If Joffrey Killed Himself, How Would The Story Change?

Recommended Posts

Let's say that sometime before his wedding, Joffrey comes to the realization that he is a bastard born of incest.

In a fit of madness he hangs himself, the night before his wedding, and writes a note saying goodbye.

How does the story change? No Tyrion trial, Tywin still alive, Sansa never escapes, Oberyn lives?

They find the king dead with a note claiming he has killed himself.

Could it be suicide or could it be foul play.

"I thought the crossbow fitting. You shared so much with Lord Tywin, why not that? Your niece will think the Tyrells had you murdered, mayhaps with the connivance of the Imp. The Tyrells will suspect her. Someone somewhere will find a way to blame the Dornishmen. Doubt, division, and mistrust will eat the very ground beneath your boy king, whilst Aegon raises his banner above Storm's End and the lords of the realm gather round him." Epilogue Dance

Just because he killed himself does not mean people won't make their own minds up and no doubt someone somewhere will find a way to blame the Dornishmen, but Cersei will blame Tyrion, a bit of torture and no doubt some of his wildmen would confess to the crime.  Shae would confess again.

Besides if he confessed to be a product of incest there is even more reason to claim the letter as a fake and find a scape goat.

Or do you suggest the Lannisters and Tyrells accept the truth and bow to Stannis the true heir LOL

Don't know if they'd bend the knee. Stannis sees the Lannisters as usurpers and has a lot of hard feelings against the Tyrells over the Siege of Storm's End. Plus, they change sides at the first opportunity.

It would depend on who found him. Most people would have just burned the note as soon as they found it. If word of it ever got out, then they'd spin it around on Stannis by saying that his lies drove his own nephew to madness and suicide, making him indirectly a kinslaying... or something.

I really don't see the Lannisters rolling over for Stannis because the family member pretty much all of them despise (apart from Cersei) killed himself. The Tyrells won't want to see the Lannisters go down straight away either as they had invested a lot of time into their alliance and have burned the bridge of any hope of an alliance with Stannis. If he manages to become King, their position in the Reach is compromised as are all their extra gains from the Florents. Stannis simply isn't the sort of bloke who would let sleeping dogs lie.

So, they would destroy the note and be glad Joffrey killed himself nice and cleanly.

Heck, I think Tywin would have been thrilled and immediately set his plans in motion to get Tommen away from Cersei by marrying her off. He probably would have forced Jaime out of the Kingsguard to go back to Castely Rock, as well, while keeping Tyrion/Sansa under a close eye so he can hopefully have them make a Lannister-Stark baby to install in Winterfell one day.
