Tyrion dies instead of Joffrey, it's a whole different ballgame.

With Tyrion dead, Oberyn doesn't die, Tywin doesn't die (and might be able to get a handle on Joffrey). Sansa might actually be able to marry Willas Tyrell if Olenna and company move fast enough while Tywin is dealing his son's death. Jaime gets forced out of the KG so CR has an heir, which means he also has to marry someone and produce an heir.

Those are the immediate issues. The longterm ones are that Tyrion will never meet Dany. He definitely never rides a dragon. And he never plays a role in capturing Casterly Rock (he's totally doing that), or in convincing people that the fight against the Others is real.

On the plus side, there would be no more discussion of his paternity. :)

Tyrion would have died. Sansa would have escaped to the Vale with Littlefinger where she would be free and clear to marry again.

Joffrey and Margaery would have woken the next morning safe and sound to begin their reign as King and Queen of Westeros. Cersei would have been shipped off to her next husband in a fortnight.

And Littlefinger and Lady O would have fulfilled their respective goals of producing a Tyrell heir to the Iron Throne sooner rather than later and ensuring more chaos in the realm with the idiot Joffrey making decisions and butting heads with Tywin rather than the more thoughtful and pliant Tommen.

At some point, of course, the Tyrells would kill Joffrey, but this would be after an heir or two has been born and their hold on the Iron Throne is secure. And it can also be done quietly, in private and staged to look like an accident, rather than at a public event where literally hundreds of people can see the killer do the deed.

That's a couple of different questions there.

If Joffrey was poisoned but survived then the realm would just burn. He was nuts before but this would be his Aerys II being held at Duskendale moment. He'd see enemies at every turn and it'd only be a matter of time before someone did actually kill him, whether through assassination or another rebellion. I mean, the Tyrells off'd him based largely on his reputation and Sansa's testimony - There's no way they're letting Margaery suffer through the sort of abuse that Rhaella went through. Not with Loras on the Kingsguard.

Tyrion dying instead is a different matter. Granted, he has very little allies but he's still a Lannister and killed at a Lannister wedding. SOMEONE would have to take the blame and, while everybody would suspect Joffrey, nobody would directly accuse him so Oberyn might well take the blame. After all, as he said himself, it was only by chance that Tyrion took the blame for Joffrey's actual assassination.

Not that Tyrion was the target of course. It was an interesting theory but it was based mostly on speculation, bordering on fan fiction with little evidence and motive to back it up. GRRM has confirmed that Joffrey was the target and the murderers were hoping it would look like he'd simply choked on the pie.
