North readiness war of five kings

What could the north do to prepare for war after the attempt to assassinate brand or when mountain raided riverlands or or when catelyn kinnap tyrion instead of getting ready only after ned is arrested to defconn 3 or 2?

All they would need to do is defend. If Ned returns North with his family as soon as stuff starts to go wrong then the North is extremely strong. Robb had to go South because his sisters were hostages. If that's not the case the North could probably beat all the other kingdoms combined if they don't have to leave their land. Their only weakness is their navy and two very long coastlines. But inhospitable conditions plus a guerilla style warfare would probably be enough.

Robb also being "King" of the Riverlands as well as the North really destroyed any chance for this. Even if his sisters weren't an issue.

Absolutely. The smart thing to do would be to tell them not to get involved or at least tell them to not commit too many of their forces to attacking the North. Then when the rest of the kingdoms have spent their power have them turn their cloaks and use the riverlands to mount a counter offensive. It should also be mentioned that they obviously have Theon as a hostage as well which would keep the Iron islands out of it and keeping him as a hostage could secure them the islands help in a counter attack. The most important thing though is to stand alone and defend. Probably for the first few years until the other kingdoms are weakened. Apart from the Starks being captured the North was in a ridiculously strong position.

War against who?

Somebody unknown wanted Bran dead; for an unknown reason.  Your first response is to prepare all out war???

Cat takes Tyrion, a stupid move, but again why would you call your banners.  The North is safe, Cat is safe, Ned is Hand.  It's nothing to the rest of the north so unless Ned or Cat gives the order nobody is going to move.

The mountain is raiding the Riverlands no big deal, the Riverlands can deal with him no need for the north to get involved.  The two armies massing on the border on the other hand is an issue, but again no threat to the north and only a concern to Cat and by extension her Stark family.

What they probably should have been doing is sorting out new allegiance to counter Tywin and not assume Robert and his Kings peace would resolve the issue, but that would be going behinde the kings back and a threat to his rule.
