Recommended Posts

Name:House Bowsand

Sigil:A Half-White, Half-Black Feather and an Arrow of Gold over a tropical blue banner

Motto:Loud as an Arrow released

Location:An island given to the king that lies between Seven Kingdoms and the Summer Islands

Weapon:A Golden Wood Long Bow with intricate design named Erron's Reach formerly owned by a Summer Island Rebel

Backstory:The House was made a decade after the island was given as gift to the seven kingdoms. A rebellion had risen in the summer islands and it was a bastard son of a Lord in House Gargalen worried for his mother who relied on trade from the Summer Islands sailed to stop the rebellion however stupid the idea was. With men more sailors than soldiers he was still able to sneak into the main camp with a handful of men and defeated the rebel leader killing him with the rebels own bow and arrow as he tried sail away earning him the thanks of majority of the Summer Islanders. News of his victory returned to Gargalen and how the Summer Islands gave the Rebels Island to him as a gift for ending a war before it started and dubbed him Bowsand for the improbable shot he made against the rebel leader, his first shot with a bow no less. Eventually the island was allowed to be part of the seven kingdoms as "their" land in the Summer Isles naming the son of Erron Sand now Erron Bowsand a lord, Archer (which is more on the fathers exploits considering the boy preferred the spear).

Name: House Redfang

Founder: Vanyros Redfang

Sigil: Front facing, open-mouthed purple viper with blood-colored fangs on a field of black

House Words: Strike Fast, Strike True

Unofficial Motto: "Shadows hide much..."

Seat: Bloodbane Hall

Location: Directly south of Sandstone on the shores of southern Dorne.

Sworn to: House Martell

House Weapons: Deepsting (a short dagger of Valyrian steel, black as ink. Legend has it that the blade, by some sorcery, is perpetually poisoned with manticore, scorpion, and viper venom-- thanks to your friendly neighborhood Spellbinders of Asshai). It is accompanied with and complemented by Direbite, a long, thin Braavosi-styled rapier made of the same type of Valyrian steel as the dagger.

History: The history of this House has been largely lost as time marched on or (as some whisper) intentionally obfuscated by the Redfangs themselves-- Redfang was the name Vanyros chose when he took his seat at Bloodbane Hall, not their original name, which has been forgotten. While the Redfangs claim Old Valyrian heritage, unlike the Targaryens and the families behind the Black Wall of Volantis, they are apparently not Dragonlords but the descendents of the slaves who overthrew their cruel masters in the dread mines of the great Freehold. Some say they were mere slaves but some whisper that the ancestors of Vanyros were one of the first Faceless Men who beganto give the Gift to the slaves who toiled in the red darkness of the Fourteen Flames. The Redfangs were among those who left Valyria with other escaped slaves. Eventually, when the Rhoynar warrior queen Nymeria sailed with her Ten Thousand Ships across the Narrow Sea, Vanyros Redfang sailed with her, and if the Redfangs say it true, was high in her counsel. Vanyros was allegedly her Spymaster and if the tales that are left us are to be believed, a master assassin .This could be why mention of any Redfangs is missing from the surviving histories of the time. When Nymeria burned her ships and took Lord Mors Martell as her husband and tamed Dorne with her vast host, Vanyros was given Bloodbane Hall for his loyalty and service. Lord Vanyros is said to have chosen the viper (a creature most consider treacherous and foul) as inspiration for his newfound House's sigil and words because of the ruthless speed, agility, and efficiency with which a viper killed its prey.

After settling at Bloodbane and taking a lesser Dayne as wife, Lord Vanyros left Bloodbane Hall: always wishing to explore, know, and improve his abilities as bestower of the Gift, Vanyros took to the seas and traveled the known world and beyond. On his dark ship, the Miasma, he was one of the few former slaves who dared to sail back to Valyria. He was also said to have traveled to the cities on the Slaver's Bay, to Naath and the Basilisk Isles, deep into the heart of Sothoryos, to Qarth and the Jade Sea, to Yi Ti and Asshai by the Shadow. Sporadically would he return to Dorne to fulfill his duties as husband and Lord, only to sail away for years at a time. It was on one of these journeys that he had brought Direbite and Deepsting home, a rapier and dagger both wrought in Valyria and rumored to have been ensorcelled in Asshai. Deepsting is rumored to be a perpetually poisoned by some of the most poisonous creatures in the world, never needing reapplication. Direbite is said to cause flesh to rot if the blade breaks skin, although no one knows if these blades have these properties because they were Spellbound in Asshai or because of the expertise that Redfangs had with poisons.

Redfangs look much like their Dornish neighbors: dark of complexion and hair but where the Dornish are thought to be passionate and fiery in life and love, the Redfangs are just the opposite. While there are exceptions, Redfang children are generally dour, brooding and quiet little things that grow to become men and women who are eerily cold, calculating, and seemingly aloof. If nothing else, Redfangs are raised to be thinkers above all else. However, Redfangs are said to be fiercely loyal to House Martell and while slow to anger, once awoken, are terrible in their wroth. The Redfangs did not tend toward the size and dimension of many of the Andal Knights who are tall, broad of shoulder and chest, and swing large, clumsy swords like clubs. Instead, Redfang children tended to be thin, tall, and have a dogged, wiry strength to them. It was partly this reason why the children of the Lords and Knights of Westeros learned mace and lance and sword and Redfang children were taught the rapier and dagger, training in the Braavosi style of the Water Dancers. Some claim that the Redfang ancestor who had been a Faceless Man taught his children his arts before he passed away and that this tradition continues to this day. Indeed, all heirs to Darkbane Hall are taught the martial arts as well as alchemy, herb lore, anatomy, spycraft, and most importantly, the mastery of poisons. Every Lord of Darkbane Hall was considered a master of poisons: their production, administration, and concealment. In addition, there has never been a Lord Redfang at Darkbane Hall without a Shadowbinder from Asshai at his side. The rumor now is that the Shadowbinder at Darkbane Hall served the current Lord Redfang's grandfather yet still looked only like a man only slightly past his middle years and that in the dark watches of the night, the Shadowbinder and Lord Redfang offer prayers and supplications to terrible shadows that cast shadows themselves so dark they seem to darken even a moonless night.

The current Lord of Bloodbane Hall is Lord Tyvetros Redfang, named the Vexer. Tyvetros is thought to be so adroit in poisoncrafting, the late Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper himself, had apprenticed with Tyvetros at Bloodbane Hall to master the craft from Lord Redfang and augment the Red Viper's own not inconsiderable knowledge of poisons. He has two children, Heir to Bloodbane Hall, the the nine-and-ten Navyros Redfang and his sister of six-and-ten, Rhoynas, called the Maid of Scorpions for her chilling demeanor and menagerie of poisonous pets at Bloodbane Hall.

Name: House Longhorn

Sigil: A bull skull with one black horn and one white, on a red field

House Words: Strong as the Hoof

Unofficial Motto: We Will Always Run

Seat: The Hoof, a towerless, wide castle surrounded by thick black walls in the middle of a wide empty plain

Location: The central Reach, roughly between Goldengrove and Bitterbridge

Sworn to: House Tyrell

Religion: the Seven

House Weapons: The Horns, twin longswords. One is Valyrian Steel (the white), the other is Dragonglass (the black). The Lord of the Hoof is expected to fight skillfully with both weapons at once

History: House Longhorn is an ancient house that dates its founding back to the coming of the Andals. Much of their history has been lost, but they were known to have called themselves kings for nearly a thousand years before finally swearing fealty to House Gardener. Their lands have always been large, but only sparsely populated, as they are flat and relatively dry, making them less than ideal for agriculture. The Longhorns' millenia-old solution to this has been to rely almost exclusively on cattle for sustenance and income. The landscape is dotted with dairy farms, but they are far better known for their beef herds. An old Longhorn boast claims that fully a quarter of all the beef eaten in the Seven Kingdoms comes from Longhorn lands. Though a bit of an exaggeration, there is no doubt that The Hoof produces more beef than anywhere else in Westeros. The Longhorns, who boast a well-respected old name and an estimated fifty head of cattle for every person who lives on their lands, have raised a sizable treasury from their herding economy.

With a sparse populace, the Lord of the Hoof is lucky if he can raise a thousand swords when his banner is called. However, Longhorn men are known as the best riders and hardiest marchers in the Reach. Years of droving cattle and taking herds out long distances to pasture have given even Longhorn smallfolk a taste of what real war is like.

I have to admit that halfway through GoT I thought of what my House would be.

Name: House Varthon

Sigil: A brown hawk against a dark green banner

House Words: Forever the forest.

Unofficial Motto: With wind we fight.

Seat: Varhall

Location: Central Wolfswood. The exact location of Varhall is unknown to Citadel cartographers. Only sworn rangers of House Varthon and ravens can find it.

Sworn to: House Stark

Religion: The Old Gods. The weirwood at Varhall is said to be one of the oldest, largest, and most beautiful in all of Westeros.

House Weapons: Silence, a longbow made of weirwood and said to be thousands of years old. Silence is wielded by the Lead Ranger of Varthon.

History: House Varthon traces it's current lineage to the Age of Heroes. Bran the Builder had a lead huntsman and falconry master named Terryn Varthon, who served the Starks with unyielding fealty. His passion for the hunt caused him to appreciate the beauty of the Wolfswood and the secrets held within. Terryn understood the value of balance in nature, and always hunted what House Stark needed, and never more. He took a niece of Bran as his wife, and founded Varhall in the middle of the Wolfswood. Varhall is a traditional wooden long hall that can seat up to five hundred men, yet always seems warm and cozy no matter how many visitors are present. House Varthon has produced some of the finest rangers ever known in the North. A peculiar custom of Varhall is the way they view service on the Wall. Many rangers find it honorable to take the black, and often do so even if they have committed no crime.

The rangers of Varthon move through the Wolfswood like shadows. They use bows and longswords to strike swiftly at their enemies. It is said that the rangers are the best bowmen in all of North Westeros. Their best allies in the hunt are the swift brown hawks found within the Wolfwood. Each ranger takes a hawkling upon his first year of ranging and raises it to be his own. Often times ranger commanders will send their hawks as others do ravens, with the confidence that their message will be received. Their sworn loyalty to House Stark has never faltered, and they also protect the forest from raiders such as the Ironborn, who look to take wood to make ships. This is a main source for the longstanding conflict between Varhall and House Greyjoy. During Robert's Rebellion, House Varthon immediately declared for House Stark and played a crucial role in winning the Riverlands for House Baratheon. When the Ironborn rose against the crown, Varthon rangers held the North whilst Robert and Ned gathered troops to put down the rebellion. When Ned Stark was decapitated and Robb Stark declared war, Varthon summoned all available archers under their young Lead Ranger, Storyl Varthon. They rode swiftly down to Moat Cailin and held until Robb's host could arrive, then made for the Whispering Woods and scouted the Lannister armies. They conducted many successful raids around the Golden Tooth and Hornvale. Varthon rangers were instrumental in the capture of Jaime Lannister. Whilst waiting at Riverrun, Storyl's father Arrol sent word that he was very ill, and Robb granted Storyl and many of his host leave to return to Varhall. Only a few rangers were present at the Red Wedding, and they escaped to tell the truth of what happened on that grisly day.

Currently Varhall sits quiet in the Wolfswood. Rangers attempted to assist Deepwood Motte, but found themselves outnumbered by Ironborne. Varhall has ignored all claims to the throne by Stannis, and reject his red god as blasphemy. Storyl has sent rangers and ravens to the Manderlys in the hopes of finding the remaining Starks and restoring order to the North.

House Name: House Harley

House Words: "Ride the Wind"

Sigil: An iron horse Rampant on a vertical brown bar, on a field of green (a stylized road)

Castle: None. The Harleys were raised to the style of 'lord' and granted title to empty lands in the north, but true to thier roots chose to remain nomadic, returning to thier lands only for harvests, feasts and weddings, all of which are held outdoors at huge gatherings called 'Ralleys'

Ship: Wind Rider, one-of-a-kind 80 ft Barque with a hull of soldier pine and a weirwood keel. The ship's figurehead is a stallion's head carved of weirwood. The sails are green and brown canvass bearing the Harleys' Arms.

Sword/Weapon: Whirlwind, a huge single-bladed Axe engraved with runes of the First Men in bronze inlay along the hilt and face. It is said to have been imbued with powerful magic that Hothor Harley used to cut living weirwood for his ship Wind Rider.

Location: A tract of land along the northeast coast of the North, north of the Dreadfort and south of Eastwatch-by-the-sea. Currently these lands have been usurped by the Boltons as the current Lord Harley is away from Westeros, however the smallfolk remain staunch for Harley as they are mainly fisherfolk and revere the Harleys' reputation as both sailors and honorable Lords.

Sworn to: House Stark (The Harleys are Stark loyalists despite having been away from Westeros for the duration of The War of Five Kings).

History: The founder of House Harley, Alyx Snow was the baseborn son of a fisherman’s wife and some Umber who’s name is lost to history. He was raised a fisherman by his mother’s husband who taught him how to sail and fish the icy waters of the North. He was a passable fisherman, but proved adept at tying knots, fitting planks, and other tasks associated with maintaining a boat. Quickly seeing that his skills would earn the family more in a large port than a tiny fishing village, his parents sent him south to the town that would later be called White Harbor to find an apprenticeship as a boat builder. There Alyx was apprenticed for 3 years, learning to hammer and saw by day and by night learning to ride both horses and women from Fast Ferryn, the eldest daughter of the stable owner who lived next door. Alyx proved as adept at riding as he was at shipbuilding, until Ferryn proved the truth of her name when she found amusement elsewhere in the form of a southron merchant’s boy. Distraught to learn of her perceived betrayal, Alyx stole into her father’s stable and liberated Harley, her favorite steed, from it’s slatternly owner (she had always claimed the Iron-colored steed’s prowess was the source of her nickname) and slipped out of town intending to return to his parents’ village. Coming upon a grove of weirwoods not five minutes’ ride from town, he stopped to ask the old gods’ advice.

Meanwhile, as Alyx’s mount fled White Harbor, other visitors were tying up at the piers – raiders from across the narrow sea. Unknown to Alyx, they swept through the streets putting the town to the torch and the residents to death. Alyx was unaware of the carnage taking place nearby until, listening for a response to his prayers, he heard the sounds of battle; screams and shouts and occasional thuds, and his nose noticed the faint reek of fire upon the wind. Immediately perceiving the nature of the threat (which could not have come from land, as an approaching host would have been seen passing his grove), Alyx mounted his dead lover’s last remaining horse intending to warn the north of the raid. Such was his intent, but the North is large and horses frail and he did not plan on getting much further than a few miles that first day, yet fueled by sorrow and rage and determination he rode all the way to the gates of Winterfell itself, where he chanced to meet King Jon Stark returning from a hawking trip. Seeing a lone rider in obvious distress, the King hailed him and inquired about his situation, whereupon Alyx related his story and gave warning to the King about the raiders. When the King realized that Alyx had ridden his grey steed the better part of 3 days without stopping in order to warn of the attack, he commented that the horse must be iron to have survived such a ride, and invited Alyx to join his host for the march back to meet the raiders and drive them back to the sea. That he did, as history tells us, for Jon Stark is known as the King who drove out the raiders and rebuilt White Harbor into the fortified port city of today. For his part in warning the king, and for his bravery in the following battle, King Jon raised Alyx to the title of Lord, bestowing upon him certain lands along the coast northeast of Winterfell. Alyx took the name Harley in honor of the steed that bore him to glory and the lover who perished in the attack, for she had been the one who taught him to ride. For his arms he took an iron-grey horse, rampant on a stylized road, to represent his ride to Winterfell.

In the years following Alyx did not immediately take up residence on his lands, choosing instead to live at White Harbor and make a living as a shipwright; ultimately a fortuitous choice given that the other shipwrights had perished in the attack. As the only trained and apprenticed shipwright in White Harbor he made an excellent living and began amassing the fortune that sustained House Harley through the following years. To this day the Harleys have mostly eschewed their ancestral lands in favor of nomadic lives on the sea or upon the roads of Westeros and Essos.

House: Caster

Sigil: Gold coin melting on a black background.

Moto: Unknown

Location: Bayasabhad

House Sword: None

The Casters descend from Thomas Casterly, only sibling of Lord Jerald Casterly. When Lord Jerald was swindled out of house and home by Lann the Clever, Thomas (then 15 years old) slayed his older brother Jerald and his 3 sons. He dropped the "ly" from the end of his name and departed with Jerald's wife Natalie heading north to plan a way to retake the estate.

With a large fortune and 1000 men he made is way to the Stone Shore where he settled for a number of years until he caught an early glimpse at the beginning of the Long Night as fleeing and dying Children of the Forest passed through is temporary settlement. Reading the writing on the wall, something his brother never could do, he crossed the Bay of Ice and plopped his temporary settlement in the NE corner of Esteros founding modern day Kayakayanaya. He planned to raise increase his army and avoid the conflict with "the others" while hoarding his fortune to put himself if a position to sail bad to Casterly Rock and retake the estate once the Long Night had ended and Westeros was weak.

Unfortunately he died of the cold waiting on the winter to end. He and Natlie had 8 Sons and 5 daughters in anticipation of the harsh winter. All were thought to have perished during the Long Knight, however 3000 years later...5000 years before Aegon's Landing ... Thomas Caster II (oldest Son of Thomas Caster) emerged in Asshai and had apparently been preserved in a quasi-state of living after devoting a decades to the study of blood magic. He had grown tired of life and used his last energy to breed with an young but strangely strong Red Priestess. He died before the child was born, but his son Harient Caster was schooled in the arts of many different forms of magic.

The decedents of Harient are said to be the Lords of a great and rich estate 100 leagues west of Bayasabhad, hidden by a powerful glamor. They are now an incestual house of dark mages supposedly wielding great power as a result of mixing various magic practices over thousands of years. It is said they have mastered death and leave the world when they are ready. As a result there is rumored to be as few as 10 generations linking all the way back to Thomas Caster and the age of Heros. Some older theories claim Harient was fascinated with the Long Night and it's origins and speculate that the great house had interbred with the remnants of the Others, but those are unsubstantiated.

Nobody has seen or heard of the Casters in many thousands of years however they are said to be lurking, waiting, for the Others to return at which time their true nature and mission will be revealed.

Name: House Fox

Sigil: A snarling Fox head over two diagonally crossed scythes on a red field.

Motto: Your doom has already been proclaimed.

Religion/History: House Fox worships the voices, said to have inspired the House's founder, Lucien Fox. Lucien was initially a peasant working the wheat fields near the Trident until the war came to the region. Having seen his life destroyed, Lucien took up the sword of the fallen Prince Rhaegar and the title of the Reaper. For over 60 years he scoured Westeros and the Free Cities as the Reaper, dealing out his own brand of justice, an eye for an eye. Such notable victims included Lord Silas Frey who was mutilated and nailed to the gates of his castle in the shape of the word 'Reaper' after his butchering of a peasant mob demanding better wages.

Eventually Lucien had his sword reforged into the scythe Soulcleanser and acquired the lands he once worked from King Robert as a reward for his aid in the Blackjoy rebellion seeing how the land's previous lord had been cut down on the Trident. Gathering the scattered remnants of the Trident's people's, the now proclaimed Lord Fox built a great wall around the region to safeguard it's people and their replanted wheat fields. The abundance of this essential food combined with it being at a central point in the realm on the Kingsroad has led to great riches entering in the area which collects at the regions new capital, Foxberry, so named for the union of House Fox and House Berry, a minor bannerman of the Vale of Arryn. Nowadays it is rumored that House Fox is in command of the 'bringers of justice' known as the Reapers, sworn to deal what is deserved to all the peoples of the world, until the voices of those wronged no longer whisper to the Reapers and the Soulcleanser has made their tormentors atone for their crimes.

House Name: Beerbane.

Lord Cletus Beerbane- First of his name, Shield of Privyton, Lord of sheep and stain, Warden of the Waste.

Sigil: Two warriors bearing shields, one armed with a turkey leg and the other with a horn of ale; set on a brown field.

Words: "Are you ready for some jousting?"

Unofficial words: "Can you spare a copper?" "We do not sow...or bathe." "Unkempt, unproud, broken." "Ours is the Fury (followed by a farting noise)." And many, many more...

House Sword: Slayer of the Old Gods....Actually a wooden stick with a sharpened point, though currently unsharpened. According to Beerbane family legend, it's made from rare "Valyrian Wood." Nicknamed "Backscratcher" by fellow marcher lords. Lord Cletus claims that this is because the sword is so long that it always stabs straight through an opponent's back. Some say it's because of Lord Cletus' reputation as a backstabber. However, most think that it's called "backscratcher" because the Beerbanes use it as a back scratcher.

Seat: Sheepstain Hall, over looking Privyton; Northwestern part of the Dornish Marches.

Liege Lord: Disputed by Houses Baratheon, Tyrell and Martell...all of whom deny ever asking the Beerbanes for fealty.
