Well, you can extend that concept to political media. The US used to have the Fairness Doctrine after all. And many in the left still decry Reagan killing it.

The "garbage op-ed" gives many examples (not just Christina Hoff Sommers) of strong liberal students explaining how words are actual violence and that letting anyone with differing ideas speak nearby (if not ever) is an act of aggression. Sure, many people will call these fine examples of modern education snowflakes but they fail to recognize why we should quash and de-platform anyone who strays from the narrative. And disagreement is something only heard from Nazis or, in many cases, a snowflake on the wrong side of history. The article would have been good to point out these obvious truths but maybe they were too obvious to need to be said.

Also, I'm not a "he"

1) this has been addressed as nauseum before, there is a clear distinction between activism and censorship

2) again, if you want to discuss the politics of the actual event, probably better served in the politics thread. this is for discussing (u.s., though happy to edit the title to open it up to media in general) media and surrounding meta commentary

What the article doesn't point out is how many times college educators are put in compromising positions.  A while back - before Trump was elected - a faculty member I'm close to was asked by a student group to sign off on, effectively greenlight, their invitation of an "alt-right" speaker because a faculty signature was needed for the bureaucracy to OK the "event."  Just as I do, this faculty member believes strongly in the first amendment, but did not want to be associated with the speaker's views.  She eventually denied the group's request (and no, I had nothing to do with her decision), and was promptly attacked by the student group and throughout the dregs of social media as against free speech and the first amendment.  Last time I checked, the first amendment included freedom of association, which means the freedom to not associate with people that hold abhorrent views.

Anyway, Bari Weiss seems far more invested in trying to highlight the hypocrisy of the left than saying anything productive.  In this way, she's actually very much the intellectual scion of your George Wills for the brave new world of internet outrage.  As it stands, nobody is or can stop the "alt-right's" or anyone else's free speech.  It's demanding that universities and those therein must provide a platform for such speech that is much more Orwellian.  As an example, an excerpt from Weiss' op-ed in question:

Quote

For the lecture itself, a student wearing a jacket emblazoned with the command “Stay Woke” led protesters in shouting “Microaggressions are real” and “No platform for fascists.” Ms. Sommers handled matters as gracefully as possible, but had delivered only half her lecture before Janet Steverson, a law professor and the school’s dean of diversity and inclusion, asked her to cut her remarks short and take questions from the hardy souls who somehow survived the violence of her words.

Oh, dearest me!  She had protesters shouting and had to actually take questions!  Who exactly is being the snowflake here?

Highlighting the hypocrisy of the left is orders of magnitude more productive than most of the things today's media usually does.

I mean, sure, if you are in the tank for Trump and so view actual reporting as the enemy.

Granted, shitting on the media is like facing the Brooklyn Brawler in a dark match, but if one has any belief in the media's watchdog role this would necessarily not be the case.

This one from the Washington Post displays a degree of mental gymnastics even Winston Smith would admire. Everyone should study humanities with professors like this. Great work, content warning though: don't read the comments.

Ah, the coward's way out.  Not to engage, just to move on to the next cite and smear.

That's a good op-ed, yes. She correctly points out that just regurgitating the sides of an issue without context is not debate and mostly serves to gives preference to bad ideas. The news media is terrible at doing that and needs to exercise a little more sense in what they put on air.

  • 3 weeks later...

Here's a news video of Sinclair Broadcasting Group (a conservative media company out to acquire all the local tv news and convert them all into being pro-Trump and fake news/conspiracy theory pushers, and is being enabled by Trump's people at the FCC) having their news anchors read the same transcript word for word all over the country about how other media outlets are a danger to democracy for putting bias into stories and reporting "fake news".

Nothing says choice and democracy quite like ultra powerful monopolies controlling everything.

I posted this over in the politics thread, but it's also very relevant here: Big Brother is getting ready to watch over the shoulder of the news media.

Quote

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security wants to monitor hundreds of thousands of news sources around the world and compile a database of journalists, editors, foreign correspondents, and bloggers to identify top “media influencers.”

It’s seeking a contractor that can help it monitor traditional news sources as well as social media and identify “any and all” coverage related to the agency or a particular event, according to a request for information released April 3.

The data to be collected includes a publication’s “sentiment” as well as geographical spread, top posters, languages, momentum, and circulation. No value for the contract was disclosed.

“Services shall provide media comparison tools, design and rebranding tools, communication tools, and the ability to identify top media influencers,” according to the statement. DHS agencies have “a critical need to incorporate these functions into their programs in order to better reach federal, state, local, tribal, and private partners,” it said.

The DHS wants to track more than 290,000 global news sources, including online, print, broadcast, cable, and radio, as well as trade and industry publications, local, national and international outlets, and social media, according to the documents. It also wants the ability to track media coverage in more than 100 languages including Arabic, Chinese, and Russian, with instant translation of articles into English.

The request comes amid heightened concern about accuracy in media and the potential for foreigners to influence U.S. elections and policy through “fake news.” Nineteen lawmakers including Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.), Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month, asking whether Qatar-based Al Jazeera should register as a foreign agent because it “often directly undermines” U.S. interests with favorable coverage of Hamas, Hezbollah and al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria.

The DHS request says the selected vendor will set up an online “media influence database” giving users the ability to browse based on location, beat, and type of influence. For each influencer found, “present contact details and any other information that could be relevant, including publications this influencer writes for, and an overview of the previous coverage published by the media influencer.”
