Bastard of Varys
It seems to me that all the hype about VS blades is only considered a big deal in Westeros. Westerosi houses make a big deal of these blades in the same way they make a big deal of their sigils; e.g. the Lannisters think of themselves as real lions. If you were to travel to Essos, you would probably encounter more VS weapons and utilities; and none of them would even have a name. They would be valued for their rarity, but that would be about it. An adventurous member of a minor Westerosi house could potentially go to Essos, buy a VS blade, give it some catchy name, and then concoct some legend around it. And because it's a VS weapon, the Westerosi would eat up every morsel of the made up legend. The word of mouth telling and retelling of the legend would then increase the owner's prestige.
