Jacen
Yes, Garth Ennis. The Punisher character really benefits from the No-Holds-Barred aspect of the MAX line. Several times I've had to stop in shock of what I just saw/read. Each tale so far has been completely different in subject matter, and very interesting. There's five hardcover collections of his run on Punisher Max. And I also plan on getting this collection of one-shots of Ennis' as well. Theres supposedly a very good Punisher story called "The End" in it, about Frank running around doing what he does best after a world-ending apocalypse, can't wait to read that. Ran
You'll also want to get Ennis's Born, recountin Castle's time in Vietnam. Possibly want to wait to read it until after the "Valley Forge" story in MAX, though.
Max the Mostly Mediocre
Jacen, if you haven't read Born, you need to do so, and you need to do so before you read the final volume of Ennis' Punisher MAX run.ETA: I hate you, Ran.Wait, why would he want to read that after Valley Forge and not before? Roland_85
Geezus, get ready for the most fuck up shit you've read in that comic. The next Volume is full of terrible terribleness....Can't wait...
palin99999
Jason Aaron's run so far on Punisher has been every bit as good as Ennis' - in my opinion. But definitely read Ennis' run first.
Ran
Max,Mostly because that's how I read it. ;) I actually think it works pretty well as a sort of extended flashback after the events of "Valley Forge", but it's true, it was written the other way around. Max the Mostly Mediocre
Well, in fairness I can only say I read Born first and that worked pretty well for me. Guess that means it doesn't really matter ;)
Jacen
Yes, I read about Born too, so now I pretty have ordered everything Ennis did with the Punisher, and my wallet is crying. Also, despite the fact that all the other hardcover collection books seem in ample supply, volume 4 is rare and hard to get cheaply :(
TrickyNicky
They really do need to put the whole Ennis Punisher MAX run into a couple of omnibuses already. I would gladly shell out the $50-$75 per.

It's also different in tone; the Knights stuff is mostly black humor with some srsbsns mixed in, while the MAX stuff is mostly srsbsns with some black humor mixed in. Jacen
I'm not sure I would read the Marvel Knights one. Wouldn't it be tough to go back to filtered Punisher after the rawness of MAX?Also, just finished the Slavers storyline and Barracuda. The Slavers storyling was just brutal, awful stuff, but of course very powerful. Great stuff. Now I'm gonna read Born while I wait for the other storylines to get here in the mail. ipeefreeli
Young Liars is a really good, underrated series cut down in the prime of life.

The big difference is in the tone. The Max run is very much in the dark comic style of Preacher at its best/worst and treats many of the side characters as jokes. From the comments I really need to give the Max line a go - i think i read the first few but then i fell into stockpiling them.

kuroishi
GYO - Junji ItoFor some reason I cant put a cover...Urgh ! Junji Ito, I read Uzumaki (Spiral) some years ago... While I could recognize the quality of it, I don't think I'll ever read anything else by him, it's way too disturbing for my taste. But it's brilliantly done. The whole structure of the book contributes to the story, if you stop to think about it it's quite mindblowing. But you have to go through some horrific stuff... [i just did a google image search to illustrate this last sentence (and decided not to do it because it could be spoilerish) and just looking at this images again is nearly too much, urgh]

kuroishi
Yeah, you can almost feel the evil dripping from the books :DPeople are always talking about the tentacle porn, but this guy's mangas are way more disturbing. (tentacle porn is very " :ack: Yuck! How distateful!", but Ito's books are more "Aaaargh ! My eyes! What the hell is wrong with that guy?! Why would you ever think about this and expose people to it? Why?! :crying:")
Roland_85
It's a masochistic form of art, true, but still very powerful. I wouldn't ever put it in the same sentence as tentacle porn cause it's really high class. Also, tentacle porn can e be awesome on occasion :P
