Winning 2nd Oscar is not always about performance, but the narrative around it (unless you are considered undoubted winner like Blanchett in 2013, and even that one had that Paltrow factor Academy wanted to level). Hawkins is also a strong contender. Streep should never be underestimated (especially if she campaigns like for The Iron Lady). Academy also loves young actresses and they have a good track record when it comes to awards, so we may even see Lawrence v Riva again with Ronan or Robbie against Hawkins and Dormand. That all said, given that SAG overlaps with Academy more than GG or CCA, it can be arguably claimed that Dormand is a frontrunner. It will be clearer when the awards start pouring. I must have read or edited wrongly... Thanks. As for winners, the things will get a bit clearer from now on. Three Billboards and The Shape of Water are clear frontrunners for Oscars and Oldman and Dormand solidified their positions. Unless CCA and SAG don't go in all directions (as some are predicting), we can expect a landslide until the Oscar night. Even without Harvey, the game hasn't changed. Mexal Posted January 23, 2018 Share Posted January 23, 2018 I always wonder how a film can get a Best Picture, Best Actress, two Best Supporting Actor noms, which consists of basically the main cast and not get a Best Director nomination. Think Martin McDonagh deserved one. ETA: Looking at the best director noms, the only one I haven't seen is Phantom Thread and while I recognize PTA is a pretty good director, I find his movies overly long and completely inaccessible (well, his recent ones, loved There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights). I could be judging without having seen it but I just find it hard to believe that Martin McDonagh did such a good job as a director to make a great movie that got all these nominations/wins, only to not be as good as the others listed. I think adapted screenplay is an overall nod to a grand finale for Jackman and Stewart as they exit the X-men and possibly of the best X-men movies for the Fox Era, and most likely to be the best X-men movie even once Marvel/Disney start putting out X-Men movies. Since Disney/Marvel will never do an R-rated X-men movie. If I was in Fox's shoes I would hate to push for nominations for both Jackman and Stewart only to have one of them actually be nominated. Getting the screenplay nomination is kind of a safer route, and everyone knows this nomination is secretly for Jackman and Stewart.
