Jurble,

Ah, screw it. Tax everyone 100% of income and let the government divey it up according to "need".

:P

As long as it's State governments, right? Ones that can separate folks along the lines of color.

ETA: Jurble, fix the link.

Here's what I don't get about criticism of taxes in this country. Throughout this decade the gap between rich and poor in this country has grown exponentially. The middle class as we've known it throughout our lives is continuing to shrink and yet for some reason half this country is up and arms about increased taxes on those over $250,000. Why are common people sticking up for the rich over having a decently funded public university for their kid? It's not rational in an economic sense.

Also, yes, the marginal rates were outrageous prior to Reagan, but no-one actually paid that. There was an arcane system of deductions that allowed anyone with resources to escape from a large share of that tax burden.

No.

Jamie,

You mean the Tax Attorney/Accountant employment program?

Is it because so many people still believe in the American Dream of getting rich, even though what qualifies as rich is beyond *99.9 % of them?

*that stat was taken out of my gimpy ass :P

Holy crap. Those rates are mind-blowing.

Dude. I sooooo know. I mean, look at how low the current top bracket rates are compared to back in the 60's (thereabouts) when the U.S. wasn't a debtor country but a lender country! Holy frakking shit, the trend in rates recently are kinda similar to the trend before the Great Depression too! Well, I'm convinced. We need to be taxing that top %1 of disgustingly rich folk much more. They might as well donate a bit of their monies to help fund social services for the large amount of poor folks in this country off the backs of whom they made their dishonest earnings. Give a little back, yaknow?

Nah, 1913-1915 is the best.

Hmmm... A friend of mine once said (paraphrase), "Shouldn't these people give back to the system that allowed them to get that rich to begin with?"

That's crazy talk.

Anyway...

Honestly, those income tax numbers are ridiculous. Utterly absurd.

And yet, there's no revolution in sight. Comfort is too mighty a motivator. Unmotivator? Demotivator?

Because people are stupid and they watch FOX News and listen to Rush Limbaugh (who are all paid spokespeople) who lie to them. :D

No, because every fabulously rich person got that rich with smarts and hard work, and fuck you for jealously wanting to dim the glow of these captains of industry and commerce, you fucking socialist fuck.

People are not taught to think for themselves. Too many people doing that and the status quo is in jeopardy.

It's not JUST stupidity and the desire for comfort. I think it's because the system is pretty much water tight. You get locked into it and have very little wriggle room by the time you are in your mid/late twenties. Hell you're locked into it from birth, really.

'captains of industry and commerce' :lmao:

I wish more people called me a 'fucking socialist fuck', it's all around closer to the truth than 'fascist' or 'commie'. 'Merkan folks in the places I've lived don't seem to know the difference between their political and economic philosophies :P
