Why the Joe Arpaio hate? Because he deserves it. He treats his position as sheriff of Maricopa County as his personal fiefdom where he is above the law. As this article shows about how his deputies where still shedding documents and destroyed e-mails even after a judge order them handed over to the defense during an on-going law suit against his agency. Because his agency decided that those documents were "is immaterial to the successful prosecution of the plaintiffs' case."

But he remains highly popular with the retired ass-holes in the retirements communities because they are convinced he is all that stands between them and hordes of illegal brown people who are planning on robbing and murdering all that American stands for.

Sadly, I can't even say that I believe this is the lowest thing he's ever done. The man has a depth of corruption and depravity to him that is simply unfathomable. I hope that this lady gets a real good lawyer, and I hope that she gets a nice fat check written out to her. Doesn't make up for it, but it'd be nice to know that she got a few of our tax dollars as compensation for this... As for Joe, I know he'll burn in Hell, I just hope that he doesn't take too much longer getting there. If we could just get our voting time switched to late July (when only the year-round residents are here), He (and a bunch of our other problems) would go away the very next time the ballot dropped.

and yet, Sherriff Joe was reelected by an overwhelming majority of residents. Is anyone still unsure why I hate this place?

This story is horrible! What that lady went through is torture, plan and simple. God that is horrible, these officer's obviously didn't think that woman was even human, they must have truly viewed her as an animal to treat her like that. It is just disgusting, in everyway on every level.

Allegations of cruel treatment of inmates as well as living conditions have been cited by Amnesty International in a report issued on the treatment of inmates in Maricopa County facilities.

I'm not big on Federal intervention on the local level. But in circumstances like this where individuals civil rights are being violated, I think it is appropriate.

How can news like this, and repeats of them, not galvinize the county into a revolution? The number of retirees really out-number others by that much? I'm just stunned that in the face of these evidence that people, even if they don't want illegal immigrants around, can still support this guy.

Phoenix is a strange place. Full of aforementioned retirees, college students, Latinos that for some reason don't live in Tuscan, migrant tech workers, and Spring Training.

This anecdote is only periperally political but is not worth starting a thread over so I'm posting it here.

I went to a doctor, not my regular one but a specialist, and his office waiting area had a TV and it was set to Fox News, I was waiting for the doctor to see me for over an hour. Never in my life had I thought of changing the channel on a TV in a waiting room but I was thinking it that day, apparently I wasn't the only one, there was a big sign next to the TV asking patients to "PLEASE DON'T CHANGE THE CHANNEL ON THE TV". Maybe I only noticed it because I was thinking about doing it, but I don't remember ever seeing a sign like that in a waiting room.

SO and I had stopped going to a particular McDonald's in town because it's always on Fox. We asked the manager to change it to CNN, but he said that the owner said it has to stay on Fox. So we said, fine, see you later.
