Awards Season 2018 (Movie Edition): Welcome to the hell, boys (Update: BAFTA Winners)

It wasn't a good year for LaLa Land. The last year's awards circuit ended in Oscar fiasco, the summer brought the entire line of uninspiring hits and the mastermind of Awards game has been dethroned. But, all the problems aside, the movies are what counts and the award-giving bodies will have a task of giving golden statues to those they feel deserved it. For this thread, we shall focus on 5 awards that are going to given in the next 3 months:

  1. Critics Choice Awards (Nominations)
  2. Golden Globes (Nominations)
  3. Screen Actors Guild Awards (Nominations)
  4. BAFTA (Nominations)
  5. Oscars

Per usual, I will be updating the thread (and opening post) with the news of nominations and winners. The discussion about movies on the lists (and those out of them) are more than welcome.

Enjoy the ride... :D

P.S. The TV thread is also coming soon.

I think we should all be a little amazed at All The Money In The World, Christopher Plummer in particular. The re-shooting only ended what, 3 weeks ago? THFP had time to view and nominate it? And Plummer was that amazing on such short notice? That's kinda crazy. One wonders how much of the Scott/Plummer nominations were a reward or affirmation of Scott's decision.

Couldn’t disagree more. Easily his best performance to date.

I don't know about that. I don't think the guy has a ton of range or is particularly charismatic, but he was certainly more interesting in Hurt Locker, I quite liked him in the Town and the Assassination of Jesse James.

Honestly I thought Wind River was an absolute nothing of a movie, so forgettable that I literally forgot that I'd seen it. I hope it wins nothing because otherwise in years to come everyone look back at the awards and be like 'wuh?!'.

Its pretty clear why they have nominated it then.

I tend to agree with Eggegg. Renner was good and exactly what the role called for but not much more. Testament to the casting and writing more than anything. The fact it was his best performance to date doesn't mean much.

Glad to see the Angelina Jolie Directed, "First They Killed My Father" (Kampuchea), get nominated for Best Foreign Language Motion Picture. Its very good, maybe not as good as "The Killing Fields" which won an Oscar with a very similar subject matter. But a very important story of recent history that we should never forget (genocide).

DDL, Hanks and Streep being out doesn't mean they don't have a chance, it's just that voters didn't see it.

Dench seems the obvious choice to miss among actresses and Denzel among the actors.

I have to say that it is a bit strange. All three are so widely respected among the peers that you would take those 3 nominations for granted. That said, it can be that they didn't get the chance to see those or it can be something else. I am not sure at what point Streep-fatigue will kick in, but I would bet any year now. DDL is always a strong contender and the news of retirement may be just what he needs to tie him with Hepburn at Oscars.

All in all, I still have no idea where the Best Actress race is heading.
