Doran's Paranoia

We see in Feast that Doran made offers for Arianne's hand, but she rejected these because they were all old and sickly. He says he did this because it would look suspicious if he wasn't seen as trying to find a match for her. We know that Robert Baratheon never visited Dorne and apart from the conversation early in Storm where Tywin mentions marriage options for Cersei and where Tyrion is told he is marrying Sansa, I can only think of one other time that the affairs of Dorne are mentioned and that is when Tyrion arranges the betrothal for Myrcella. Can anyone think of any other time Dorne was mentioned in this manner? Was Doran truly paranoid? Or did he actually have a cause to be worried?

It makes sense whether he had good cause to worry or not. Arianne is his eldest child, and once she is a grown woman, it would be suspicious for him to not even try to betroth her. But he made sure to only offer matches he knew she would reject.

Also, the Red Viper tried to raise Dorne for Viserys after the Sack of King's Landing, and Jon Arryn had to go to Dorne to avert fresh war. But it still makes sense for Doran to assume that the throne would have its eyes and ears on Dorne for anything unusual.

Quote

A Storm of Swords - Tyrion VI

"Is it true he tried to raise Dorne for Viserys?"

"No one speaks of it, but yes. Ravens flew and riders rode, with what secret messages I never knew. Jon Arryn sailed to Sunspear to return Prince Lewyn's bones, sat down with Prince Doran, and ended all the talk of war. But Robert never went to Dorne thereafter, and Prince Oberyn seldom left it."

And once he actually did have plots set in motion against the throne, such as having the Red Viper sign on behalf of Dorne in the agreement to betroth Arianne to Viserys, he had all the more reason to be careful, whether the throne was really onto him or not.

I don't think that Doran was being paranoid at all. Arianne was already in her early twenties, and being the heiress of one of the seven kingdoms, her single status would attract some attention. If the royal court had not been occupied with the investigations on the royal bastards and the conflict between Baratheons and Lannisters, someone could have suspected.

Good excuse Doran also has is he needs to marry her matrilineally which so her kids will be Martells and it is hard to find a husband willing to marry like that.

Doran might be overly cautious here, but far from paranoid.

Edmure Tully, for example, wasn't married or even betrothed despite being well into adulthood, and, of course, people took interest and talked. That in itself had no real life consequences whatsoever, but, on the other hand, old Hoster had nothing to hide there. Unlike Doran.

Doran was an idiot. If he's going to out so much value on Viserys, he should have supported him in some manner or another.

Or maybe he realized like most people that Viserys was Aerys Jr and not a horse worth backing.

Had Arianne married at the age of 16, she would have had several heirs already.

He is in no hurry he has Quentyn, Trystane if Arianne dies heirless. He can marry them and they have children to secure succession.

Then why isn't Arienne married? Doran doesn't know about Faegon.

He doesn't? There is no proof he doesn't knows and no that he knows but his actions make it seem like he does know about him.
