[TV Spoilers] I'm sick of Ros

Ran, it's somewhere in the comments of his NAB. I actually how that might work - with the knowledge of the leaked Pilot-script in my head, but he did not answer this question ;-).

Right now practically every character could think and talk about her in a future volume of the books:

- Tyrion

- Theon

- Jon

- Littlefinger

This will make it not that difficult for GRRM to include her in some fashion into the books. He could even write a short novella or two or three about her, laying out she shaped both the personalities and desires of half of the characters of the series ;-).

And that would be fine because those would be separate and original concepts. This series already has 4 established books with no character named Ros. And the only solid reason I've heard as to why she's in it so much is that George and the producers liked her so much as to give her more screen time and a potentially more important role.

Ack. :ack:

That just doesn't sit well with me at all. I get the necessity of economizing things a bit but ffs ENOUGH!

What annoys me the most about her is what's tossed out to give her screen time. Possibly my favourite line in aGoT is missing from episode 7: "Life is not a song sweetling. One day you may learn that to your sorrow". It's the line that defines Sansa's entire arc and helps build Littlefinger's character without the need for a sex show and pantomime villainy.

She's a pair of tits and... Well there's nothing compelling or even interesting about her.

I missed that scene as well, and I really do hope they will include it in another episode - 'The Pointy End' maybe, where Sansa is likely dragged before Cersei and the Small Council to write her letters. It was stupid to remove Loras, Sansa, and Varys from the scene in the throne room in my opinion.

I like her character well enough, and the actress is pretty cool.

But I dislike her presence in the show. It's like someone read the four books so far, thought a little, and then said, "You know what, Mr. Martin? You just don't have enough hookers in your books!"

As for the role that she will presumably fill, whatever it will be, couldn't it just be filled by one of the other 4567432 characters ASOIAF already has?

Whatever.

IF they wanted to make one of the whores more prominent, why couldn't it have been the one played by Emily Diamond? She is soooooo much hotter than Ros.

For those that don't know who she is... she was the one that Jory was staring at right before he lost use of his eye (and his life).

Yeah I agree. it's such a shame because I think Esme is great in the role and Ros is a witty, engaging character (despite that talking through teeth thing, ha). But expanding her role to bigger than that of eg. Sandor, and when you think of all the stuff that was cut due to time constraints, it just seems odd. She's even mentioned in episodes where she doesn't appear! Dunno if they are setting her up for something, e.g.

a death scene, maybe when Cersei arranges to have the whore and baby Barra killed, she tries to protect them and dies? Just throwing stupid ideas out there, I know. Or she is being set up as a replacement for Chataya/Alayaya, though I don't know how that could work as she seems to work for Littlefinger now and how would that work with respect to Tyrion's secret route to Shae?

I am confuzzled. I think they have overdone what could have been a fun minor character.

Will be interested to see people's thoughts on Episode 7 when it's been seen by everyone.

My 2 main annoyances with the use of the character:

1. We have had 3-4 long scenes with Roz, couldnt we have had the Blackfish included in season 1 instead?

2. Because of the usage of this character in ep. 7 I feel like I have genuinely sat and watched porn with my father and sister, that was not a level I wanted to take those relationships to....not ever. Sure, this is HBO, but that scene went way overboard in its length and detail.

I'm not a huge fan of her character. She's attractive and a good actress, and if they felt they needed to show Tyrion with someone for his establishment, fine. And if they needed to spice up the exposition of Theon for the eighth time, fine (though I think the sexposition has reached comical proportions). And I have no issues with making Theon falling for her a bit -- he's an arrogant jerk, but he's also a teenager.

The issue I more have is with Ros herself as she continues to be a consistent character and not a slew of different prostitutes. She's by far the most generic characters I've seen, and between her and Doreah we're getting a lot of the "Happy Prostitute."

I'm sure these women who put on a happy face for their noble clients especially, and there are always people who look on the bright side of life. And in that era more than now, it was a more common profession (though I think the public stigma was higher than it seems to be in Westeros).

So there's nothing inconsistent. We don't see Ros hanging without a pimp or client around. But the Littlefinger scene especially just kind of runs of that line of male fantasy, doesn't it? The happy, horny hookers who want nothing better than to have sex with you? I know the other prostitute is supposed to be proving/learning she can fake it, but Ros is just playing the role of the man...

The more we see of the prostitutes, the more I'd like some reality inserted.

I just had to quote a sentence that uses the words "prostitutes" and "inserted" with no sexual connotation whatsoever... brilliant!

My take is that she will almost certainly be

replacing the 'ayas. I do not believe she is truly "working" for LF right now, but was instead placed there by Varys after he recalled her from Winterfell. LF truly seems to be evaluating her talents as a prostitute in that scene, while simultaneously revealing his whole diabolical plan - something Varys would certainly be interested in.

They've gone to far with her character. Those who haven't read the books are take her for being much more than just a sounding board for other character's exposition. Many think that she is a super-spy/assassin planted in the north by one of the powers-that-be in King's Landing, and other such nonsense.

IMO Episode 6 should have been the last we saw or heard of Ros. There is only one whore who is allowed to rise to the rank of "story character"... Shae.

It's upsetting to me that her firebush has had more screen time than the Direwolves (most have yet to be named, or even seen on screen), Sandor, and Robb (& Rickon) combined. She's also had more dialogue, and been talked about by more characters than Robb himself, and he has a big part coming up.

Lord of Winterfell and King of the North... upstaged by some tits, and fire kissed pubic hair.

Not to mention all the things we wont be seeing at all this season instead. Riverrun (and the Blackfish) being a sore point for myself.

I do find it pretty strange that she's gotten way more screen time than Robb Stark, who seems to have had about 5 minutes of screen time so far. The nudity is great and all but let's see some more characters get some screen time! Her scene in episode 7 went on WAY too long.

I suppose I never properly responded to the question posed by this thread. In doing that, I'll just say that I don't mind the character in the slightest but I do wonder about what her long term purpose is. It would be odd to feature her so much and then simply abandon her story. If there is some purpose to Ros, I don't think the attention paid to her is a big problem.

Also, while I do think the scene in the brothel was a tad gratuitous, I do understand the reasoning behind it. Clearly, they wanted us to know where she ended up. If her character later becomes important, then this is a necessary piece of information. Granted, the sex scene itself was not needed but Littlefinger did need somebody to explain his back-story. The only other character that could have fulfilled this role was Catelyn but how was she supposed to do that? In the book, if I remember correctly, this is done through her own internal thoughts. She doesn't actually tell anybody the story. Obviously, that wouldn't work in the television series. So Littlefinger had to do it, and it had to be to someone that couldn't actually act on the information.

And the sex scene? Well, let's not kid ourselves -- HBO thinks the audience will not support endless back-story without something pleasantly distracting. They have a longstanding policy of throwing explication into sex scenes. It is, what it is. Frankly, I prefer Ros scenes to scenes of Tony Soprano bouncing on top of Carmela -- I got way too much of that in six seasons of The Sopranos.

Did he really though? I think we'd have got on fine with a slow unveiling and hints at his personality rather than the whole bond villain speech. They've cut out several of his moments where he shows his acumen and deviousness eg. the manipulation of King Robert to lessen the threat to Dany or his creepiness and dubious agenda telling Sansa life is not a song. A very foreboding line in the book but would hardly have any impact in the show as they've gone all true confessions with the subtelty of a 50 person bukkake. It weakens the characters and the intrigue but it has also weakened the story imo. His actions in ep 7 weren't at all suprising and no where near as dubious and complicated as in the book where i genuinely felt he gave Ned a chance.

As to the Sopranos well i think Tony was barely on top of Carmela at all and even then it was brief and since neither actor exposed anything during the 7 seasons, hardly explicit. I agree that it feels like they're treating the audience as simpletons. I don't feel that it's "just HBO" as some posters have said. They are capable of the most intelligent and frankly ponderous TV that makes no concessions to accessibility or even comprehension. Look at Deadwood or Treme. Good shows but by god they're hardly CSI: Miami (YEEEEAAHH).

Other than the first episode i've not really complained about the nudity but this girl is everything wrong with how it has been done. She's a pair of rent a tits. A stripper (sorry burlesque dancer) hired to titillate while the real actors do their job. Her sole qualifications seem to be how hot she is and how willing she is to remove her clothes. Where is my Jaime/Cersei love scenes, Robert/Cersei (c'mon who didn't want to see that dynamic?), Ned/Catelyn... They even seem to have lost interest in Dany/Drogo now the rapey is gone.

I think you made the right arguments but came to the wrong conclusion. Your very first line "Did he really though". Well, the answer is "Yes", because of the very reasons that you stated. The show took out the small scenes and hints of his deviousness, so we never really get to understand his motives. This scene was a little heavy handed, but simply explained his base motivation for what he did to Ned, and why he's been skeeving on Sansa, and will probably help to explain his future involvement with Sansa. There just hasn't been enough time to set up some of the characters with enough detail to make sense. Littlefinger, Varys, the Hound, Cercei, and others aren't being given the detail they were in the books and that's understandable on an adaption of this scale. If you didn't know Littlefinger from the books, would you have any idea why he betrayed Ned if this scene wasn't included?

It seems as if most of the complaints revolve around the fact that Ros is getting screen time when "My" favorite character isn't. The post about Blackfish is a perfect example. How much sense would it really make to have to cast, pay, and introduce another actor that gets 15 seconds of screen time and doesn't have any major impact to the story? I'm fully behind saving costs by cutting characters/scenes that don't have any real impact if it means the budget can be used in better ways.

Lastly, this scene wasn't about Ros... it was about Littlefinger. They could have easily had 2 random whores in the background, but why not use someone who the viewers already know and who seems to be well received (at least among non book readers)? It makes even more sense to include her if she's going to be replacing or consolidating other characters.

Having said all that, I'm not really a fan of her, myself.
