Cersei and Robert Similarities

After another Re-read I began to notice some similarities between Cersei and Robert:

Lyanna & Rhaegar

Robert was betrothed to Lyanna and Cersei had been told by Tywin that she would marry Rhaegar. They both idealise what there relationship with said partners and fantisise on what life would be like if there 'love' had survived the war.

Ned & Jaime

Robert reunites with Ned in a Game of Thrones but Ned begins to see Robert for who he truly is and no longer sees him as his 'brother'. Jaime reunited with Cersei after being captive in Riverrun but he soon sees Cersei for who she truly is and no longer sees her as his lover.

Warrior & The Maiden

Both Cersei and Robert are seen as the living embodiment of the Maiden and the Warrior at the beginning of Roberts reign. Robert grows fat and lazy and after Cersei's walk of shame, she is no longer seen as beautiful.

Bastards

Neither Cersei nor Robert have any trueborn children. Cersei is often demonised for giving Robert the horns but Robert regularly cheats on Cersei. Both sire children that resemble them and their families.

Myrish Swamp

Cersei infamously wants to see what it would feel like to take a woman the way Robert took her.

Power

As littlefinger observed, Cersei desperatly wants power but does not know what to do when she has it, Robert had no idea how to rule once he won the throne.

TL;DR. Cersei and Robert are both drunken sluts who have lost there looks and fantasise about an ideal life if the rebellion had gone differently.

Cersei's children look a lot like her while Robert's children look a lot like him.

They both favor their respective eldests.

Cersei tries to have Roberts children killed (with varying success), Robert would possibly execute Cersei's children.

Robert would've Cersei killed, Cersei has Robert killed.

Robert rapes Cersei, Cersei aborts when she's pregnant by him.

They're both the eldests of three siblings.

The drinking problem.

They are both crappy rulers, albeit for different reasons.

And there is definite irony in that Cersei's under delusion that she's the female version of Jaime, while at the end of the day she displays a lot of Robert's traits.

Robert never wanted power , nor did he rebel out of ambition .

Borç of them like to keep it in the family

Cersei with her brother Jaime and her cousin Lancel during Jaime's absence.

Robert, while having no sisters pays nightly visits to his recently widpwed cousin. I suspect if he had a sister he'd give her special attention too, especially considering the foremost reason he wanted to marry Lyanna was she was the sister of Ned, the guy he saw as a brother.

Who knows, maybe Renly who is so much like Robert, turning out gay is because of Robert keeping it in the family despite the lack of a sister Baratheon.

I noticed this too and have always found it amusing.

This is obviously deliberate on the part of GRRM.

Robert doesn't want power or responsibility; he wants the privilege of wealth without the accompanying duties.

Cersei desperately wants power, in large part to escape the systemic abuse heaped on her by her society and Robert.  The sad irony is that when she finds herself unable to cope, she imitates the two men who have had power over her in her life; the cruelty of he father and the irresponsibility of Robert.  She just doesn't have the "redeeming" qualities; Tywin's administrative efficiency or Robert's geniality.

Good analysis.

I haven't thought about the similarities between Cersei and Robert before.

Both are shit rulers, just in different ways.

This is incorrect. They died friends and Robert is nowhere near as bad as Cersei.

When Tomard had left him, Lord Eddard Stark sat staring at the flame of the candle that burned beside him on the table. For a moment his grief overwhelmed him. He wanted nothing so much as to seek out the godswood, to kneel before the heart tree and pray for the life of Robert Baratheon, who had been more than a brother to him. Men would whisper afterward that Eddard Stark had betrayed his king’s friendship and disinherited his sons; he could only hope that the gods would know better, and that Robert would learn the truth of it in the land beyond the grave.
