lady narcissa
Oh my gosh I am so excited for Virgil Williams on his nomination! (I went to grade school and high school with him - I am totally biased on this!) Random movie trivia - he was one of the orphans in The Blues Brothers back when he was a little boy. I love when people follow their dreams like this and succeed.

But that will change in a month or so, since I'm sure the majority of these films will be coming to the FEST festival, as they usually do. Loveless is great, but I'm willing to bet it has no chance of winning, because the Academy tends to be stupid and political about these things, so a Russian film winning in 2018 is probably not in the cards. I think The Post, Molly's Game and Darkest Hour are on repertoire of Cineplexx. So, you can watch them there. But, yes, I suppose FEST is the best opportunity to watch them

FEST will obviously only show those that aren't already in cinema. Last year Get Out was in cinemas, but for something like 3 weeks. It was in and out before I even found the time to see it. Myrddin
Boss Baby vs Lego Batman Boss Baby = 51% Rotten Tomato / 52% Audience score Lego Batman = 91% Rotten Tomato / 80% Audience score Clearly Boss Baby is worthy of the "Oscar Nominated Film" label.... I haven't seen either, but RT scores aren't exactly the most reliable parameter of quality, as some people consider them. The percentages are calculated by deciding that certain reviews are positive and others are negative, with nothing in between. This does not tell you whether the majority of those "positive" reviews were glowing, "best movie of the year!!!" type, or just in the vein "eh, it was pretty good, I guess". As a result, a lot of controversial movies get mixed scores, while many inoffensive movies that do what they set out to do get very high scores. That said, there's a bunch of terrible pr mediocre movies that have gotten Oscar nominations and even wins (and I mean for things like Best Picture or direction, not score or special effects or song). But many of them also have very high RT percentages.

Since Disney/Marvel will never do an R-rated X-men movie. If I was in Fox's shoes I would hate to push for nominations for both Jackman and Stewart only to have one of them actually be nominated. Getting the screenplay nomination is kind of a safer route, and everyone knows this nomination is secretly for Jackman and Stewart. Jackman and Stewart should have written 3 lines of dialogue each and been given a writing credit. (in [book] Arya Stark's voice) That's stupid. If you want to nominate performances, then just nominated performances. If you want to nominate the script, then nominate the script. Actors don't write their own lines, and the screenwriter doesn't act (unless they are one and the same person... but even then, awards committees should freaking be able to see the differences between screenwriting and acting performance, especially since it's their goddamn job to do that). Isis
Salma Hayek's fiesty announcement of the nominations for Best Actor was great. Then when they did a split-screen showing all the nominees while she announced the winner, the look on Gary Oldman's face when she said 'And the winner is Frances McDormand' was superb. He looked kind of sad and confused. It was brilliant. The more I think about it, the funnier it is. It was a kinda like that bit in Dusk Til Dawn where she tells George Clooney's character that she's going to keep him as a pet and call him Spot. Good for her.
