I don't think Westeros is smaller. The writers probably just aren't overly concerned with timeline issues that can be fudged or ignored.

I remember when someone asked Babylon´s 5 creator how long it takes to reach places and he said "Ships move at the speed of the plot". Which means in fantasy-fiction these small details are forgoten as poetic license.
