Hope, my friends, Has a Warrior!

Jesus God! Should I be depressed that I can already pick the things that they "got wrong"?

I think that it is very important that everyone note that her pristine white dress is clearly soiled toward the end of that clip. There is EXTENSIVE textual evidence that Kahlan's dress has some dirt repellent coating. The Quad of five people made me giggle though. If Douglas Adams had written the Sword of Truth then all the quads would have had five members, you mark my words. Oh if only Douglas Adams had written the Sword of Truth.

Did anyone notice that in the trailer at the end Richard seems to say that he doesn't know zed?

Did they steal footage from the Lord of the Rings? I know that they're both shot in New Zealand and all, but that doesn't mean that they have to use exactly the same shot over the mountains, does it?

Oh, and whoever bought Sam a brand new high speed camera for his birthday ought to be ashamed of themselves. I swear that a full half of those eight minutes were in slow motion.

All that being said, I don't think it's going to suck quite as much as I want it to.

ETA: And also, what the hell is Richard supposed to be building out in the middle of the forest? Do you suppose they thought about that, or did some script editor need some business for the actor to be about and so set him to building random crap?

Who gets kocked out the moment he meets the bad guys. :)

Less material for the same amount of time. They have to cover how many, 20? or so episodes, after all. :P

I did the same thing! I kept saying "that's not how it is in the book!" I feel deeply ashamed that I know enough about these books to be able to tell.

I already complained about how dirty Kahlan's dress was in the Entrertainment thread.. of all the little things, that's the one that got to me the most. I mean, everyone knows, that dress is ALWAYS white.

I took it in a less literal manner. I think that scene happens after Zedd reveals that instead of a cooky hermit, he is in fact that world's cheap, non-union equivalent of Gandalf. Richard is probably just a bit irked that someone he thought he knew all his life is, in fact, a complete stranger.

In the trailer I was most impressed by the way the actor portraying Richard didn't radiate deadly rays of assholeishness. Kudos to him as a person, but he may have been miscast as Richard.
I own the book first rule but I never read it. Should I? I see a lot of people on here dont like goodkind, what is it about him people dont like? Is it him as a person or his work?
Well, like any long term relationship, it's complex. He's a bad writer in the classic sense; he has a problem with subtlety, he never really understood the whole "show don't tell" but, and he has trouble setting words, one next to the other, in an aesthetic, logical manner that conforms with the standards of the English language. But admittedly these faults are not uncommon among published writers and really nothing to get all bent out of shape over.

The man has "important human themes". Now, I'm all for a good theme. I'll accept metaphor and parable and even a bloody message if it's handled with some style. But Goodkind's themes are usually slathered on pretty thick and come with the explicit assertion that if you disagree with any of them you are "choosing death", which you have to admit is a little harsh. There is also the troubling point that many of his themes are morally troubling and a couple of them are actively abhorrent. One must read the books with the knowledge that when the lead character kicks small children in the face he is doing so, not out of rage or desperation or weakness, but because it is the right thing to do. Indeed, not breaking a little girl's jaw would probably be ethically suspect and more harmful to the child in the long run.

But yeah, your right, all of this probably wouldn't have merited 40 threads if he man himself weren't such a gigantic arse. His interviews simply have to be read to be believed. Not only does he claim to be a writer of literature and not fantasy at all, but he is somehow, at the same time, revolutionising the fantasy genre. He continually asserts the morality of his world view and the idiocy or juvenilety (if that a word) of all dissenters.

So as you can see, it's a nuanced distaste and one that needs to be cultivated over a period of time. If you've got the book I say read it. You may hate yourself afterwards but you will also have gained a much finer a appreciation for the non-Goodkindian life. The Important Human Themes don't get really themey until later books, but there's enough fun to be had in the first book to be going on with.

It was a few of his interviews that got the mockery going. These threads didn't actually start before Goodkind tried to explain why some people hated his books. His work itself is standard fantasy with some torture porn thrown in. The philosophy isn't too heavy-handed for the first couple books, and he even had a couple original ideas. So I'd say it's his person more than his work.

What Will said.

To sum up:

1) He is a bad writer in the sense that he has no grasp of how to write. I am speaking of the objective, quantifiable aspects of writing, such as sentence structure, ect...

2) He is a bad writer in the sense that he has no imagination; telling a story complete with every fantasy cliche you could think of, and actively plagiarizing his contemporaries.

3) He is a bad writer in the sense that he is unable to create a consistent world, plot, or characters, and is unable to create depth in any of said areas.

4) He is a bad writer in the sense that he continually reuses the same plotlines and conflicts in every novel, unwilling or unable to move forward in his narrative.

5) He is a bad writer in the sense that he is incapable of subtlety; instead bashing you over the head with every point he tries to make.

6) He is a bad writer in the sense that he is unwilling to challenge his message; instead creating strawman arguments for the proponents of his message to kick down.

7) He is an asshole because he believes that he is the greatest fantasy writer of all time. He believes that the genre was an endless loop of crap, with no moral compass before he came along. All this while actively claiming that he does not indeed write fantasy, and has in fact never read any fantasy.

8) He is an asshole because he believes himself to have changed fantasy, while the truth is that he has run afoul of every single cliche in the genre, and has actively plagiarized Robert Jordan.

9) He is an asshole because he espouses through his novels an extremely simplified version of an already overly simplistic philosophy, and styles himself a great philosopher because of it.

10) He is an asshole because he espouses through his novels an extremely monstrous version of an already disturbing and flawed philosophy, and styles himself a great philosopher because of it.

11) He is an asshole because he views himself as the only holder of universal Truth, and if you do not believe in his simplistic and monstrous version of this simplistic, disturbing, and flawed philosophy he labels you a "death chooser", and claims that you hate his philosophy because you hate life and truth and the people who love them. You are, in his eyes, "a note wrapped around a brick and thrown through a window" in an attempt to scare people away from the Truth.

12) He is an asshole because...... well because he's just a plain asshole. Read his interviews to see what I mean.

In summation, there are many reasons to dislike both Terry Goodkind and his novels. It is this perfect storm of hateable qualities that has lead to well over forty threads trashing him on this board.

And yes, you should read his books, in part because that would allow you to better understand our hatred, and in part because we are miserable pricks who want you to suffer as much as we have. But remember the first rule: DO NOT FEED THE YEARD. Meaning do not buy his books new; check them out from the library of buy them from a used book store. We do not want our hatred to lead to more money in Terry Goodkind's pockets.

But this is pretty much the perfect summation of why we hate TG:) Next time someone asks me I'll just link to this post instead of trying to explain it myself.

I'm at work, so can't really watch the trailer... but tell me, is Richard at least taller than most men? They can't have got THAT wrong, with all the textual support, surely?

(I'm looking forward to seeing his coiled fury uncoil, too)

I just watched the trailer a second time (with the sound off, this time) just so I could answer this question for you. It was an experience as painful as the first one.. even worse, because I knew what to expect.

He's not taller than the men of the quad (which wasn't a quad to begin with.. it simply became a quad when one of the men was sent away with a message.)

It won't be the first thing they got 'wrong'. I'm amazed that Tairy didn't object to every little change to his precious work....

He's gotta be taller in general because you can't be a Hollywood pretty boy and not be at least 6 foot. But in the clip he didn't seem so tall.

As to his fury? Let's hope it's coiling, because he ain't showin' his cards as to what he really is when he's introduced. :P

Actually, he doesn't look that big to me. Do you think the phrase "About as average as most men" will catch on?

LOL what is a "yeard" by the way. Ive been on these posts for months and reading them without posting for a year and heard it over and over again lol what is it. Its obviously him or something about him but Id like to hear it from you.

Dont worry I got wizards first rule at Annies Books a used bookstore ran by an old woman.

I know of the actor. Hes small. Hes a little cut but no more bigger than me and im 6 foot 180lbs. Also the trailer leads me to another question. If yall hate TG or dislike his work, how on earth did his series get greenlighted approved and an known director tagged to it but ASOIAF is in Pre stages for years? How come (put good fantasy series here) is not done but TG whos an asshole gets his shit done, wont that just enlarge his ego more? (I read 2 interviews only but i can obviously see he thinks hes god, hes very diffrent than jordan who loved his fans. TG kinda seems to alienate himself its weird.)
