Mafia 85: The Nightmare After Christmas

House Targaryen

Recommended Posts

Christmas is gone.

So how do we cope with the hangover, unwanted gifts, last minute post-Christmas-to-pretend-you-bought-on-time shopping, unpleasant relatives, and waking up too early too start your Christmas day?

Well, the best way we know is a Mafia Game!

I (Zar) am hoping to start the game on January 2nd, 2012 (and make it the first of the year!). The great Mina-Mod will be co-modding. If, however, enough players sign up before that time and you want to start early (12/30) I will gladly accept, but there will be no penalization for those who over-party during New Years. After general consensus it seems the best date to start the game is January 2nd, 2012.

We are looking to host an all-roled game. So get ready for some Liquorice flavored Mafia.

PM House Targaryen or me (Zar) to sign up!

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure

Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. The mods will post maximum time limits for the length of a day on the game thread. If no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase

During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day. See the role list for details.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics

To vote for a player: bold that player's name.

To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.

To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).

To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote or unvote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions

You may only vote during the day phase. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions

The use of bold should be limited to voting, except in some cases and for some specific roles. If you want to emphasize a player's name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined

A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day

The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the players fail to vote for any action, once the time limit for the day has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene

The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions as well as any player deaths.

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. See the role list for details.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action

If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear in the description of the role: see the role list. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. The game will also have a time limit on the maximum length of a night. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible: you may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM

If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM

You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM

In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM

If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action

PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it. In this case the action originally indicated will be performed.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit

The time limit for the night begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions

Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene

The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame

The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions

The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in the game thread.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene

The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early

The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers

When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

RULES

All players must ..

A1) Have an account on the mafia discussion board, with the same account name as on this board.

A2) Log in and view the thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons

A3) Post at least once every 24 hours. Any player who has not posted within the last 24 hours will be automatically modkilled, whether or not the mods announce this on the thread.

The mods may grant extensions to this limit in some cases (if so, they will give details in a later post). However, if they have not posted on the thread to announce an extension before the 24 hour limit is reached, no extension will be granted, whatever may have been said elsewhere. Please contact the mods as early as possible if you wish to request an extension.

A4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit

A5) Treat everybody else playing with courtesy and respect

A6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

A7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if they feel you are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so.

Players must not ...

B1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of a faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

B2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

B3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

B4) Give anybody access to any of their accounts (including game alts, if the game is using them), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

B5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

B6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread.

B7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.

B8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts accidently made after death should be immediately edited blank.

B9) Make any bets about the game.

B10) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

AND JUST SO YOU KNOW

C1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

C2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

C3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something.

-------------------------

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Please not that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

D1) Share any information from the spoiler thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

D2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

D3) Make personal attacks on players in the game or on posters in the spoiler thread itself

D4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and/or to be reported to the metamods.

LENGTH OF DAYS AND NIGHTS

Days will be thirty-two hours long, nights eight hours long.

DAY AND NIGHT ACTIONS

All actions must be sent in a PM titled either "Day Actions" or "Night Actions". Otherwise, your action will not count.

If for any reason, you are not sending in a Night Action, please be kind enough to send a "No Action" night PM. Since this is an all roled game, I will try to hold the night until I get a PM from the all living players able perform Night Actions during that night scene. However, if you are just not going to be available during the Night please try to send provisional Night PMs or Contingency PMs. I do not want to hold the Night unless it's necessary. If you feel you need time, PM me and I will consider your request.

What you know about the setting.

Christmas has come and gone and all the nice kids of the world we know (and the worlds we read about) got their share of presents. But some kids, like little Joffrey Baratheon, did not make it this year into the nice list (or ever, for that matter), and thus did not get any gifts.

So what does a Kid like Joffrey do on a toyless Christmas morning?

Harass his siblings, obviously.

But little did Joffrey know that his whining was heard by Krampus, the king of all naught. Delighted with his kitty slaughtering, Krampus decided to grant Joffrey some fun, by dispatching a few of his most trusted minions in disguise and letting them mix around Tommens and Myrcellas new toys while breathing life into them. "Let him delight with death", Krampus thought.

As much fun it was for Joffrey to find random servants gutted here and there, Queen Cersei did not find this amusing.

"The Last thing I need is my peasants fearing toys instead of me." Cersei said. "Use a bottle of wildfire and throw them all into the pit. Let's see their wickedness burn"

"Nooo!" complained Tommen. Some of these toys are my favorites!

"I will get you new ones, sweet boy."

"We do not want new toys!" argued Myrcella. "These are irreplaceable."

And I don't want new servants. Thought the Queen.

"Off with you, children. I will give this some thought."

And so did the kids leave the Queens chambers.

"Living Toys." Muttered Cersei. "And one team of killers roaming among them. What nonsense have these dragons unleashed in Westeros?"

"Your, grace, If I may?" The soft-spoken voice came from the corner of the room.

The eunuch. His presence always caused Cersei to be restless, but he had proven useful.

"Lord Varys."

"Such an inconvenience the loss of your servants. But, have you given thought of how useful these toys could be? Strange looking artifacts, indeed. Easily regarded as wonders from far-away lands. Perfect to keep an eye on your enemies?"

Cersei glared at the eunuch suspiciously. "What are you suggesting? We cannot have a havoc let loose in Kings landing."

"Absolutely not, Your Grace. But if these artifacts really have a mind of their own, they may help weed of the useless by themselves."

"How so?" Cersei was now curious.

"I have heard of a type of trial that is in place in lands far beyond the Shadows. Let them investigate each other and lynch the ones they deem guilty. Whatever the outcome, we shall be left with the ones we may have a use for."

Cersei considered Lord Varys' proposal while taking another sip from her third cup of Dornish Red of the day. "Very well, Lord Varys, do as you wish, and keep me informed. I shall not interfere. If anything, at least the Kids won't be entirely upset about losing all of their treasures."

And so it begins.

-There are no roleless innocents in this game.

-There is no mod CF.

-Some of Tommen's toys are battery-operated and thus run out of charges. Abilities may have charge times, or cool-off periods before they can use their abilities again. Players may start off charged or with no charge.

The following roles are guaranteed to be in the game and aligned with the evil faction.

Killer:

There are three killers in the game. If there is more than one active killer belonging to the same faction, they can communicate off-thread at all times. Each night, the killers can send in (collectively) the name of one player they wish to target. Assuming that this player is not somehow protected and that no other role intervenes in any other way, this player will die at the end of the night.

Sympathiser:

There is a sympathizer in the game. This role is allied with the Faceless Man factions, and knows the identity of at least one of the killers belonging to their faction, though the killers do not know of them. If investigated, they will come up "not a killer". If there are multiple sympathizers in the game, they may be able to communicate with each other off-thread (this will be made clear in their role PM).

The following roles may be used and may be combined with one or more other roles. Not all roles will be used. All roles may have additional limitations, modifications, or flavor text beyond those described, and may be given to any faction.

Possible Roles May Include:

Activity Booster:

A player with this role has the ability to temporarily remove charge times a role may have.

Actor:

The actor is a player who can only place a vote if his vote will cause someone to be lynched. If you try to vote, it will not appear on the votecount.

Apprentice Finder:

At the start of the game they have no special abilities. However when a Finder (specified by the mods – the identity of whom may or may not be known by the Apprentice Finder) dies, the Apprentice Finder inherits all remaining investigations and limitations of the Dead Finder. If the Finder is Night-Killed then Apprentice Finder will be told the result of the last investigation.

Battery Drain:

The opposite of an Activity Booster, a player with this ability drains the target's batteries and resets the charge time for all abilities to zero.

Bomb:

A player that, when lynched, is awarded the ability to kill a player in their mob as they die. The player must PM the mods the name of the player they wish to kill before the End of the Night Scene following their lynch.

Bulletproof:

This player is immune to nightkills and daykills. Roleblocks of any sort do not affect this ability.

Charmer:

At night, a charmer may send in the name of a player whom they wish to charm. If successful, the charmer will prevent the player from performing his special abilities. Charmers cannot prevent kills. Charmer supersedes guard and jailer if they both target each other.

Commuter:

The commuter is a role that may choose to leave Town at night, thus making them ineligible to be targeted by Night actions. By extension, they cannot use any Night actions they may have. This resolves before roleblocks.

Coroner Finder:

After a lynch or a kill, the Coroner finder may ask to investigate the corpse. Assuming no interference by other roles, the mods will PM them to inform if the player was a "killer" or "not a killer".

Finder:

At night, the finder can send in the name of one player they wish to be investigated. Assuming no interference by other roles, the mods will PM them as soon as day begins to tell them if that player is "killer" or "not a killer".

Fool:

A Fool is a player that cannot place a vote on his own, because he does not trust his judgement. He or she must choose a player to cast a vote for him before the end of the Day Phase via PM to the Mods.

Friend:

Friends do not have the ability to perform any special actions unless indicated by their Role PM. However, they do NOT know their friend(s) faction, and can communicate off-thread with them in a secret forum on the perendination board at all times. There may be multiple groups of friends in the game; if so they will not be aware of each other.

Guard:

At night the guard can PM the name of one player to the mods. Assuming no interference by other roles, That player will be blocked from taking night actions. However, if they belong to a group that can perform collective night actions, and at least one other member of the group is still alive, the action will not be blocked. If two guards target each other, they cannot perform any other abilities. Guard supersedes jailer if they both target each other.

Healer:

At night the healer can PM the name of one player other than themselves to the mods. Assuming no interference by other roles, That player will be healed, and will not die if targeted at night.

Insane:

Well, the first step to not being insane is acknowledging it. Right? It just happens you'll have to figure your sanity or lack thereof on your own, since insanity will make your ability do the exact opposite of what is described. If you are not told in your role PM that there is a chance you may be insane, you may safely assume that you are sane.

Inventor:

You are provided with a given set of items allowing you to grant one-shot night abilities to other players. Once you have created your items during the Day Phase, the tools for making one break and cannot be used again. Players will be informed that they have received an item after the lynch scene.

Invisible:

This player is immune to any kill or find night action once during the game. If targeted by a killer they will not die. If targeted by a finder the finder will not get a result. Note that the player will be immune to one kill OR one find night action (any ability with the name "finder" in the title), and loses his invisibility status the first time he's targeted by either role. Roleblocks do not affect his invisibility status.

Jack of All Trades:

You happen to have several one-shot abilities. Once you have used one of your abilities, you cannot use it again.

Jailer:

You may choose a target to protect from kills; however, this will also Roleblock your target. If two jailers target each other, they cannot perform any other abilities. (Since roleblocking resolves first, this would nullify the protective aspect of the role.)

Lynch-Protector:

This player can make another player lynch proof for the next day. Each night the player can PM the name of one player other than themselves to the mod. Assuming no interference by other roles, as soon as Day is announced the Mods will reveal the player who cannot be lynched that day.

Martyr:

At night the martyr can PM the name of one player to the mods. That player will be healed, and will not die if targeted at night. However, if the player the martyr protects is targeted, the martyr will die in their place.

Merciful:

A merciful player cannot bear to inflict pain on someone. He cannot cast the hammer vote on a person. If he tries, the vote will not show up.

Miller:

A player that is not a killer, but whenever investigated by a sane Finder will appear as a killer. Millers are informed if they are millers.

Night-Action Finder:

At night, the finders can send in the name of one player they wish to be investigated. Assuming no interference by other roles, the mods will PM them as soon as day begins to tell them if that player "Performed a night action" or "Did not Perform a night action".

Ninja:

During the day, the ninja has the ability to kill another player. To do so they should post on the thread to say in bold ."I am a ninja, and I kill <name of="" player="">" Both this player and the ninja are now dead, and the day ends, as soon as this is posted. If anybody other than a ninja posts this message the mods will not be amused.

Persuader:

A persuader may target a player to convince during the Night Phase. If successful, the persuader will control that players vote and must inform the Mods via PM whom the player will place a vote upon.

Psychiatrist:

The only person capable of diagnosing insanity. The Psychiatrist may choose to target a given player. If no other roles interfere, the psychiatrist will be informed if that player is sane or insane the next day. (Edited for clarity.)

Schizophrenic:

A player with this role may choose at night to target a player and which will either randomly be: 1) protected 2) inspected him, 3) killed or 4) nothing would happen.

Role Finder:

A role finder may target a player to learn his role (but not his alignment).

Soldier

In a 1 vs. 1 scenario, if the Soldier is the last man standing of his faction, his team wins the game.

Unblockable:

This ability makes a kill unstoppable by any abilities such as heal, jails, guards, martyr protections, commuter, bulletproof, or invisibility status.

Vanilla-Maker:

The vanilla maker may target a player during the Night Phase, and if successful, the player will lose all his special abilities for the rest of all the game.

Vigilante:

The vigilante has the ability to kill one player at night over the course of the game. To do so they should PM the mods the name of that player. Assuming no other role intervenes, that player will be reported dead at the start of the next day. If the kill fails for the actions of a guard, the vigilante will not lose the ability to kill. If the kill fails for some other reason the vigilante will not be able to kill another night.

Watcher:

A watcher may choose a player to target at night. If other roles do not intervene, he will be informed if that player is targeted (although not by whom or what).</name>

Alright everyone should have their role PMs by now. The Timer will start at 1:00 PM Santo Domingo Time (12:00 PM EST).

Mina's edit: a new abilities list (with some new or changed abilities, and with more information) will be up at the start of the game.

Also, there is a non-zero chance that roles may be slightly modified within a couple of hours of the game start.

Barbie

Hey Barbie, wanna go for a ride? Life in plastic...it's fantastic ;)

Also worth noting

  • All millers are informed of being millers as per the mods. There are no secret millers.
  • All people with sanity issues are informed of this fact. I was tempted to get them to claim and get them treated but if they have sanity issues AND a role surely they can work out the best way to play it. I mean a Finder with sanity issues is likely to get opposite results. It might be worth claiming if you have a role you feel is useless without being cured, but maybe not yet.

It's been two days already, but, before the real game has actually started:

Happy New Year to everyone! I wish you a pleasant, successful and fulfilling year.

Happy New Year to you too! Wish there were like buttons.

I've seen I, Robot. I know how this story ends.
