Watch, Watched, Watching: Those Bloodthirsty Gods!

I need to share this with someone.  I just finished watching a movie where a time traveler goes back in time and fucks himself and then she gives birth to herself and then he takes her to an orphanage so that one day she can meet up with him and fuck himself and give birth to herself.  In the background there was a song playing that said "I'm my own grandpa". I can't stop laughing, but it wasn't a comedy.

... I was thinking about this movie recently. Someone on this forum described it as 'Ewwwwww' and I wholeheartedly concur. I still like this movie and the last dialogue scene.

We went to see Justice league on Friday morning... I thought it was "meh".... The writing was hackneyed, and the attempts at humor fell flat... there were so many plot holes, that if this movie was in any other genre, it would be universally panned... But still... superheroes... fights... explosions... so despite its enormous faults,  I enjoyed it for the most part

Binged Punisher over the weekend... Loved it... Now we've started Godless....

The shows in our current rotation are Outlander, Walking Dead, Berlin Station, The Gifted, Damnation, The Long Road Home, Mr. Robot, The Shannara Chronicles, Riverdale,  the Runaways, & The Orville....

Can't top that one, obviously.

Whilst at home sick I saw 1922 and I don't know if it's because I watched it in bed on a Kindle Fire but I was a bit 'pffffftttt' about the whole thing. The initial premise seemed strong and I thought they might really go somewhere with it but it just seemed a bit...limp. Plus all I could hear was Tom Hardigans's voice from that film I always forget the name of...Lawless, that's it. Thomas Jane sounded almost exactly the same and it was kind of distracting. Anyway, I'd been falsely informed that 1922 was good but it wasn't really. Did I miss something? Should I watch it again?

I felt similarly underwhelmed by it. Jane was good, but it was pretty slow, and longer than it needed to be.

I didn't think it was a bad film overall, but I thought the final scenario did feel a bit ridiculous.

Got to see Wind River the other night. Great film, much like others have posted. Renner was badass. Olsen's character was probably one of the most incompetent FBI agents I've ever seen on-screen next to Johnny Utah. She came off unsure, which seemed odd to me. She grew stronger as the film went on, especially towards the end, but I couldn't help but to be surprised with her ineptitude at the start of the film.

Why?

Spoiler

Her job was to assess whether it was a murder then have them send a team. She wasn’t supposed to solve the crime. She was sent directly from a conference in Vegas to the middle of Wyoming and it’s clear she was inexperienced. I thought that considering her lack of understanding of the land, Indian reservation, politics, history and crime solving, she did fairly well.

Went and saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, tonight. It’s excellent. Tough call between it and Wind River as my favorite film of the year. Just a perfect balance of dark humor and drama. You would be hard pressed to find a recent film with a cast as good as this one, Frances McDormand, Woody Harreleson, Sam Rockwell, John Hawkes, Clarke Peters, Peter Dinklage, Kerry Condon, Lucas Hedges... It’s pretty much impossible to upstage Frances McDormand (who’s a national treasure) but Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson were both great as well. Especially Rockwell. I highly recommend it.

I'm a little surprised to see Predestination mentioned as a fave in the science fiction film thread.  I probably didn't pay as much attention to it as I could have.  I think hearing "I'm my own grandpa" playing in the background just ruined it for me.

I had seen quite a bit of praise for it before I watched it, I found it a bit disappointing compared to those expectations, in terms of time travel plotlines it feels a bit silly and lightweight compared to something like Primer.

Damn, that's disappointing about Mudbound. I'll still watch it, but my expectations are a bit tempered now. I have to agree with your concerning Netflix movies. I haven't really been blown away by any and those I liked were not fantastic.

I have two episodes left of the final season of Longmire and I'm happy to be back with these characters in Absaroka County, but the show is flying through stories trying to touch base with a number of different arcs to wrap up any loose ends. Some of these arcs are also a bit minor, so a waste of screen time imo. Shame this is the final season.

Slowly working through The Punisher. I think I'm finally through the early build up episodes. At least I hope I am.

Finished Longmire. I felt it was one of the weaker seasons . . .

due to reasons I mention above in addition to the final two episodes. I always disliked the idea of Walt and Vic together. Those last two episodes were just awkward. Possibly the most awkward love scene I've watched in a  while. Walt and Vic having to each drink more vodka to do the deed was just hilarious. In addition, Vic's entire storyline form the previous season was just rushed through and wrapped up to get her and Walt together in the end. There was a bit of depression and grief after she lost the baby, when the showrunners had nothing else for her to do. And don't get me started on her losing the baby. You had to be willfully blind to not see that coming. The Walt/Vic arc was my biggest complaint. I thought it never should have happened, but if it did, it should've been handled much better. I wonder where Travis disappeared to? Back to his mom's?

I  liked the resolution of some the other character arcs. Henry's being the best. I was happy for him. He always seemed the most altruistic character in the series and it was fitting for him to take over the casino and the welfare of his people. His arc from last season and kidnapping  wrapped up too quickly, but I'm a bit understanding with the rushing of storylines since it was the last season. I didn't like the rush of storylines, but understand the showrunners' desire for closure. I simply wanted more out each character's arc. This season could've used a few more episodes.

Ferg's arc this season was pretty good. One of the better arcs of the season. Not much to complain about there except for his non-reaction to taking a life.

Cady's resolution was just . . . wtf? She's running for sheriff? Umm, no. I loved her as the good-intentioned, naive legal-aid attorney for the Cheyenne Reservation, but sheriff? And Walt though she would be a great sheriff? Because she knows the law?I'm still shaking my head in disbelief about that one. Walt probably knows she'll probably be disbarred for her actions this season. However, her and Zach worked for me. They actually had on-screen chemistry. I was happy the showrunners brought him back. He's a great addition to the Absaroka County Sheriff's Department.

Poor Jacob Night Horse. What happened to this character? He went from being  a great antagonist to an absolute doormat of a character. I realize Malachi was the big bad in the series, but Jacob was simply butchered as a character this season.

I also hated having the Irish mob back.

Well. I saw Okja, which also is a Netflix film, and that was great. So first Netflix movie which I actually think has been solid. Maybe that has more to do with the director, Bong Joon Ho, which is one of the best directors working today. So at least there one that I could recommend now. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but an enjoyable movie with some nice characters and a nice theme.

I still think it worth giving Mudbound a shot, it would be interested hearing other opinions about it.

I'm still enjoying Punisher. Seems like the critics are divided, but fans seem more positive to it. Agree that the beginning was a little slow. But it's just refreshing to have a main character who don't give a damn about killing. He's just out on a revenge train that no one can stop. So at least it offers something different then most of the suuperhero stuff we get nowadays.

Longmire seem interesting, I've seen an episode on tv I think. Western setting and Katee Sackhoff seem like something that could be interesting.

The Punisher has unfortunately been a slog for me so far. I'm only through episode 6, so will reserve judgment until I've finished it, but so far the writers have actually managed to make The Punisher boring.

I loved the first three seasons of Longmire, but they progressively lost steam after that. After the central arc of the main character was resolved, the writers didn't seem to know where to take the show. I still enjoyed it but the final seasons were a little directionless. The final season just seemed to be rushing to close all possible loose ends in the series. In addition the resolution of a few characters arcs was a bit disappointing and incongruent.

I watched all of season 1 of There's...Johnny! on Hulu. The series that follows a naive Nebraska kid as he gets a job working at The Tonight Show in 1972, just months after the show moved to Burbank from New York. I'm a sucker for period pieces especially set in a decade of the 20th Century. Really loved this series and the actors in it, Jane Levy, Tony Danza, and the clutch of Carson's comedy writers. Also love the interspersing of actual "Tonight Show" footage into the episodes and building some of the plot and character interactions among it. This show gets 4.5/5 stars from me.

I also finished season 1 of Future Man, also on Hulu. I loved the Rick and Morty type stuff but:

Spoiler

it felt like they were making the heroes a positive allegory for anti-vaxxers

which really turned me off.

Saw Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express and it was okay. I never read the book or saw the original film, so the ending turned out to be a pretty good twist for me. I'm not sure if this is a remake of the original film, but Branagh's version had his quirky 1930-40's film vibe to it. No one ever twirled their mustache but if they had it would've been done unironically. Know what I'm saying?

Since I abandoned Sons of Anarchy, I've hit a pretty rich vein of TV viewing:

-The Americans S1-3 has been very good and I'm looking forward to S4
Stranger Things 2 was good and not too much of a horror flick
Ozark was pretty good (reviews were mixed on this) albeit pretty derivative and quite slow paced, but overall well done.

Godless is up next for some long flights on Wednesday-Friday this week, and The Americans S4.  I do most of my TV watching on an iPad during flights.  I'm getting tempted to do a Breaking Bad rewatch sometime in the new year -- I think it's three years now since I binged the entire show in just 2-3 months.

My wife is watching Charmed.  We are just light years apart in our TV tastes.  That said, I've been saving GoT S7, Westworld, Outlander (S3?) and Black Sails (S4?) for a TV binge over the Christmas break.  I think we'll both like the first two, while the latter two have one like and one tolerate from each of us, so that's pretty good common ground for some shared TV viewing.

Movie-wise, we went to see Murder On The Orient Express with friends, which is our first movie theater experience since a couple of kid movies for our son in the summer (Despicable Me 3 was terrible).  I thought it was pretty well done even though I knew the ending already.  And I persuaded my wife that we shouldn't all go to see Justice League over the Thanksgiving weekend, which I'm counting as a win.  We already have tickets bought for The Last Jedi on 12/15.

Your last sentence or two sums up my thoughts on her. Thought she had a lack of tack and unpreparedness. I don't expect her to be well versed in the politics and culture of the land but she just flew in erratically and looked unprofessional. The conversation with the family could've gone a lot better. She's lucky she had Renner's character to keep saving her ass. I agree that she grew as the film went on, but the beginning was comical for her character.

Thought episode 9 of Curb was right up there with 5 and 6. Three best eps of the season for me thus far.

Moving along with the Expanse. Almost done with season 1. Still digging it.

Does anyone know if the Americans is available to stream on Amazon?
