Yanks had an interesting lineup today with Gardner not playing.  Didi led off, and Bird hit 3rd between Judge and Stanton.  Boone said today that ideally he'd prefer a lefty to separate Judge and Stanton, so it would appear Bird has an opportunity there.

I'm liking that. They're both obviously susceptible to righties specialists with good offspeed pitches, so splitting them up would make sense in that regard.

Fantasy nerd stuff: So I mentioned this last year but I have to choose between Sanchez and Judge to keep in one of my leagues. I'm leaning hard towards Sanchez since he should be far and away the best catcher in the league. No reason to change, right?

I'd go with Sanchez, yeah.

Lots of free agents coming off the board on small one year contracts. Twins get Lance Lynn for 1yr/$12 million, A's get Lucroy for 1yr/$6.5 million, Rockies resign CarGo for 1yr/$8 million, and Royals resign Moustakas for 1yr/$6.5 million. It's a bad year to be a free agent.

And now it looks like Arrieta to the Phils, although not on a one-year deal:

ETA:  I think this shows that teams are still willing to pay top dollar for the big name free agents (albeit at shorter deals than recently).  Where the market really has shifted is with the mid-level guys - I think more and more teams are willing to bet on their own controllable guys to produce at similar levels rather than spend big on a guy that's likely only to give you 2-3 WAR, tops.

I actually think Arrieta got fucked harder than anyone else. Hosmer, Martinez, and Darvish all got pretty decent deals, and all the guys I named in my last post will get another shot at a payday next year, but Arrieta will be 35 by the time this contract is up. This was his last shot at a big payday, and instead of the $150MM+ he was surely hoping for, he had to settle for $75MM.

Yes, in relation to those three, Arrieta got fucked really, really hard.  I don't think it's a coincidence that all three of those, though, are really very bad contracts.

Did he though?  25 a year for 3 years is essentially what he wanted, other than it wasn't 25 a year for 6 years.  Yeah he'llbe 35 at the end of it, and isn' going to see 75 million for another 3 at that point, but if he's still gping, he may see three more years at 12 to 15 per.  That would put him in closer alignment with Darvish overall.

The Darvish contract isn' actually that bad...cant say on the other two...

Nah, it was Moustakas that got royaly (heh heh) screwed. The qualifying offer that was originally extended to him was higher than what he ended up getting.

In my book, paying $21 million a year for a pitcher's age 31-36 seasons, when he has 2100 innings on his arm and Tommy John in his injury history, is pretty bad.

In related news, the Yanks signed Neil Walker to a $4.5 million (counting PA incentives) today.  He made $17 million last year.  Looks like all the kids will start the year in Scranton - although maybe now they release Lind, use Walker as Bird insurance, and keep Wade as a super-sub type.

The AAV is probably right where Arrieta wanted it, but no way he pulls in anything close to $12-$15mm per after this contract is up. He's already regressing. Darvish might have gotten a lower AAV on his contract, but he'll still have a lot more money in his pockets than Arrieta 6 years from now.

I'm betting Moose will land himself a pretty nice multi-year contract next offseason when all the losers of the Harper/Machado sweepstakes turn to plan B.

ETA: Yeah, the Pads are really gonna regret the Hosmer contract, but I think the Cubs got a good enough deal on Darvish, and the Martinez deal could go either way.

To clarify, I don't think Darvish is a bad signing.  The Cubs are competing right now, and you never know when that window is gonna close, so you bite the bullet to acquire elite talent even if it means agreeing to a bad contract (especially if you have the financial resources to take on bad contracts).  But that doesn't change the fact that, in a vacuum, it's a bad contract.  It just means that if he helps the Cubs get a ring in the next few years, then those likely really bad 34-36 years are viewed as worth it.

Don't sleep on Arrieta.  Dude will be pitching and getting paid (just not 25 million and year) until he' close to 40 is my prediction.  Guy is smart and I see him reinventing himself a la Maddux in another year or two...

Yanks released Adam Lind today, so that was quick.  Also, this is from a few days ago, but wanted to mention how scary Clint Frazier's concussion sounds.  Said on Saturday he's mixing up the names of his cats.  My first thought was maybe he has a lot of cats, so it's not that bad.  My second thought is maybe he doesn't have any cats, and it's really bad.

Thirdly, based on playing time, it seems pretty clear that Stanton will be the one to move to left when both him and Judge are in the outfield.  Huh.  Given the fact Judge has more recent experience moving around the outfield in the minors and Stanton has only played right in his 8-year career, I thought Judge would be the one to move around.  Interesting.

So Manfred’s latest “great” idea is to start extra inning games with a runner on second at the minor league level. I’ve been willing to tolerate pitch clocks and limiting mound visits, but this goes too far. If he ever tries to implement this at the major league level it’ll be a very sad day.

I'm willing to tolerate NPB style ties after 12 and 15 depending on league but not this shit.

Give him and inch and he’ll take a mile. Manfred should not be allowed any concessions at this point.
