I should have started this earlier, but I propose we run a knock-out competition during our re-read. The rules are the same as in the previous "Survivor" threads on the old board: every week, we pit pairs of chapters against each other. Every board member gets one vote per pair. The winning chapter proceeds to the next round. This continues until the winning chapter, the crown of FfC, is identified. Good news: this time, the Oberyn–Viper fight cannot win.

To get the ball rolling, we need to decide the results of all the pairs we already discussed in this thread. (After that, we will only vote for the pair currently being read.) So here is the big first round of 10 battles (including the "current" Ironborn chapters):

1. Prologue–Prophet

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin)

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black)

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral)

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod)

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos)

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets)

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!)

My votes:

1. Prologue–Prophet

Aeron is a great character.

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin)

Extremely well-written first Dorne chapter

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black)

Difficult call. The snowflakes melting in Sam's hair do it for me.

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral)

I love the scene in the Hall of Lamps

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod)

I just had a big grin on my face after this chapter. Dunk and Egg ride again.

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter

I may be unfair, because the Asha chapter is good as well.

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight

Cersei drunk as a sailor, bathed in the green light of the burning Tower, leaning on her white knight. Great scene.

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos)

The Samwell chapter is very well written but so depressing that the vote goes to Randyll's first major appearance

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets)

The vote goes to Cersei. Harys Swift consents. Gyles Rosby coughs.

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!)

The kingsmoot is a very good set piece. Spine-chilling.

1. Prologue–Prophet

I for one think it is the best chapter of the whole book.

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin)

Not that I am very fond of Hotah, but we had been waiting so long for an insight of Dorne.

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black)

Almost random choice. Brienne is just boring, Sam at least met some intersting people.

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral)

At last a good view of Tommen. Plus very interesting political evolution. Plus SER KEVAN.

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod)

The depiction of Tywin's corpse is terrible.

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter

Hum... Only Tristifer Botley saves the last chapter.

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight

Poor gallant Arys.

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos)

Eventually seeing more of Sam's father is good.

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets)

Good chapter

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!)

Very cool chapter

1. Prologue–Prophet - Aeron is great POV, IMHO

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin) - I love all Dorne chapters, except Oakheart's

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black) - probably best Sam chapter

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral) - perhaps weakest of three Arya chapter, but she is still my favorite POV in this book.

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod) - this Jaime chapter is one of those which could be easily cut out, IMO.

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter - no very fond of both. Asha chapter is probably more interesting, even if I dislike her POV.

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight - Arys chapter also is redundant, IMHO

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos) - ditto for second Samwell chapter

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets) - perhaps the best Cersei chapter.

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!) - kingsmoot is really great scene.

Not particularly into this sort of thing, seeing that the best chapter is the one I think best (unless someone can convince me otherwise) :), but WTH:

Prologue - Facless Men > Ironmen!

Cersei - Sets the scene for her subplot.

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black)

Brienne rules!

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral)

Arya - Faceless men > Cersei

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod)

Brienne rules!

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter

Sansa - she's more interesting than Asha!

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight

Soiled Knight - Difficult one, but sex sells!

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos)

Brienne - another difficult choice, but Brienne rules!

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets)

Cersei - while I detest her person and dislike her storyline there are so many interesting tidbits in this chapter.

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!)

Aeron - much more memorable chapter.

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin) (Thoroughly enjoyed the Areo/Doran interaction)

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black) (didn't enjoy either much)

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral) (I enjoy Arya chapters in general)

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod) (yawn)

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter (go Sansa)

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight (didn't enjoy reading about Oakheart's guilt trip).

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos) (Sam II would get my vote as worst chapter)

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets) (Jaime II was utterly boring, the new small council promised some fun scenes)

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!) (although it was kind of a downer to see the guy with the greatest promises wins).

1. Prologue–Prophet: I enjoyed learning more about the CItadel and Oldtwon

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin): I love Dorne! :)

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black): I find all Sam chapters very interesting and touching

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral)

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod): I liekd a lot the reference to Dunk's shield, and Brienne meeting Pod

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter: Litlefinger's first lesson beats Asha

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight: a difficult one

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos): Maester Aemon beats Randyll Tarly :D

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets): the smallest council chapters is one of the best of AFfC IMHO

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!)

In the interest of actually getting a result anytime soon, I'd suggest voting on the later chapters before we get to that point in the re-read. Also, do you plan to randomize the pairings after the first round is done or leave things in book-order?

Anyway, here're my votes:

1. Prologue – Prophet: Though I enjoyed the Prologue, I didn't caught much of what happens on it (such as Alleras and Jaqen). On the other hand, whil really no new info was revealled, I found Aeron's chapter really well written.

2. Captain of Guards – Cersei I: The Sand Snakes steal the show.

3. Brienne I – Samwell I: A couple of weak chapters if you ask me, but perhaps Brienne's shows some new interesting aspects of the Westerosii.

4. Arya I – Cersei II: Tywin's funeral is really interesting.

5. Jaime I – Brienne II: As said before.

6. Sansa I – Captain's Daughter: Having an inside view of Littlefingers conspiration is priceless!

7. Cersei III – Soiled Knight: Perhaps it was an unnecessary chapter, but both the hystorical bits and the manipulation of poor Arys were a pleasure to read.

8. Brienne III – Samwell II: Though Sam is a better person, his father's chapter was more interesting.

9. Jaime II – Cersei IV: I couldn't stop laughing when discovering Cersei's new council...

10. Victarion – Aeron: Euron King!

1. Prologue–Prophet. Religious fanatics are always fun to see.

2. Captain of Guards–Cersei I (finds Tywin). It's hard to pick, actually REALLY enjoyed both of these chapter, but I love me some Sand Snakes. :D

3. Brienne I (Rosby: meets Shadrick) – Samwell I (leaves Castle Black). Snowflakes in his hair...I cried a little. :cry:

4. Arya I (arrives Bravos) – Cersei II (Tywin's funeral). NO contest. I can't STAND Arya's chapters anymore.

5. Jaime I (stands vigil) – Brienne II (Maidenpool: gets shield, Pod). Jaime's chapters are great.

6. Sansa I (Nestor Royce visits) – Captain's Daughter. The exact opposite of Arya's chapter. Can't get enough of her chapters.

7. Cersei III (Marge/Tommy wedding) – Soiled Knight. I love Arys-I've been in a few of those situtaions myself. Poor bastard. I feel your pain.

8. Brienne III (Duskendale: meets Randyll) – Samwell II (passage to Bravos). Big fan of Randyll's no nonsense attitude, even if he is a bigot.

9. Jaime II (Kevan leaves) – Cersei IV (small council meets). Kevan rocks.

10. Victarion (arrives at Kingsmoot) – Aeron (Euron King!). Gotta say, I sucked in my breath when I heard his plan.

From now on, I won't add short summaries to the chapter titles, because we are expected to know that happens in them, and I don't like to skew the vote by finding something memorable.

My vote:

One chapter has a Weirwood in it. The other doesn't. Easy choice.
