Watch, Watched, Watching: Britannia doesn't rule the waves

If you get the opportunity, I recommend viewing The Godfather Epic, a re-edit in chronological order of the first two films including additional footage not released in the theatrical versions. It was available on HBO and may still be on HBO GO.

I've watched this version many times. Think last time it was on HBO over Christmas or Thanksgiving. I recorded it on VHS like 20 years ago too. It's great, I love the additional Vito scenes.

I watched a pretty good movie yesterday that I'm fairly confident @Isis would enjoy - 2:22.  Spoiler/not spoiler, read at your own risk

It has some

The Fountain like elements.

I've also been watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend because there's so little new stuff on right now and @HelenaExMachina has raved about it so much.  I ignored it when it first came out because the name and premise didn't really entice me to watch.  It is quite a bit different than I had expected it to be; I didn't know that the lead actress was the "Fuck me, Ray Bradbury" woman, and that there would be so much singing.  Really enjoying it, although

I don't understand at all why she is so hung up on Josh, and I really don't see what Josh sees in Valencia.  Does not compute.  The episode about her running out of her prescription drugs does make me think she just had a mental break when she had the panic attack and saw him on the street.  The mental gymnastics she's used to explain why she moved is quite fun.  My favorite episode so far was probably 13 (I've only watched the first 14 so far) - the court room one - mostly because of Trent.  Trent, and her reactions to him were hilarious.  Hopefully he shows up again.

OUATIA is great, and very underrated, imo, but I have Goodfellas ahead of it. Anyone interested it that one needs to make sure to watch the extended directors cut. Thankfully it’s the only version I’ve seen, but I’ve read what the studio did to it for the theatrical release, and they fucked Leone big time.

For whatever reason, it's probably my favorite gangster movie. The slow burn really works for me, and the fact that you get to see their whole lives play out really is unique IMO.

Also 100% agree on only watching the extended version. The four hour run time is worth it. The 2 hour version is linear and it cuts out a ton of important stuff, especially from the childhood section of the film. from what I've read. The studio's decisions basically made Leone leave the film industry. Those close to him said it broke his heart.

I’ll concede on Pulp Fiction. I think it was the best movie of the 90’s, therefore I guess I have to have it ahead of Goodfellas. I just don’t necessarily think of it right away when talking about gangster/mob movies. For whatever reason.

I can agree that it's one of the best if not the best 90's movies. And the reason you don't immediately view as a gangster movie is probably for the same reason most people do: it's not billed as a gangster movie. The Godfather, Goodfellas, etc. are telling you from the very start that this is a movie about Cosa Nostra. Pulp Fiction is telling a broad story that has a lot of gangsters at the heart of it. There are a ton of movies like Pulp Fiction that don't call themselves gangster movies while being heavily about gangsters.

Great, great movie.

In my MBA program, the professor teaching the negotiations class showed a clip from this movie to illustrate a point.  I was stunned that I was the only person in a class of 60+ who had seen the movie.

That's not surprising tbh. I had only loosely heard of it until I watched a Stuckmann video which convinced me that I should check it out.

That's my favorite of the new bond films!  Also, because I love watching them in order and that silent action scene is one of the best ever filmed IMO.

I haven't heard many people say it's their favorite. In fact, a lot of people I know tell they didn't care too much for it. That's why I always tell them to watch it right after Casino Royal, which isn't just my favorite Bond movie of the new batch, but of all time. I never thought I'd like one more than GoldenEye

ETA: Also, seeing them all in a row, Aliens just doesn't do it for me anymore.  It's too much of a standard 80's action film except w/ a female lead.  The guys running around in rubber alien suits, the horrifically 80's action movie dialog, the 'boss battle' at the end...  The 'action film' pieces just don't hold up, while her relationship w/ Newt and her interactions with Paul Reiser (sp?) were absolutely amazing.  Really exemplifies the big dumb monster movie with some good character interactions thrown in IMO.  So I definitely give the new one a bit of leeway in that regard.

That's fair. And as far as 80's action movies go, and sometimes 80's movies in general, I kind view them differently than a lot of other movies. They're unique in a way where movies that could easily have been bad somehow were amazing. Maybe that thought process represents the 80's as a whole.

Loved Groundhog's Day. Seen it several times. Even joked about them making a sequel, part 2, but then having it actually be the original movie again, since that would be perfect!

Haha. That would be great.

@drawkcabi, just saw your posts. I'll respond next time I hop on.

They can successfully make a re-edit of Godfather 1 and 2 but they can't give us The Whole Bloody Affair. What has this world come to?

Started watching Britannia as suggested by this thread and indeed, I must share the sentiment.

There were misgivings before release and they prove to be true. Pretty poor so far.

The readers' comments to the recaps in the Brit media of the latest Britannia episode are hilarious.  My favorite was, "I didn't think anybody was still watching. This is so bad, and not just historically."

Regarding some earlier posting, Duvall plays Tom Hagen in the Godfathers 1 and 2. There is no Matt Hagen in any of the Godfathers 1,2 or 3, nor in Puzo's book(s).:D

I viewed the Hostiles Western movie. Its pretty dark, deals with PTSD in that era. Movie is great in execution but not one for uplifting the spirit. The scenery will not disappoint.

I got Tom Hagen mixed up with Matt Hagen aka Clayface in Batman mythology. :dunce:

So this is awkward. I subscribe to the RLM guys because I enjoy Mike's commentary and Rich is fun too.

A couple weeks back they posted a review for 'Maiz Runner: The Death Cure'

I LOVE when they review shitty franchises, it's the BEST.

A quick bit of history though. See, back when transformers knights of whatever came out last year they did a great bit with all of their separate shows where they released a review of the film that was a 2 hour long sequence of transformey sounds with no visuals.

It was great! They released that same video for like all 5 of their different shows as a review of the film.

So when I saw 'Maise Runner: The Death Cure' my internal monologue quite honestly went

"Huh. I know the milk has a week left on the expiration date, but I've never trusted milk if I'm honest. It comes from cow tits. That's weird. Oh look! A new review! 'Mayse Runner: The Death Cure' Oh, they're just making a joke. That's cool. Didn't that kid like burn his face off or something? I heard he had brain damage. Better hope Ryan Renolds gets bored with the DP gig. Oh who am I kidding? I definitely internally addressed the character as Dead Pool. Hmm, now I'm correcting a monologue told in the present from the future with knowledge of the past. What's that about? Why is it so bright? Go away, Moon! It is no longer time for your shennanighans! I won't stand for it! And Christopher Reeves won't sit for this neither. And I ain't got no beef with him either..."

Anyways, as should be quite apparent by now it seemed so absurd on its face to name a film Maze Runner that I thought it was a fucking joke.

Fast forward to today and I casually looked up showtimes to find that The Death Cure is playing in a theater near me!

With proper English subtitles? Where?

I had to download the English subtitles separately and just used VLC to play it with them.  Various redditors have done a great job of doing the subtitles themselves for at least half the season.

Outside of a handful of lines where the translation is a little iffy, they've been great.

So there's a new HBO hour-long drama starting tonight, Here and Now, created by Allan Ball.  On the one hand I'm not too particularly excited for it but by the same token I'm amazed at how little hype I've seen for it given that it's a new HBO hour Sunday night show.  Curious if anyone else has heard anything good or bad.

Ads and write-up about it have been all over New York media.  The reviewers are fairly ho-hum, saying it's excellent as far as it goes, which is as far as American Beauty and thus hasn't got much to say new or interesting about ye olde 20th century suburban angst.  I.e. Ball seems to have missed we're living in a different world now.  Still it's a satisfying watch.

That's all I've seen anyway.

Just finished watching Frozen Dead on Netflix, which is a French mystery/murder/detective series. I kind of thought it was going to be about zombies, or a bit like Les Revenents...but then I guess why would anyone make a show like that again? I liked this and would recommend it, even though I was driven nuts by everyone being massively unprofessional and failing to do their job properly. The story is compelling enough and unlike The Killing etc it's only six episodes long. I loved the Pyrenees mountains looming in the background of almost every shot and there are some striking characters, so definitely worth a go if you like murder mysteries.
