Who would play whom?

If I could pull any actor from any period in their career, I'd pick Gregory Peck as Ned Stark. His Atticus Finch from "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a very similar character and his relationship with his daughter, Scout, from that film echoes Ned and Arya's own dynamic.

I'd take Peter Sellers and put him in there somewhere - perhaps as Varys as he is a master of disguise, as Sellers was during his film career. And I can hear Sellers "tittering" as the spider.

Mel Gibson usually does his best work when he's playing Mel Gibson.

I thought Mel Gibson only accepted roles where he got to play a guy who'd lost his wife was out for revenge on everybody in the vicinity. Certainly I don't think I've ever seen him in a movie where he wasn't at some point bleeding from the scalp.

I've read alot of good suggestions.

Will Patton for Kevan and Connie Nielson for Catelyn are definitely going on my list.

Someone said Alan Rickman for Roose Bolton before I could.

Josh Holloway from Lost has struck me more than once but I think its just cause when I watch Lost, Sawyer immediately invokes the image I have of Jaime Lannister. I actually think Jude Law or someone prettier in a more afeminate way might be more fitting though and Holloway doesn't actually strike me as that good an actor.

A couple of new suggestions.

He may be far too old and not nearly physically fit enough, but Sam Waterston seems to me like a good choice for The Blackfish. I think he looks very similar and I hear him when they describe the Blackfishes kind but gravelly voice. Need further convincing? His imdb photo looks about right.

When thinking of Tyrion, I've decided that instead of working so hard to find a midget actor that it might be possible to digitally manipulate a normal sized actor who is more capable of playing Tyrions subtleties. He's one of the most complex characters in the book so it would be a shame to compromise this by choosing a mediocre actor who happens to be the right size. I just saw the new Harry Potter last week and Brendan Gleeson looked like he might be able to pull off a Tyrion.

That ones a sortof strange choice, I know, but I think Gleeson's a phenomenal actor and should get some part in this. Preferably something that doesn't make him the same tough oaf that he's usually typecast as.

I heard alot of good suggestions for The Hound, but nothings been able to trump my idea of Michael Wincott as far as I'm concerned.

Finally, I'm thinking of Nathan Fillion for Garlan Tyrell.... ok, I don't know if that works but I gotta put Fillion somewhere cause he's the man and Garlans my favorite character in that age bracket... so Fillion's atleast gotta go somewhere.

Yeah, Peck would be GREAT as Ned Stark (back in his younger years, of course). I was TRYING to recall who Arya reminds me of for years now, and now I finally know. Scout! Definitely!! Good call, Mike.

These three can reprise their role they played in Martin Scorcese's Casino.

Cersei - Sharon Stone (much like Rothsteins unstable wife)

Robert Baratheon - Robert Deniro (OK, closer to Jake Lamotta than Sam Rothstein)

Tyrion - Joe Pesci, shrunken down a bit more with CGI effects

Sandor Clegane - Mickey Rourke is perfect for this role (especially Sin City)

Littlefinger - Johnny Depp

Arianne Martell - Jessica Alba. I can see her physically fitting this role perfectly, but her acting skills need too improve.

Edward Norton - Doran martell (sickly king in Kingdom of Heaven)

Brienne - Charlize Theron is hot, but watch her in the film called Monster.

Eddard Stark - Jim Caviezel. Similar to his role in The Passion of the Christ.

Christopher Walkin - Roose Bolton. Pale and creepy

Asha Greyjoy - Keira Knightly. Plays good strong female charactor roles.

Khal Drogo - The Rock. See the Scorpion King.

Danaerys - Amy Smart. Hmm. How would she perform in a darker role, instead of her usual light comedies like Road Trip and Just Friends?

I've always pictured Patrick Steward as Syrio. Partly because of AMOK's portrait i think: http://amoka.net/eng/gal/asoiaf/syrf.JPG

I think alot of the suggestions are way too old or do not fit the pysical description at all. If they made a movie I would rather have little known actors that fit the roles well than a lot of everyones favourite actors. And Robert deNiro as Robert? deNiro is too old, too short and too slim.

Here's my choices, and yes, they are all older than the characters' ages in the series (Who wants an entire cast of children?)

Ned - Liam Neeson

Catelyn- Julianne Moore

Cersei- Angelina Jolie

Robb- Heath Ledger

Jon- Cillian Murphy

Sansa- Keira Knightley

Arya- Dakota Fanning

Dany- Kate Bosworth/Sarah Michelle Gellar

Loras- Orlando Bloom

Margaery- Selma Blair

Queen of Thorns- Linda Hunt

Old Bear- Donald Sutherland

Tywin- Ed Harris

It's funny... but the only two people in ASOIAF I've imagined actors for as I read them were:

Eddard Stark - David Straitharn (Good Night and Good Luck)

Brienne of Tarth - Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane on Deadwood)

For some reason, their faces seem to fit the characters.

Despite her excellent role as Jane, Robin is too womanly to be Brienne!

My picks:

Ned Stark - Kiefer Sutherland

Catelyn Stark - Connie Nielsen or Julianne Moore

Lyanna Stark - Nathalie Portman

Stannis Baratheon - Patrick Stewart

Melisandre - Angelica Huston (I can't picture her with red hair, but damn if she doesn't fit the evil matron-like woman character well )

Margaery Tyrell - Keira Knightley

Jaime Lannister - Josh Holloway, granting that he can do non-Southern accents :P

Cersei Lannister - Nicole Kidman in her prime, DEFINITELY. She might be a bit too old now, though.

Tywin Lannister - Ed Harris or Kurtwood Smith

Lancel Lannister - Leonardo DiCaprio

Barristan Selmy - Donald Sutherland

I don't think anyone could really play Danaerys or Rhaegar well...

Wow, you people have some pretty fruity taste. I could see someone as soft as Orlando Bloom MAYBE as the Knight of Flowers or some other pretty boy, but let's be serious. JUDE LAW AS JAIME?!?! I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I heard that poof suggested for my favorite character. I agree that Sawyer from Lost could maybe look the part a bit, but you really need someone with some great acting chops to get all the pathos of the Kingslayer into the role. If Brad Pitt hadn't turned so lame with Troy he could have been a decent Jaime (I'm talking about the 12 Monkeys/Legends of the Fall/River Runs Through It Pitt, who could act and was not busy pretending to be a humanitarian to diggle Angelina).

JL I whole-heartedly agree with you. I think Jude Law could MAYBE pull off the swagger, but he would have to do some serious bulking up to be any kind of intimidating. Jaime is not girly :tantrum: .

To add to my previous list:

Roose Bolton - Jason Isaacs defintely

Ramsay Snow - Jaoquin Phoenix

Syrio - Ben Kingsley

Stannis - whoever thought of Robert Patrick is dead on

Garlan Tyrell - Josh Duhamel

Davos Seaworth - Ewan Mcgregor

Mance - Willem Defoe

Aerys - Gary Oldman

more to come...
