The Order of the Green Hand

I don’t care for video theories in general as they discourage analysis. You watch at the video creator’s pace with a lot of flashy pictures and can’t mull over ideas or cross-reference at your own pace. I think some use the medium intentionally to inhibit analysis and then post outrageous theories in order to get views. That, and there’s typically no real discussion (I mean analysis) following a youtube video as somehow youtube comments seem to be even stupider than what’s typically seen on reddit.

If anyone is serious about their theory, they need to put it out there in such a way where it can be analyzed properly without requiring people to  go through play-pause-rewind hell to do it.

That's how I see it as well. Most of the video theories are either "wouldn't it be cool if..." and presented with lots of imagery and supposed backing evidence (which due to pace may pass as being evidence but in reality it's not) or outlandish ones (that also seem cool, and "backed" in the same way). Too bad that many people who first get in contact with fan theories and content does so in these mediums and doesn't realise there's a lot more to be discussed and content with way more quality all over the web.

OotGH is crap because:

  1. They claim to never read forums, which is an arrogant mistake because how are you supposed to have discussion enough to make sense of the text and its details? Living in a vacuum has never progressed anyone. Also, I find it hard to believe that they do not visit forums.
  2. No, there is zero discussion in their youtube comments section. It is a bunch of followers commenting on how nice the guys voice sounds and how nice the girls hair looks.
  3. What does happen when you try to make a counterclaim that shows book text to back it up? They give you the line, "well, you just aren't paying attention," which is arrogant and close-minded as hell. They are making the claim that other people are just not as smart as they are, and only they found out the "truth"... all without any outside discussion.
  4. And when you watch a video and they bring up that the fact that so many other readers disagree with them, or question them, they put this picture up on the screen. That is a rather classless move.
  5. Even when they are guesting on other youtube/podcasts for other "tubers", they are rude to them. This happened in the Ideas of IF podcast.
  6. They ignore the full text.
  7. We ALL KNOW that the World book was written with purposeful misdirection. The author has said so many a time, yet they have video after video of them making crass comments and attitudes toward a fiction book written by fiction people. Grow up. There is truth in the World book, you just have to know how to look for it.
  8. Their take on Catelyn was just hilariously bad. Love Cat or hate her, the way these guys present their case is so bad that even the poster Jon's Queen Consort found herself defending Catelyn, and she reeeaaally dislikes Catelyn, as she would tell you.
  9. Their take on Bloodraven is just trash. They start the first section of the video just going on and on and on about how "gross" he is because he is an albino with a big gross birthmark and why would anyone like him or trust him, blah, blah, blah. Really? THAT is what they think the author was trying to do when developing Brynden Rivers????
  10. They ignore the full book text and they are massively guilty of thinking they know the story better than George RR Martin does. How may times do they make comments, per episode, that George got it wrong, or George doesn't know the timeline... but they do

Ok, I have to turn it up to 11...

Their video about Jon and Val being twins is so far from wrong that I generally die from laughing so hard each and every time I even think about it. I am dead right now typing this because of that video.

This post made me feel really happy I ever only watched those few bits of their vids... Seriously, Val and Jon are twins? Someone managed to make @Jon's Queen Consort defend Cat? We should be suspicious of BR because he is ugly? And Ned giving the finger to those who disagree? Next thing they'll be running their own TV show. :ack:

Oh yes. Ashara Dayne's magical uterus gave us both Jon and Val, and Ned is the father because his eyes literally change color.

:lmao:Yes! They managed to make JQC defend Cat. Even she was joking about it.

I could barely get through that Bloodraven video. I seriously had to stop it a few times and come back to it.

Classy, right? I mean, who needs discussion when you are gifted enough to perfectly know all 1.8 million words of the series and no one else does (not even the author himself).

I hear Cogman needs new interns.

What I would recommend is to advance one of the theories they propose, and we could debate it.

Simply asking people what they think of a particular channel is usually not very fruitful, and it comes across as if you’re trying to push up their clicks for some reason.

1. I was recommending people to check them out because i think they are very good.

2. I wanted to find out if they subscribed to any of their theories of if anyone was up to disproving any of their theories.

1. You can ask questions and discuss with them in comment section, facebook page and twitter. I myself have asked questions challenging some of their theories and they answerd my questions.

2. I dont see what this has to do with anything and even if it is true compared to other channels comments.

3. I dont believe you

4. Hahha i didnt notice that until you pointed it. Kind of mean i would agree if that is the case.

5. I am awfully curious about what you are claiming here. I think i have watched all of their colab videos and i have never picked up them being mean or rude to them. You have to show me this.

6. Example and what do you mean?

7. Again examples please

8. It was a fun video series they have laughed about it alot but i can understand that some people would think they go a little bit overboard but again their dislike for catelyn is mainly that they think she is involved in some sort of conspiracy. With the whole letter from lysa and catelyn saying so soon when the goldcloaks come to escort her to littlefinger.

9. Their main thing is that it seems a little bit strange that the hottest chick in the realm would fancy a quite objectivly creepy and not so good looking guy. He is not a real person so no one gets hurt and they just tried to overemphasize that part. Its quite a common thing for authors to do like the beast. On the surface a repulsive guy but he really is quite okay on the inside.

10. I dont get what they are saying you need to give examples.

11. Please explain what they got wrong. Im genuinly curious.

Hmm, the idea that "hot chicks" can never be attracted to non stereotypical attractive men is offensive. It's implying that women who are good looking are vacuous and only care for looks. Bryndon Rivers might not be real, but lots of very real people are reading/watching those kinds of comments and taking to heart the idea that not so good looking men can't ever be found atractive for who they are, women won't desire them, etc. And equally the steryotypically good looking women reading/watching are hearing yet more reinforcement of the trope that they are shallow automatically due to how they happen to look, that people will never believe their interest in certain types of men genuine.  Also bear in mind the fact lots of fans are parents and might not like to hear people with birth marks or albinism described as objectively creepy and not attractive. Because their beloved child might have one of those conditions! Or indeed there will be people in the fandom who are albino or do have prominent birthmarks. etc.

It is one thing for an author to use such things and deconstruct them within the page, to show that yes the looks are not what makes a person who they are. etc. But for people discussing those characters to reinforce crass tropes like that is not harmless. There are real people behind these posts. I'm not trying to thought police you just saying that thinking of others can help you get a better perspective on humanity.

Seriously look at bloodraven. He is an albino, he has red eyes, on the right side of his face he had a red winestain birthmark that extended from his throat up to his right cheek, he is very thin and gaunt and he has a grim forbidding creepy aspect and people are affraid off him, blame him for everything bad and think that he is mysterious and a sinister sorceror and spymaster.

It should make you think for a second atleast why the hottest girl in the world would fall for him.

Its so ridiculous saying i am offensive seriously grow up.

Hello guys have you guys checked out this channel?

They make great quality videos and some very unique and convincing theories. I feel like they might be among the few who actually have figured out a large part of the books lol.

What do you guys think of their theories? :)

Please be calm and nice in comments

I understand the need to try and get new viewers. Unfortunately, you have come to one of the oldest sites dedicated to A Song of Ice and Fire, and are promoting videos many here have already seen and found "lacking." If you want to find out why, I would suggest checking out some of the old threads where these videos and the theories in them have been discussed. Last I looked the search function was working fine.

Again, read the comments back to other YT posters, and you just mentioned above that you missed the Ned middle finger pic- which is another example, and watch the Ideas of IF joint podcast/youtube video. There were even comments made by others that pointed out how rude the guy from OotGH was and other asking that Ideas either do/or not do anymore joint videos with them anymore because they were rude.

Their "theories" they pass off a proof.

We readers all know about the World book being purposely skewed. It was intended as such. This is not something they discovered because they are such great talents. What sort of examples are you asking for to confirm this?

The World Book is purposely full of errrors. So says Martin. "George pointed out that even in the age of the books these were long-distant times with little in the way of accurate information." And Martin again.

A bit strange??? Well, that is not how they put it at all. And I laugh at this because if THAT is their take, then they do not understand the characters role and they do not understand the author, plus it is such a disgusting opinion based on their own personal bias of characteristics. Why would I trust them with any other "theory" of theirs?

3 minutes ago, KingLordPresidentMaster said:

10. I dont get what they are saying you need to give examples.

No, one just needs to watch the videos because they say this often. I am not going to go through each video and link it here on the exact time spot. The timeline (both ToJ and ancient history) they have tried to prove is one obvious example.

3 minutes ago, KingLordPresidentMaster said:

11. Please explain what they got wrong. Im genuinly curious.

This idea has been talked about many times on this forum since that video came out (last spring?). It is bogus from start to finish, and I gave two small examples above, one of the most hilarious being they claim Ned's eyes actually change color. Other issues being cheekbone height, which is a BS claim because we do not know all of the details of Ashara, and many other people and families in the story have these same features. They are filling in details that are not there. They would know that, or be reminded of that, if they had discussion with other book readers. This is a consistent problem they have in their work, that they do not (according to them) visit forums of any sort to actually discuss the material. There is not a single person alive that can get this story "right" the way they claim they do. Even the author himself works with other people, and there is a lot he knows that isn't in print yet. Hell, even with the crack whackass ideas that Preston Jacobs comes up with, even he makes the clear statement that, "I could be wrong about much of this," at the end. I do not buy most of PJ either, but he uses more text, and expanded book text (not out-of-context selections), and he admits he could be wrong.

If you like this greenhand channel, fine. I am not here to change your mind, just answering your questions. However, I find many YTubers have an arrogance to them that they are above us talkie plebes, and the longer their video series goes on, the worse they get.

You just don't get it do you?

By saying look at this unattractive guy, how can the hottest girl in the world fall for him, you are following a very entrenched social trope that attractive women are inherently shallow.

You list all the aspects of his character which you think make him unattractive:  albino, red eyes, Port wine stain birth mark, thin, has a grim demeanour. And other people having a negative opinion of him.

You basically have said; He's an albino with a birth mark, he's skinny, has a serious personality, and is unpopular. How Can the Hot Chick like him?

Which implies that as a good looking woman (and she is a woman not a girl so lets stop with the infantalisation of women please.) she would not be expected to be attracted to him. And you present her attraction to him as odd. and questionable. etc.

Because we live in a world that views good looking women as shallow.

And which views things like birth marks and conditions such as albinism as unattractive. That thinks men have to be beefed up to be sexy, that values social popularity and disregards people who struggle to fit into that world.

I'm not the one who is being immature and I suspect I've got a decade at the very least on you.

Not necessarily. Most videos I've watched just rehash the theories here with pictures. AltShiftX is good though. He doesn't use the flashy imagery and actually shows textual evidence for claims. And his take on season trailers have been spot on on many regards.

Hello lady i am not angry at you or anything i promise and i believe you are a good person but i get the feeling that you think very little of me because of a ridiculous thing. I am quite caring of people who dont feel well and are left outside yet from nothing you make me out to be some kind of offensive sexist because i make general claims that beautiful people often pick partners who are of a little higher beauty standard than normal and that it is particularly rare to see a couple where one of the partners is of significant significant lesser beauty standards than the other.

People of both genders are generally attracted to our current highest beauty standards.

I have never claimed that everyone are like that not at all.

By our beauty standards and i think all beauty standards my man bloodraven is just not generally considerd by women to be attractive. Readers should think that it is not impossible but a little bit odd. Actually quite odd.

Im gonna make this very clear. The people who are considerd the highest epitome of beauty in our world by the great mass of people generally are quite aware of how they look and they search for people who are also of very high beauty standards. Especially when they can pick pretty much any partner in the world. I cant imagine a world in which this is controverisall or would offend anyone but somehow i am offensive to you.

I think you are a little reverse immature and have taken this to far.

Did the ordeofthegreenhand say that it is impossible for hot women to be attracted to people at the lower scale of the attractiveness scale?

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/images/8/8b/Da91fd562144b8d819be0b940788d940.jpg

^^ This is the general view of Bloodraven that people had of him. He looks very sinister and unaproachable.

So you are really into really skinny, gaunt albinos with large birthmarks on their face and red eyes? That would make you quite unique i think.

Can you pick out my supposed temper tantrum please?

Stop saying the f word you offend me.:(
