I'm not usually one for like animated movies, I mean I sometimes just don't like the gore, but this is the best thing I've watched since that time Lenard Cohen (god rest his soul) got fucked up on Tequila and Henrietta's Sweet and Sour before puking into the deep fryer at a Wendy's. I've never seen a bunch of Germans so ticked off. And listen, say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism but at least it's an ethos. I don't think I'll ever look at hippies the same. But anyways, this Batman movie. Lemme tell ya, it's great. Yo, @Manhole Eunuchsbane if you're still up when I post this switch it over to HBO. This shit is DOPE! I didn't realize that I wanted to see Babs Gordon talk about her weird relationship with her 'yoga instructor' while at work until about an hour ago. Ditto for Batman getting kinda clowned by some hookers he's questioning. I mean, of course Batman would bring Batwoman a coffee when she's taking her brood of shame. polishgenius Posted November 19, 2017 Share Posted November 19, 2017 My understanding is that they took the big criticism of the otherwise classic original comic, that the treatment of Babs Gordon was rather sexist, heard it, and doubled down on it, adding in an outrageously problematic relationship with Batman while not fixing much of why people thought her treatment was an issue in the first place. Yeah... I'm left pretty confused. At first I thought it was a Babs movie, where it was like a slice-of-life thing and she was just shaking down mobsters. But then the fucking incredibad Joker Backstory thing started and the only time we saw her again was when she got crippled and raped. And don't get me started on the Joker stuff. Jesus. Yeah the batgirl stuff flabbergasted me. It seems to be an attempt to address th sexism but instead was inadvertently more sexist. So most of the fucked up bits if that are fine by me. The criticism was that she'd basically been fridged for Comissioner Gordon's 'benefit' and of course that all the nakedness and implied rape was unnecessary even in the context of that. Even Alan Moore in later years admitted he'd got that wrong. So I guess the writers saw that criticism and decided the only change needed was more Babs because that'd completely undo the fridging aspect, and, you know, who cares if the 'more Babs' stuff is just about how much she wants to sleep with Batman, or whatever it was (I haven't actually seen the film, for the record). But you've read the right reviews, because that is exactly the kind of stupid that infuriated me the most. Aside from the nonsensical Barbara storyline (that mostly revolved around her going easy on a greasy mobster 'cause he's flirting with her or something in which Batman is portrayed as always right) I found that it had some severe pacing issues in the end. The whole clown park thing was fine, but I imagined Joker's monologue and penultimate joke, even though I've never read the comic, completely different. The whole premise of the joke is that the Joker regards Batman as just as obsessed and crazy as himself and that it is therefore ironic when Bats tries to reach out to him just like the guy in the joke. Bats chuckling at that joke is kind of the ultimate victory for the Joker, because it is Bats admitting that the Joker is right, from a certain point of view. But that's it! It is funny because it is a clever analogy, it is nothing Bats would laugh manically with the Joker about like they portrayed it. I just found that ending weird and OOC, just like the entire Barbara segment. Since the initial thread title was about 'good' animated Batman movies, I thought you were trying to get some recommendations. I here would be mine: Mask of the Phantasm I start right out with what many people regard as the best Batman has to offer. Mask of the Phantasm is the first movie set in the Timm-verse of the DCAU and deals with two time-shifted storylines. In current Gotham a new masked vigilante appears who starts to murder mobsters left and right with a style not unlike Batman, causing the police to assume that Batman snapped and causing them to turn against him while he investigates the true killer. Parallel to that is shown how Bruce returned from his ninja training travels and does his first footsteps as unnamed vigilante, at least until he falls for Andrea Beaumont, a woman he met by chance while visiting the grave of his parents. A romance that might be a tad rushed, but in hindsight makes a lot of sense, given how similar the two are in character. In fact, this is what makes the movie so great: This Batman is not the invincible Mary Sue of nowadays fanboys, but incredibly vulnerable. The whole flashback storyline deals with how he is torn apart by guilt for being happy. Because he is honestly playing with the thought of abandoning Batman to live as Bruce Wayne, something he regards as betrayal against his parents. And even in the current storyline, when the Gotham police proves surprisingly effective and absolutely brutal in hunting down Batman, the desperation really is palpable. It also has an absolutely amazing score! Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker The other DCAU movie I'd recommend to everyone. Not just because I am a sucker for Terry McGinnis and the Batman of the future. But also because it has the ultimate death scene of the Joker. It is terrifying. And it is just pure cinematic art in how it is shot. And then come the parallels with the current storyline, in which a young Joker mysteriously appears to haunt Gotham and fight the new Batman and scare the shit out of old Bruce. I absolutely adore the final battle in which Terry manages to do the polar opposite approach Bruce did: Laugh about the Joker. Unnerve him by mocking and shit-talking him! Terry just completely turns the table against the Joker this way and it is marvellous. You can also watch this movie on Youtube, cause DC itself uploaded it there officially! Say what you want about Alan Moore, this period of his work outshone just about anything else that was being written at the time. His DC work was seminal. I actually thought that's what the movie was! It's just that the entire narrative takes a weird 180 to Bats and Jokes like 45 minutes into the movie and then kinda retroactively makes Babs just this ditzy idiot. I thought the friction with the obstinate Batman was going to lead somewhere (other than a hate fuck), and even the shooting/rape almost looked like it could be a moment of character development. Seems to me the film did a really good job of capturing his style. Now I waver back and forth. I think Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman doesn't get enough love. Not as good as the above two but very enjoyable. The third of the Timm-verse Batman movies. Seems each era of the Batman animated series had its own movie. Phantasm was for the original era, Subzero was the era when Fox changed the title to "The Adventures of Batman and Robin", and Mystery of the Batwoman was for the fourth season when KidsWB brought it back as "The New Batman/Superman Adventures" when they changes the character designs. For a Timm-verse Batman, it's a pretty fun and light hearted film. Some really good voice acting. One of my favorite scenes of all Batman animated movies is the "Betcha Never" scene at the Iceberg Lounge. Bruce even has an "I've made a terrible mistake" moment when talking with Barbara.
