How much do county cricket players make, anyway? I guess it varies widely and international stars would make lots, but it still wouldn't compare with the IPL money.

I actually don't know but I think the salary cap's about £2 million so you're certainly not talking IPL money and it probably depends on what formats you play in. Still, Surray are the richest county by a decent margin so I wouldn't be surprised if they do something like setting up their overseas players with somewhere to live in London to supplement their wages.

Steve Smith needs to earn a living? At 28, the guy owns shares in four racehorses, has no child-raising responsibilities and has already made more money than most of us will in a lifetime. Cry me a river!

Oh and I can’t resist mentioning: at least until his ban is over, Smith will have to content himself with being third on the list of all-time test batting averages. Voges has rightly been restored to second spot :p.

Well, it's true that Warner/Smith are already loaded so passing the time for 12 months really isn't a monetary issue. Worst that could happen is they have to sell off an investment property or two. So maybe my sympathy for Smith is misplaced (and it's rather arbitrary sympathy anyway as I hope Warner rots and goes bankrupt and has to stack shelves at the local supermarket for money).

Banning them from all cricket is a tricky thing. I actually don't really know what the mechanism would be. Since the year-long ban is imposed by Cricket Australia, not the ICC, I suppose technically they could play abroad - but apparently there's some form of gentleman's agreement where other competitions have to check with the home cricket board that it's okay (e.g. NZ asking if it was alright for Stokes to play in their domestic comp while charges were still being sorted through). Anyway, if it's like any other cricketing bureaucracies, I'm sure it's some maze.

The IPL threw up too extremely close games last night. One was a win by 4 runs, the other was a win with 2 balls to spare after having required 43 off 17 at the end. Great entertainment, and the IPL is really a big juggernaut now.

It makes you wonder how many T20 domestic leagues are going to thrive and survive. Every national cricket board is going to want one. Clearly the IPL and the Big Bash League in Australia are a commercial success, but I wonder how many more markets can be sustained globally and within the cricketing calendar. The IPL was always going to be a massive draw given the crowds and fanbase, but Cricket Australia was fortunate (or clever) to get in quick as well as I'd say the BBL is probably the second-biggest T20 tournament in terms of star pulling power.

There won't be room for too many more leagues otherwise that cricketing calendar is going to explode. Yet at the same time, it must be making the ICC nervous because a well put-together T20 league is a moneymaker for national cricketing boards. They'll want them, even if it means crowding out the Test calendar and potentially making more and more players have to exclusively choose between a T20 or Test career. A very precarious balance.

In terms of getting some balance, I am of the opinion that international T20 series should probably be allowed to die out so that proper cricket tours can be shorter. With thrown together teams that don't play regularly, international T20 is really an exhibition match that is a one-off tour starter or finisher at best.

An easy decision for Cricket Australia with JL appointed as the new coach of the men’s teams. The selection process for a new ODI captain will be trickier you’d think, though Finch has emerged as an early favourite.

Meanwhile the ECB has decided to turn its back on T20 cricket with the new 100-ball format. Bizarro.

I’m probably an outlier in these parts...but I’m actually pretty excited to see what Ireland can do in their first test. We have had so few new test teams in my lifetime that I’m willing to jump at any expansion of my preferred format!

It’s possible that we will see a one-sided contest, but the home ground advantage and the considerable international experience of the O’Briens, Joyce, Rankin etc should help Ireland. Playing Pakistan could be a good start too - they haven’t exactly been consistent in tests since Misbah’s departure.

The Chaser (I think it was them) did a spoof on Twenty20, called "Six6" where each team just bowled one over. They then had an interview of how they were going to try to reduce it even further, perhaps to One1.

It seems not as far-fetched any more.

The 100-ball thing is ridiculous. It's not different enough from T20 to warrant a new format. I'd take Six6 over that!

Langer as Australian coach will be interesting. Supposedly from the "tough love" school of coaching, we'll see if he can whip them into shape. On the one hand people are saying he's picking a terrible time to come into the team, but on the other hand he's got nothing to lose. The public want him to succeed and if he doesn't, they'll probably blame the players.

So Paine confirmed as ODI captain, but only on a temporary basis. It seems as if the hunt is on for a World Cup skipper (maybe they are keeping the door open for Smith already!?)

Getting excited now for Ireland’s debut! At 39, Joyce will be one of the oldest test debutants in history. It’s kind of a shame that Morgan isn’t there to lead the side, it would’ve been cool to see him follow in Wessels’ footsteps.

If I remember correctly, Morgan's original motivation for leaving Ireland was that he wanted to play Test cricket. It's a bit ironic that he's now become a one-day specialist for England when he could have been Ireland's first Test captain if he'd stayed.

It'll be interesting to see how Ireland do, I think there's a chance they could be competitive although also a chance it will be a one-sided victory for Pakistan.

I'm excited for Ireland too, and for Joyce who has waited a looooonnng time for this.

I was pleased to see that Mark Wood has returned from the IPL early (not that he was getting many games anyway) to focus on trying to get into the Test team.

Apparently Stuart Broad is top of the entire Fantasy Premier League for this game week. Probably got lots of time to work on his team playing cricket in May.

I've got more points than him overall which is the important thing. It's a marathon not a sprint.

It’s raining in Dublin.

If Scotland ever play a Test match then I predict the same thing would happen.

At least the forecast for the other four days looks better.

I know there are some suggestions about organising four-day Tests but I'd suggest that's a terrible idea for places like Dublin where it rains frequently.
