And my guess is Democratic leadership gave them permission to vote that way, because as long as that number isn't 9 Democrats, it doesn't matter.

Especially seeing how Graham, Lee, Flake, and Paul all voted against it on the Republican side.

Holy Shit man, yeah it's #TrumpShutdown, but the buses running on time?   That's just crazy talk!

So Mr. Art of the Deal invited Schumer over just to blame him when his party couldn't unfuck its own caucus, right? And that's why a Russian bot army is trying to push the Schumer shutdown hashtag?

It sounds more like Trump did cut a deal with Schumer and that Kelly than overruled him. Because in many ways Trump personally is an almost powerless President.

Well, at least Schumer got some cheeseburgers out of the deal.

The government is shutting down because Donald Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing

And the basic problem with a DREAMers-for-wall swap is that the wall is a dumb idea that wouldn’t actually accomplish anything to reduce immigration to the United States. And if legislative protections for DREAMers ended up creating a path to citizenship, it might actually end up increasing immigration, since the new citizens could sponsor visas for relatives.

Consequently, better-informed immigration hawks like White House senior adviser Stephen Miller and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) began working with Chief of Staff John Kelly to avoid the kind of deal that Trump had repeatedly suggested — and even at times explicitly agreed to in general terms.

The problem is that while hawks successfully scuttled a deal — souring Trump on a bipartisan compromise authored by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) — they haven’t managed to put forward any plausible ideas of their own.

This is a good reminder that the one "competent" or "disciplined" person left in the senior West Wing staff is a vicious and dishonest racist.

The strength of the immigration hawks comes not just from figures like Senator Cotton and Miller, but from their megaphone: the right-wing media. Trump’s presidency has created a feedback loop in which the president’s xenophobia and racism—from his claim that Mexican immigrants are rapists to his recent “shithole” remark—have emboldened prominent white nationalists to express their views forthrightly on Fox News. This, in turn, emboldens Trump himself, since he watches Fox News for cues on how to please his right-wing base, thereby making it harder for Trump to compromise on issues like protecting Dreamers.

Trump, Fox News, and the Mainstreaming of White Nationalism
A racist TV interview helps explain why the president is struggling to cut an immigration deal that averts a government shutdown.

I am baffled by the wide-eyed optimism you are exhibiting. Everything is shit and we are all fucked and there is no reason to be optimistic about anything in the political sphere.

Hey, I've dealt with depression my whole life. It's a monster, and there is only one silver bullet. Just remember that no matter how bad things get, there is a way out. Always.

Speaking of that piece of shit whispering in Trump's ear, it's about time I saw someone finally address that he is no moderating force on air.

I was surprised to see the discussion on CNN last about his role in all this, how close his opinions are to Miller's. Now we know.
