It would probably be to a woman passed childbearing years, maybe already has her own children, but needed to protection of the Lord paramount for some reason or another. Bottom line is that, given the circumstance at the time, he didn't really need to remarry. He very likely married Lyarra because the two branches of Stark needed to be tied up and they'd had three sons and a daughter. So, he probably wasn't falling over himself to have anymore children. I wonder though; Getting Land for a third son is a real pain so off to KG with Loras, we are told but even Tyrells, the family Loras is from, has cousins of untold numbers and it's not just them, Lannisters, Freys and even Umbers and Karstarks two northernmost great houses from the North have cousins a plenty. Makes me think of poor plotting that one son of Yohn goes NW and another to RG due to being 2nd and 3rd sons. If uncles of Umber or Karstark from poor North get to marry, why not them also? But back on track, It wouldn't be out of place for Rickard to marry again and even have some sons, nor would it be a hardship for him to land them. Agree with the rest though. Tbf, in the case of both the Umbers and the Karstarks, it makes sense to leave the older, experienced guys to run things while the lord and his sons go off to fight. Rodrick was left in Winterfell for a similar reason. Yeah, Karstark might be a bad example given his betrayals, but the point still stands. Now when the Story starts Ned is about 34 which means Brandon would have been about 36. So assuming that Lynarra married at 17 as most girls did (or earlier) we can assume that Lynara when the book started is about 54 years old. if we assume he father is about 20-25 years older, Rodrik the wandering wolf is probably not yet 80. Indeed you could shave 4-5 years from that. after all Lyanna eloped at 15 and Robb married at 16. Rodrik could well be only 70 and Lynara barely 50.
