What if there was no Greyjoy Rebellion?

1. Lannister fleet never gets burned, so they would have had a navy in the WOT5K.

2. Even though Balon did rebuild the Iron Fleet, it’s numbers would surely have been stronger if it had never been destroyed in the first place. So the Ironborn also have more punching power, and their infrastructure to build more is also stronger for never having been destroyed.

3. While Balon would not have had a burning desire for specific revenge on the Starks, he was first and foremost an opportunist and probably would have still overall attacked the way he did in the WOT5K, but with Theon never being a ward of the Starks Winterfell would not have fallen.

Obviously a lot changes from there, but those are the broad initial strokes I see.

Theon would have lived with the Ironborn for all his life and would be trusted much more by Balon. He would also not put so much importance to Winterfell. Jorah Mormont would also not have met with Lynesse and would be Lord of Bear Island and the marshal of Robb Stark( hey, he's got an excellent martial in ck2 ). The west would have a fleet and Tywin could sail to the North instead of having to fight in the river lands while Jaime guarded the Golden Tooth. The possibilities are infinite. Heck, Robert could have divorced Cersei and married someone else.

No Greyjoy Rebellion means no Tournament at Lannisport, which means no marriage between Jorah and Lynesse.

  1. Jeor doesn't (in theory) join the Night's Watch and become LC.
  2. Regardless of Jeor's fate, Jorah doesn't fall into debt and flee Eddard's justice
  3. The "Theon's Bastards" discussions become less fun, because he's the 3rd (or father, likely) heir in the Iron Islands
  4. Victarion doesn't learn the lessons from being anally violated by Stannis
  5. Asha isn't raised as some Ironborn Wonder Woman

A better question:  Who else chooses to poke the beast?  Without the Ironborn being made an example, do the Martells or Tyrells foment rebellion elsewhere, or earlier?  Does Bobby B get bored and invade some random places (say, the Summer Islands)?

The Iron Islands would be a good deal happier, I would imagine. Fewer dead sons and fathers, fewer widows and orphans. If they continued to prosper, that may have been attributed to Quellon's tenure, further enforcing the New Way. Assuming the Reader's sons took after their father, that would have also paved the way for a revitalized Iron Islands.

Asha wouldn't have been raised as Balon's heir, but she probably would have still become a captain. Theon mentioned in ACOK that it wasn't unheard of for an Ironborn woman to do so.

If I remember correctly, Aeron was "reborn" during the Greyjoy Rebellion, so he would still have been Theon's fun, drunk uncle.

I thought that Jeor joined the Night's Watch circa Robert's Rebellion.
