Jack Ryan - Amazon Prime Series

Is this based on any particular Clancy book, or is it an original story?

I would assume that it is loosely based around the Jack Ryan mythos.

I have not read up on the series, but in the trailer above he is clearly working for the CIA whilst talking to a young Cathy Ryan-to-be at a mixer of some sort.  In a strict timeline of books, the earliest set Jack Ryan centric novel is Red Rabbit where he is already married and working for the CIA as an analyst.  (Young Jack Ryan actually makes an appearance in the John Clark origin story Without Remorse where he is home from college and talks with his dad who just happens to be the detective investigating the "Invisible Man" drug ring murders.)

Therefore, I'd say this is a bit of an "origin" story for Jack Ryan.  Will be interesting to see if he is a former Marine with a fear of flying from a helicopter crash and a former career as a bored genius stock broker.

ETA:  Its amazing how much you can remember from books you read as a teenager.  I can also tell you the name of Flint Fireforge's father.  :D 20+ years later and I'm lucky to even remember which book I read a couple months ago.

I'm interested but why tell me so early?  "Sometime in 2018" is maddening.  I need to just forget about this until it actually arrives.

I think Hulu has stepped up their game... and now its Amazon's turn...

Have I missed some good stuff on Hulu?  We cancelled our subscription a couple of weeks ago because there was never anything worth watching.  They seem to have just the lowest quality fluff TV shows.  Amazon and Netflix seem to have the higher quality shows.

The Handmaid's Tale just won the Emmy for best drama, which is more than Amazon or Netlfix can boast. That being said, it's not my type of show, and it's not enough to get me to sign up for yet another streaming service.

I really enjoyed 11/22/63 from Hulu (but I watched it on discs that I received from Netfli, because I too do not need another streaming service).

Sneaky Pete is  another show you need to watch with Prime @Rhom

I was familiar with Man in the High Castle, but Sneaky Pete is a new one to me.  Will look into it.

How do most people watch Amazon Prime?  Just on the tablet/desktop or using something like a Firestick?

Tablet and firestick. I love my firestick. Take it with me whenever I visit family as well.

The Path, and the Handmaid's Tale are top-notch shows... Shut Eye, Chance, and Harlots aren't bad...11-22-63 was also terrific...  Granted, they still have work to do to fill-out their line-up... but the tHT won the Emmy for best drama... so if nothing else, that should be the catalyst higher level original programming moving forward

The Handmaid's Tale sounded like misery porn.  Even if very well done, it didn't sound appealing to watch.  I would read the book (and have read several already by Atwood) but I doubt I'll sit and watch for 20+ hours.  I don't watch Lifetime movies either.

I'll wait and see if they get better.  We had a subscription for a couple of years and watched almost nothing on it.  I think we found a couple of lightweight comedies to try, which we had missed when they aired.  But nothing that was worth sticking beyond a couple of episodes.
