House Name: House Kellett

Castle: Long Watch, located at the top of Long Lake

Current Lord: Darron Kellett, Lord of Long Lake and Long Watch

Sigil: A brown wolf curled around an ice white lake, against a white field

Words: We are the Cold

Unofficial words: Can you feel the cold? (Originated by Wilham Kellett, the second Lord of Long Watch)

House Weapon: Long Dark, Valyrian longsword (Dark grey, black in colour)

Sworn to/Alliances: House Stark, Last Hearth, Braavos, White Harbor, and the Night’s Watch.

Castle Design: Circular, with the left side inching out into Long Lake. A dock is within the castle, with a gate to let boats out. In the center of the castle stands Long Tower, a tower that extends up 100ft into the sky, which allows sentries at the top to see enemies coming miles off. At the very top of Long Tower there is a statue of Bill Kellett, the builder of Long Watch. He is standing, looking defiantly out at his lake. The Lord’s chambers are located towards the middle of the Long Tower. There is a Godswood on the West side of the castle (the side of Long Lake), with a weirwood. There are gates on the north, east, and south sides.

History: Long Watch was built by Bill Kellett, a master builder and swordsman, who was raised in Braavos. His father was Bohred Kellett of Westeros while his mother was Tris DeBoe, a Braavosi. With his parents too poor to support three people, Bill was fostered at a building facility where he was raised as a builder. However, he loved swordplay and practiced with other men every day. When he turned 18, he received a Valyrian sword from his father with the information that the Kelletts were descended from the Starks and Umbers. The Valyrian longsword, called Honor, incited Bill as his father was just one of the many Kelletts to remain in the Free Cities, hiding from their claim to the North. Bill vowed to return to his true land and create a castle that would be worthy of a highborn family, and that would bring prestige and power to the Kelletts and the North. He had reached amazing heights as a builder in the Free Cities so many were eager to accompany him on his journey to create this new castle. He was also able to enlist builders when he revealed his true heritage. When in Westeros, he picked Long Lake, in-between Winterfell (The Starks), and Last Hearth (The Umbers) for his castle. Long Lake also would provide the Kelletts with a water source and a means for trade using boats. It took Bill and his thousands of builders 20 years to build Long Watch, a circular castle with a 100ft tower jutting from the center to give the castle a massive range of vision to all sides. When it was finally complete, Bill created his sigil, words, and renamed Honor, Long Dark. While building the castle, Bill fell in love with one of the Braavosi builders, Rym, and married her at the castle’s completion. The two had 4 children, two boys and two girls. When other Northerners saw what Bill had created and recognized that he was a long lost lord come to reclaim his land, they flocked to Long Watch, immediately populating it. The first opposition to Long Watch came from White Harbor, who was upset at the Kelletts having boats in the White Knife. White Harbor marched on Long Watch and also attacked by boat, but the Kelletts, with the better position and leadership, smashed them and won the respect of White Harbor, who pulled back after losing its soldiers at a ratio of 15 to 1. After Bill Kellett died, Rym, who was also dying, ordered a statue of Bill to be erected at the very top of Long Tower. The next major opposition to Long Watch and the Kelletts was when Wilham (called The Smuggler), Bill’s first son, smuggled Ashyra Tyrell, a princess, out of Highgarden. This caused the Tyrell’s to rise, wanting to destroy the Kelletts once and for all. The Kelletts surprised the Tyrells by riding out to meet them on the open field south of Long Lake. During the battle Wilham met the Tyrell prince, brother to Ashyra, and killed him, driving Last Dark up through his throat, saying the famous words, “Can you feel the cold?” which became a common saying for Keletts. Seeing their prince dead, the Tyrells lost hope and were thrown back to Highgarden. Victorious, Wilham and Ashyra married as they truly loved each other, not just Ashyra being Wilham’s prize. There has been no opposition to Long Watch since then, and the Kelletts have thrived, becoming a power equal to Winterfell. Bill Kellett’s dream of bringing prestige and power to the Kelletts and the North was finally fulfilled.

Today: The current Lord of Long Lake and Long Watch is Darron Kellett. The people of Long Watch are strong builders as befits their history, strong with boats, and are still involved with the Braavosi as they built Long Watch along with Bill Kellett. The Kelletts support the Nights Watch as much as possible, trying to elevate its prestige and the respect it gets, just as Bill did with House Kellett. The Kelletts do not often journey south and remain relatively secluded behind their walls except for the boats that trade with White Harbor and other cities when Long Lake is not frozen.

House Name : Belshoals

Castle: Tunny*as in funny*Round...TunnyRound

Current Lord : Eldlo Belshoals

Sigil : an arse jammed in a privy

Words : You see your Doom

Unofficial Motto : White Rags won't save you

Sworn to : House Stark

Faith : The wooded

House Weapon : WoodWhick. A peculiar rare wooden half hand sword with a diamond pieced edge, crafted by the Children as a gift for peace. Dipped in fresh excrement once a year to retain that smooth finish. Bronze inlaid in the wood. Exceedingly sharp, but must be wielded diamond edge first against valryian steel.

History: The Belshoals house is very old in esteem, despite the crude humor present in their honorifics. They are a house birthed in the conquest of the first men, when the children of the forest weren't legends but visible entities. The name comes from the sworn sword of the first chieftain who hit the cold lands, and gave battle to the little men. The story goes that the sworn sword was a loyal man who when his chieftain fell ill with a bad bowel and couldn't leave the crude hut to give battle to the invading little men, he stood outside in the mud where they'd made a hole for excrement removal and guarded his leader, who could only be seen by his buttocks smashed into the opening. Wave after wave of little men came, and he held his nose AND his ground, killing and being wounded in turn. He finally fell to a spear thrust to the leg, and when he knew death was certain, he was saved by his chieftains sword thrust through the privy hole. When the fighting was over, he was given the honor of being raised to staunch defender of the tail. As time went on, the chieftains became known as Starks, and Kings of Winter. The Defenders of the Tail became lords in truth, and they hold the tall pass leading into the mountains of the clans. The castle is on the northern side of the mountains, and is in spitting(uncouth say shitting) distance to the wall. Any wildlings that find themselves free on the kneelers side of the wall, must try TunnyRound to get to Winterfell. And thats not where anybody wants to be.

TunnyRound is where most of the second sons of the clans find themselves when snow gets deep and food is scarce. TunnyRound is nicknamed The Gate That Grinds, by those unfortunate enough to be assailing it. It has never been taken but once, when a second son rebelled for the sole purpose of changing the house honorifics. His elder brother retook the castle by means of the secret privy entrance his father showed only him as first born, and he sent his younger brother to the wall. He had no sense of humor.

Tunny Round is a strong castle, with choice defensive strategic placement that bares a resemblance to the Bloody Gate, though its creation is at least two hundred years earlier.

House Belshoals is known for its soft humor and infectious laugh. Its needed, with the honors of the house being so easily japed. In the North, the House is respected for its age and origin and strength, derived from the still active diamond mine in their lands whereas the southrons, common and noble alike find it an easy target for laughter. But laughter stops when 6000 men in plate mail with diamond edged swords march towards their keeps. The second wealthiest northern Stark bannerman, preceded only by the Manderlys, due to trade and shipping.

House Name: Grayford

Seat: The Owl's Tower

Current Lord: Brandon Grayford

Sigil: A golden barn owl with a silver star on either side and another below it on a dark blue field,

Ancestral Weapon: Gray Lady, a steel mace given to House Grayford by King Maekar I Targaryen for its founder's service in putting down a rebellious lord.

Words: Always Watching, Always Defending

Religion: Faith of the Seven

Sworn to: House Stark

History: House Grayford came into being when Ser Willem of the Grayford, a hedge knight from the Riverlands, showed extreme valor after joining the ranks of a royalist host led by Maekar I Targaryen to put down a rebel lord. During the battle, Ser Willem and his twin brother Ser Laith of the Grayford rallied a group of conscripts who were about to flee the battlefield and led them through the enemy line and over the town wall in order to open the gates and secure the royalist victory. Ser Laith was killed during the sack of the town. After the battle, Ser Willem was brought before a mortally wounded King Maekar and awarded lands and a recently abandoned tower on Flint's Cliffs on Cape Kraken. Upon seeing that Ser Willem's sword had been shattered during the fight, Maekar gave Ser Willem his own mace.

Ser Willem arrived a few weeks later at what was then known as The Cliff Tower shortly after sundown. It had been abandoned by the servants after the death of the previous heirless lord (from a branch of House Flint) and was devoid of human life. When Ser Willem reached the top of the tower he found a barn owl sitting in the window facing the sea. The owl calmly studied Ser Willem, and continued sitting on the window quite at ease. When Ser Willem descended the stairs, one of his companions asked what he thought of Cliff Tower to which he responded, "Cliff Tower? Seems to me this is the Owl's Tower." The name stuck and Ser Willem adopted the owl as his sigil. A few months later he married a daughter of House Reed of Greywater Watch; Lord Stark unexpectedly came to the wedding to congratulate his new bannerman and hear Ser Willem's oath of fealty and to bestow upon him the duty of watching the sea for Ironborn raiders. This duty was taken to heart by Ser Willem, as reflected by the House's words. Ser Willem and his wife had a son, named Maekar, and twin daughters, Mina and Rhae.

The House's main source of income is from pelt trapping and trading and from a moderate amount of fishing in the adjacent town of Cliffton. During the Summer it's possible to have small scale agriculture, but nothing too extensive due to somewhat poor soil. Since its founding the House has had to defend against at least seven Ironborn raids. House Grayford contributed to the Northern Hosts during the Greyjoy Rebellion and the War of the Five Kings.

Name: House Weir

Sigil: Blue Boar on a White Field

Motto: Nothing Truer Than Truth

Unofficial Motto: Never Trust A Man Who Won't Do Ruffies With You

If you have a Western European last name you should look it up because these are all actual things of the Weir family except of course for the ruffies thing because they didn't have that in the middle ages.

I must be redundant, forgive me:

House Name: Beerbane.

Lord Cletus Beerbane- First of his name, Shield of Privyton, Lord of sheep and stain, Warden of the Waste.

Sigil: Two warriors bearing shields, one armed with a turkey leg and the other with a horn of ale; set on a brown field.

Words: "Are you ready for some jousting?"

Unofficial words: "Can you spare a copper?" "We do not sow...or bathe." "Unkempt, unproud, broken." "Ours is the Fury (followed by a farting noise)." And many, many more...

House Sword: Slayer of the Old Gods....Actually a wooden stick with a sharpened point, though currently unsharpened. According to Beerbane family legend, it's made from rare "Valyrian Wood." Nicknamed "Backscratcher" by fellow marcher lords. Lord Cletus claims that this is because the sword is so long that it always stabs straight through an opponent's back. Some say it's because of Lord Cletus' reputation as a backstabber. However, most think that it's called "backscratcher" because the Beerbanes use it as a back scratcher.

Seat: Sheepstain Hall, over looking Privyton; Northwestern part of the Dornish Marches.

Liege Lord: Disputed by Houses Baratheon, Tyrell and Martell...all of whom deny ever asking the Beerbanes for fealty.

Name: House Cougar

Sigil: The Cougar’s House colors are black and scarlet. For their House sigil, the Cougars adopted a mythical beast with the face of an aging but still comely woman attached to the body of a fearsome shadow cat.

House motto: Ours in the kinky

Unofficial motto: The Cougar ladies like ‘em young

Location: Somewhere south of kings landing, where the weather is hottest very late in the day

Originally hailing from Dorne, the Cougars follow the traditional custom of equal primogeniture. Yet they are unique in that over the years, they developed a system of inheritance based on matriarchal principles—the house, lands, and title will be given to the eldest female child; should the Lady produce no female heirs, the family castle, lands, and title will be granted to an aunt or the closest living female relative.

The history of the Cougars is eventful and drenched in myth. Word has it that the House founder, a shadowy figure known as Lady Demi, was in fact a witch who employed a number of arcane rituals and spells to maintain her youthful beauty even in advanced age. Whatever the truth of these rumors, Lady Demi’s open contempt for her aging, paunchy, balding husband, not to mention her habit of employing scantily clad young men to act as her cupbearers, stewards, and personal body servants, did much to encourage the rumors that would led to her blackened posthumous reputation.

When her aging, corpulent, and increasingly balding husband Lord Samwell Tarley I died in mysterious circumstances during a hunting expedition, it led many to whisper of foul play. Such whispers only increased when Lady Demi took a sudden interest in Devan Kettleblack, a lusty, black haired young man of one and twenty; rumored to be the illegitimate son of a local baker. She proceeded to endow him with lands, gold, and a knighthood, for reasons that to this day remain unclear. However, in doing so, some whisper that Lady Demi started a family tradition. It is customary for the ruling females of the Cougar line to express unguarded interest in numerous young men, a trait which increases dramatically after these women reach the age of forty. The fact that lady’s of the cougar house inevitably marry to produce heirs does not deter them from surrounding themselves with dozens of handsome young men. This custom has led to an unofficial motto of sorts: “the cougar lady’s like ‘em young.”

Name: House Blueblood

Sigil: A Knight in white and red, holding a spear, wounded with various shafts with blue blood dropping from the wounds, fighting several men.

Motto: We are the Remnants

Location: On the shore, between Karhold and Widow's Watch, near the dreadfort

House Sword: A 12 foot spear with a handle of dragon bone and a leaf shaped shaft of Valyrian Steel

Castle : Victory

Sworn to: House Stark Of Winterfell

Army: 8.000 professional soldiers

- 6.000 Pikemen, their main force, fighting in the phalanx formation, equipped with light plate and oak shields

- 800 Knights, used to hunt down the archers of the enemy, and spread chaos within their ranks. Most are equipped with old plate armors from the time of the invasion that have been passed by generations, and are kept as treasures by the family members

- 1.200 archers, used to protect keeps and break other armies spearmen.

Story: House Kitos was one of the most powerful houses of the old Andal empire and were known because of their martial lifestyle, that trained every man since they were children to be courageous fighters. As a result the best soldiers of the andal empire came from them. They fought using the phalanx formations and by using knights and archers just as support to their pikemen. The first Blueblood, Amadeus Kitos, was the fifth son of Lord Kitos and was a renowned war commander, that won half a hundred battles and was regarded as one of the best commanders of the Andal Empire. During the Andal invasion Amadeus armies ( 7.000 men ) were sent to secure the northern shore to prepare for a amphibious invasion. He won the first battle and secured one fo the biggest castles of the north, know as Great Keep, which he renamed "Victory". He went on with his mission until the Stark of Winterfell assembled his host and met him for battle. In that battlefield Amadeus lost his first battle, and most of his host. They retreated back to Victory and were sieged by the Northern host. His food was nearly over, only two thousand of his men remained alive, and half of that were able to fight, while the starks had ten times their numbers outside. And so he launched one last attack agaisnt the starks. A task force of 600 spearmen escaped the castle and hit the starks from behind, burning their camps while they were sleeping, the starks had nowhere to run and there were hundreds of archers on the castle raining quarrels on them. The Lord Stark, Umber and Flint were escaping to warn the other lords about what happened when Amadeus caught them. He was pierced by dozens of arrows but was capable of fighting the lord of winterfell on a duel. The duel lasted an hour until Lord Lyonel Stark died, and so the battle was won. As they took Amadeus in, cheering for his victory they noticed that blue blood was coming out of his wounds. He was named Blueblood by his men and adopted that name for himself. House Blueblood stood independent for a thousand years until the coming of Aegon, when they bent the knee to Lord Torrhen Stark.

House Blueblood income comes from trading timber with Braavos. But otherwise they are poor, with most of their equipment being inherited from their ancestors. Since the last dragon died they have been ever more independent from the starks, not sending soldiers to fight on any war they find pointless.

House Name : Greystark

Seat : Greystark Castle, located in the Lonely Hills region, right in the mid-distance between Last Hearth to the north and Dreadfort to the south. It was an old abandoned holdfast when the Greystark first took it, but over the years, repairs and developments had made it a medium-sized formidable-looking castle.

Current Lord : Ivan Stark, Lord of Lonely Hills

Sigil : A howling wolf, headshot only, against a white field

Words : Fealty Infinitely

Sworn To : House Stark

Faith : The Old Gods

Ancestral Weapon : Courage, a scimitar-like sword, stolen from a Dothraki warlord a long time ago by an ancient Greystark in an adventure across the sea and brought it home with him. Rumoured to be made of valyrian steel, though no current member of Greystark household for generations now has ever seen another one to be absolutely sure that Courage is made of such steel.

History :

History tells all that the Greystarks, an old noble blood, offshoot from Winterfell’s Starks, were completely obliterated during their attempted coup with the Boltons against their liege lord many centuries ago. The coup was thwarted, the Greystarks were uprooted from their holdfast at Wolf’s Den by Jon Stark and his army, and Dreadfort was besieged for four years before the Boltons finally succumbed and again bent the knees to the Kings in the North. But if the Boltons were granted mercy and allowed to keep their castle and demesne until present day, the Greystarks were all wiped out and their Wolf’s Den was taken over and later given to the Manderlys on what would become White Harbor.

At least that’s what the maesters wrote on their history books.

Towards the end of the rebellion, a sage old maester at Wolf’s Den pleaded with Jon Stark to spare the last remaining child of the Greystarks named Willam, aged ten. Maester Arthos reminded Jon that Greystark and Stark were kin, that killing kin was a capital sin in both eyes of gods and men, and that Willam was an innocent child with good nature at heart. Lessons had been taught to all would-be traitors in the North, and Willam, showing excellent aptitude in writing and numbers, would be a helpful hand at the court in Winterfell, the old master argued. Jon relented, but he would not allow a descendant of the Greystarks ever set foot in Winterfell. He instead granted an old holdfast in Lonely Hills and all the corresponding incomes in the demesne to Willam and his future Greystark descendants, and commanded the maester to be his regent until he came of age. There were terms to be strictly followed, however. The Greystarks shall never be formally recognized by other lords, big and small, in the entire realm; they shall never be allowed at court in Winterfell; though they and their subjects were allowed to trade with whomever they were pleased, they shall not attend feasts in Winterfell at the end of summer and shall never present themselves at other lords’ courts or receive other lords at their court; they shall not raise their army even if other bannermen were called by Winterfell to defend the realm, and shall not have trained soldiers unless for the purpose of town and village watches; and all the other lords in the North were instructed not to recognize them, the maesters not to write about them. In short, Willam and his descendants were allowed to live, but were not allowed to exist.

Centuries and generations had passed and everybody seemed to have forgotten, or at least decided to overlook, the younger wolves in the Lonely Hills. It all changed, however, towards the end of the War of Five Kings. Syfall Greystark, Lord of Lonely Hills, on a discrete order from Ned Stark just before the liege lord made his way down south to become Hand of the King, called up his able bodied subjects from the two towns and many villages in around the hills to sharpen their swords and spears and prepared themselves at a moment’s notice when needed. Ned was vague in his instruction; he only said that Syfall shall not make a move until further instruction. Ned would then die a traitor’s death at King’s Landing, and his heir Robb shortly after, and Winterfell was sacked by the Greyjoys and then the Boltons took the seat there through his bastard’s marriage with Ned’s little girl. And through all this, Syfall remained, waiting and watching as the events unfolded : Stannis’s host was destroyed by winter; the Wall withstood the Others but the worst winter storms in decades killed many in the North; a strange girl with three dragons from a faraway land came to claim the whole realm and destroyed King’s Landing, but her dragons soon perished (one died mysteriously, some said by poison; another was killed in the battlefield after a ballista pierced its eye; and the biggest one was killed by a pack of direwolves north of the Wall) and she soon followed, after leading the biggest battle Westeros had ever seen, one that left Houses Lannister, Tyrell, and Martell virtually obliterated; and if the northerners had to gravely contend with winter storms, then the southerners died by the thousands by a multitude of plagues some said carried over from the east.

Yet through all these maelstroms, Winterfell was still held by a Bolton. On the eve of spring, however, when the harshest of winter was starting to lessen, Wyman Manderly produced the true heir of Winterfell, Rickon Stark, now a teenager, along with his direwolf, Shaggydog. Along with him also came his long-presumed lost sister, Arya, and her own direwolf, Nymeria. Syfall took this as a sign, rallied his soldiers from Lonely Hills, presented himself just outside Winterfell to the other loyal lords. The Battle for Winterfell had begun; Syfall Greystak took the van, scaled the wall, and fought fiercely and valiantly, and after a four-day bloody battle, the thousands of Bolton, Frey, and Dustin men inside finally threw down their swords and the loyalists took control of the ancient castle. Roose and Ramsay Bolton, Barbrey Dustin, and all Frey lordlings were slain. At last, after a seemingly long time, there was a Stark in Winterfell.

A few days later, Syfall’s oldest son and heir, Ivan, led a loyalist host east towards Dreadfort, now being held by its castellan. The castellan refused to open the gate and pledged fealty, so Ivan led his troops to storm the castle. In just a few hours the battle was over and the castle was taken.

Rickon Stark was declared as King in the North, and as one of his first royal decrees as a king, he broke the norm that was set by his ancestor Jon a long time ago : he formally recognized the Greystarks of the Lonely Hills as one of his most loyal and fiercest bannermen and restored their place among all the northern lords.

Today :

Five years after the Battle for Winterfell, which left Syfall gravely wounded with a chest concussion (though he never showed it in public), the current lord of Lonely Hills is his eldest son and heir, Ivan Greystark. Ivan has two younger twin sisters, Amy and Ary, and one younger brother, Didot. He’s married to Alia Woolfied of Ramsgate and has two young sons, Zed and Rhae.

Greystarks rule over two towns and about ninety villages all around the Lonely Hills

Army :

In the Battle for Winterfell, the Greystarks were able to raise more than 4000 foot soldiers, including around 1000 archers, and about 500 horses. The soldiers were mostly armed with swords and spears and oaken shields, while their armor was mostly chain.

Today, the total number of soldiers ready for call-ups has risen only slightly, but the number of horses that can be provided has risen significantly, with almost half the regiment’s men can be equipped with horses if need be. The quality of weapons and armor has also become significantly better.

Name: House Dachsar

Seat: Stormy Keep. Located on the cliff known as "The Furious Point," the easternmost tip of Cape Wrath. The Stormy Keep is more affectionately known as "The Badgerhold," in part because approximately seventy-five percent of its square footage is subterranean. The Dachsars also maintain the Seastone Beacon. Located on a solitary Rock approximately one mile east of The Furious Point, the beacon could hypothetically be used as a nigh-unseigable holdfast, though it would be far to damp to be pleasant.

Current Lord: Ser Karl Dachsar IV

Sigil: A rampant badger griping a thunderbolt underneath a black cloud on a dark blue field.

Words: "To the Death"

Unofficial Words: "A badger is deadliest when cornered"

Sworn to: House Wylde

Faith: The Seven

House Weapon: Badger's Maw, a two handed morning star.

Description: Though known for their short stature (members of House Dachsar rarely grow taller than 5'7") they are also remarkably wide in the shoulder and are generally thought of as physically imposing despite their lack of height. The house words apply not only to courage on the battlefield, but to the family's attitude towards honor, loyalty, and respect.

History: House Dachsar has enjoyed the position of chief bannermen to house Wylde for centuries. Well-to-do, as far as landed Knights go, their full muster includes 20 knights, 200 archers, and 300 infantry. While not adept at jousting, the house has a strong reputation for excellence in the melee. Karl Dachsar is known to have lasted a full 10 minutes against Robert Baratheon in one tournament.

Location: A island on the sunset sea, near the iron islands and lannisport, has the size of old wyk.

House wapon: A war hammer encrusted with gold leaves and a black diamond

Castle : Great Tower

Sworn to: No one

Army: 4.500 sea raiders

History: 1.000 years before Aegon's invasion, the most notorious pirate in the world was Reznov "The Red" Fyeros, who haunted the seas with his 200 oars wargalley, Demon. He and his crew raided from lannisport to asshai, and were known, and feared, by any sailor. But one day they attacked the vault ship of the iron bank of Braavos, and when they were escaping with their plunder, the Sealord of Braavos got them. The battle was fierce, but there were 10 ships against Demon. After a hour of battle Demon sank, and most of its crew died. The only one that survived was The Red. During the battle he entered one of the braavosi ships and escaped. So, he returned to Braavos and there gathered a force of 1.000 pirates, who would help him in the robbery of the century!

No one really knows how this really ocurred, all it is known is that The Red escaped the Arsenal with "The Giant's Hammer", the 800 oars dromond that the Sealord of braavos owned, 4 Wargalleys and the Vault ship from the Iron Bank of Braavos. He settled with his fleet on a small island near Lannisport, where he established himself as "The Pirate King". His house lived for 40 years until a Braavosi fleet reached the Great Tower, burned it and salted its land.

House sigil: A solid silhouette of a silver sea hawk, wings outspread, set on two silver circles (one inside the other) to form the image of a compass symbol with the sea hawk's beak representing the north point. The sigil is set on a maroon field

House words: Eyes to the North

House seat: Western Cliff

House sword: A long, narrow blade called Squall. It is made of a precious Braavosi steel, long since extinct, and is re-forged on the same day every 50 years by a member of the same family of greatsmiths that have served Western Cliff for over 2000 years. The blade is engraved with a new motif of the oldest female Mathiw's choosing after each reseting but the hilt bears the sea hawk sigil of the house. The pommel is made of pure amber, encasing what house lore has long claimed to be the eye of an Other.

The immediate family of House Mathiw:

Lord Haydin Mathiw - Lord of Western Cliff and the Bay of Winter

Lady Emeel Mathiw - Mistress of Western Cliff and born of House Karstark

Quillan Mathiw - the oldest son at 19 years and heir to Western Cliff

Lady Efa Mathiw - Quillan's twin and Mistress of the Great Harbour

Tommis Mathiw - the youngest son at 14 years and second in line to Lord Haydin's title

Ser Noa Mathiw - Lord Haydin's younger brother at 25 and commander of the house guard and naval forces. Third in line to his brother's title.

Ser Frances Mathiw - Lord Haydin's youngest sibling at 23 and a sworn brother of the Night's Watch at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea

Lady Ana Mathiw - Lord Haydin's mother and widow of his late father, Lord Emlyn Mathiw. Born of House Cerwyn.

Background:

Previously a minor house and bannermen to House Stark, the Mathiws were released from such service some 2000 years before the beginning of the events of book 1. The release was a reward for particularly loyal and courageous conduct in service to Winterfell and it was at this time that the first of the Lords of Western Cliff - Lord Steffon - was granted the narrow lands to the west of the Wolfswood where he established his seat. Western Cliff, mounted on the cliffs above the Bay of Winter (to the south west of Bear Island), is a great fortress towering above the sea with a massive curtain wall stretching in a semi-circular motion from one end of the cliffs to another, sealing the castle inside. Within the walls, Western Cliff enjoys unusually fertile farmland but it is in the Great Harbour (first constructed by Lord Davos Mathiw some 1500 years ago) that House Mathiw has made its fortune. Sitting below and to the north of Western Cliff, the Great Harbour has developed over the centuries into a thriving, prosperous town and is the largest trading port in Westeros beyond King's Landing. For centuries the Mathiws have become rich from hosting and procuring the various trading ships and merchants who have established themselves in the North's largest commercial hub. The eldest female member of the line holds the ceremonial position of Mistress of the Great Harbour.

While House Mathiw has never been particularly bellicose, as one of Westeros's great houses it has always been careful to protect itself. Western Cliff is heavily fortified and shielded by the sea at its back. A wicked set of sea defences stand between the open Great Harbour and the large internal chamber beneath the cliffs that acts as the Mathiws' personal harbour. Should any aggressors breach the sea defences, this apparent weak spot is rendered useless by a mighty iron door that hangs over the entrance, in the internal chamber, to the great stairwell that leads upwards through the rocks and into the bowels of the castle. The highest tower of the castle functions in two ways. A massive flaming torch sits on a rotating stone mantle. When lit and facing towards the wild, western waters, the light acts as a marker for ships at sea. When rotated to the east, the torch acts as the first of a series of beacons that signal distress to Western Cliff's closest allies beyond the Wolfswood, the Starks of Winterfell.

As people, the Mathiws are shrewd, watchful, thoughtful and well tutored in the history and politics of Westeros. Beyond the obligatory declarations of fealty to King's Landing, and aside from their active support for the Starks during Robert's Rebellion, they tend not to meddle in or concern themselves with the scheming and intrigue so rife within the realm and so favoured by the other great houses. With their wealth and relative isolation from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mathiws are viewed with a mixture detachment and slight suspicion by many of the families. In particular, relations with the Greyjoys of Pyke have been frosty for centuries, the presence of two great houses on the western shores of the Seven Kingdoms causing inevitable friction. The men of the Iron Islands have long coveted the trading vessels of House Mathiw but have been hesitant to engage due to the large naval forces of the Mathiws and their close relationship with House Stark. Owing their very existence to Winterfell, the Mathiws have long been loyal allies of the Starks and while no longer serving as bannermen, there have been close relations (including inter-marriage) for centuries.

What sets House Mathiw apart from all the other great families (including the Starks of Winterfell) is their commitment to, and support for, the men of the Night's Watch. In the face of dwindling numbers and the shrinking of the order, the Night's Watch would have collapsed but for the aid of a great house like the Mathiws. Whether it be supplies or coin, Western Cliff has, for 2000 years, been the stoutest friend to the Watch and is wholly convinced of its purpose and the dangers that exist beyond the Wall. The house words - Eyes to the North - speak to this. Weary of being scorned as mad men funding a chase for magic and monsters in the far wastes, the Mathiws have quietly reinforced their support and siphon off a significant portion of their own supplies and silver to maintain the existence of the Night's Watch. Many a Lord of Western Cliff has ranged with the Watch beyond the Wall and it was there that Lord Steffon was said to have gouged out the eye that now rests in the amber of Squall's pommel. For 20 generations, one son of the Lord (provided he is not the heir) has become a sworn brother of the Order.

House Name: Nuin

Sigil: A grey weirwood bearing its roots on a field of black with a single white star above the weirwood.

House words: Embrace the Eternal.

Unofficial words: We are the night (Used as a war cry when on the field of battle).

Location: House Nuin holds no strongholds or hold claim to any land but range across the North and are reported to have been seen as far south as Harrenhall.

Religion: The old gods.

House Weapon: A weirwood longbow (supposedly cut from a branch of the weirwood in Winterfell’s godswood as a gift from the King of the North upon the house’s creation) with obsidian tipped arrows.

Sworn to: The Starks of Winterfell

History: House Nuin was formed when a daughter of Winterfell, whilst secretly infatuated with a minor son of house reed, was found to be pregnant. Thinking that the father of the boy was base-born the King of the North forced his daughter to send the child to live with his father but after pleading with her father to allow the boy to live with them her father conceded that he could live in winterfell until he was of an age at which time he had to leave but because the boy’s mother was of high birth he would be able to start his own minor house sworn to winterfell. When the boy came to form house Nuin instead of claiming a stronghold or lands he asked the King of the North that his house be allowed to roam the North. He used this to form a house of rangers, scouts and hunters who to this day are known to be the best archers in all of westeros and serve as scouts for every house in the North.

For Centuries the Nuins have been married to the sons and daughters of Greywater Watch making the Nuins smaller than most men but taller than the crannogmen of the Neck. The house is known to be loved by the smallfolk of the north who have styled every Lord Nuin ‘The Prince of Shadows’ for the house’s black and grey colours and the seeming ability for the house to have men hidden everywhere in the north.

The current house Nuin, led by Lord Rykard Nuin, has 1800 fighting men spread across north.

When Robb Stark was declared King in the North and called his banners, Rykard Nuin sent 200 men to scout for his army. Whilst the northern host was warring in the south, Lord Nuin split his remaining host leaving 300 men in the North taking the rest of his men to the Neck in case of an invasion from the South. After the fall of Winterfell and reports of Robb Stark’s death, Rykard Nuin pulled all of his men and the women and children of house Nuin back to Greywater Watch to seek council with Howland Reed.

OH FUCK

lol
