............yes......Swansea.....................not something I'd normally advertise.......

Oh and I'm doing a joint honours.....history and politics.... :)

Haha can't say I've ever been, it's probably not as bad as you think! The west country is awesome, makes a nice change from London :D Ah cool! Someone else on here is doing that as well, but somewhere else in the UK.. bah, my memory :dunce:

I can't get anyone I know to read them! My husband reads books in fits and starts and rarely at that. My son never, ever reads and my daughter, who is an avid reader, has no interest in them at all. As far as friends and colleagues go, no-one's heard of GRRM apart from one chap I work with who watched most of the TV series but shies away from reading the books. Oh and I often get the 'oh no, I don't like fantasy' line, even though they've never tried it! I'll not give in though, I'll harp on and on about them until they're sick to death of hearing about it!

Haha good plan! I'm continuously posting pictures and stuff on my facebook, how nobody takes the bait is beyond me. Maybe they just hide my posts  tbh, if someone other than the friend who told me about them, because I totally trust his judgment, had told me about them, I probably would have given the same line xD

Oh, I see what you are doing there, young lady! :lmao:

Get away! We're not all lionesses on the prowl like you are :leer:

I can say I didn't get into the series until last December, when I was looking for something to occupy my mind, as I was extremely bored at the time. So I read the first book in about two weeks, and was hooked. I had also only heard about the show on commercials, and I didn't pay it much attention until I finished GOT, when I watched the first season when they were being replayed. Best. Decision. Ever. In 2 months I had finished the next 4 books, and my love of ASOIAF has brought me to this forum, where I meet interesting new people every day who love the books and show as much as me. Purpose for living: RESTORED!

Yes........maybe.......but then again you've never been here have you?? :P It's a bitter disappointment trust me.... <_<

I won't bother paying to get in then! I don't think I've ever been to Swansea, been to somewhere in Wales.. and it rained every. single. day. Are you a Welshman at heart? If so, why didn't you go elsewhere to university, if it's so bad? xD

I keep telling my friend about it, hoping I can convince him to read it. It's unlikely, however; he read on of the bits with Shae in it and now he's convinced it's erotica.

I have no idea why but this made me laugh way too hard

Let your friend read the FPM and then ask him if he found that erotic.

Well, you can't blame the man, really. It can get pretty heavy  It creeps me out though, because all I can see is the GRRM troll face whenever I read a sex scene.. :ack:

There are not sooo many fans in Germany, it is maybe because the books appear in idontknowhowmany volumes and so very late. Apart from that I don't like the translation, the names in German are somewhat ... wrong. And the series come out about six months too late in German tv, awful! Fortunately there is the web.

I think it's okay to say that the translation is bad. It simply is.

I tend to read books in the translated version, but this time it wasn't bearable at all (not only because of the names), so I brought the american version.

It seems that the old translation was actually quite okay [before Random House brought the former publisher (Blanvalet) and used it as their trash-pile], then they let two incarnations of incompetence "work over the old translation" - now not only the names are wrong, but there are also a lot of typos and grammar errors and some sentences just seem wrong - and the old translation is sold for up to 50 Euro, depending on the antiquariat.

On Topic:

I normaly don't read Fantasy (my last Fantasy book before ASoIaF was over 15 years ago^^), but a friend of mine gave me a hint about the tv show, and as my partner and I were bored around Christmas, we watched it - and suddenly I just had to have the books.

Now I'm trying to get the friend, who introduced me to the tv show, to read the books - till now futile, but hope dies last. :)

A welshman at heart? No, not really..........but I'm already in my second year, so I suppose I'll stick it out until the end now... :)

And yes it does rain quite often here!

I started hearing more and more about GOT the TV series, learned it was based on books, saw AGOT in a bookstore--the one with the cool cover (Ned [sean Bean] on the Throne with Ice.), picked it up, never looked back.

At the moment I've gotten my sister and mother into the TV series. They both liked it, and my mothers just about to finish ASOS. My sister, to my eternal sadness. is parroting the same thing many on here have come up against: she doesn't have time to read, the books are too long, etc.

B.S.

What she's really saying--and what I think a lot of the people who say that are really saying--is that they don't want to spend the time they waste on Facebook or youtube or whatever on reading.

That's probably the snobbiest thing I've ever said :dunno: But man does that excuse get on my nerves, probably more than it should. :bang:

Well, I also do hear this excuse a lot (and not only about ASOIAF) - and mostly from people who don't take work home, but do all their duties at the university, while I work well at night, so I do work a lot at home in the evening, so I also tend to not see it as the true reason, as I always wonder, that this people do with their time instead of reading, as all their duties are done. :dunno:

Fair enough! Plymouth constantly falls foul to the great wind god Pazuzu <_<

Oh I agree. Though we're all on here, when we could be reading :P I joke, of course. It's almost like there's a generation gap between me and my younger siblings, when there's actually only about 5 years difference. As I said earlier - too much, too young. I feel older than I am :drunk:

As a student, I'm constantly surprised at how many people are spending their time getting drunk and sleeping. I don't know how they fit it in! Clearly to the detriment to their grades. Unfortunately, I'm one of the boring lot who does their work, volunteers, and does extra stuff to make my CV look good :dunno: Any free time goes to reading, being online, and shopping, plus occasional socialising with friends. Mayhaps I'm boring, but my grades are decent enough, and that's what I'm getting into thousands of pounds of debt for :D

I've got a group of guys who read the books at work.

Apart from them I have tried to get a couple of people to get into it, the girl didn't seem to get past the first 50 pages stating there was too much to keep a track of, the guy just let it gather dust in his locker not sure if he ever opened it. My dad wanted nothing to do with it as he wouldn't want to tax his old mind and other buddies tell me they are too busy to commit themselves to a fantasy world.

In other words I am surrounded by a bunch of shits.
