What Would Have Been Eddard's Best Move?

Eddard's best move would have been to rally support the moment that it was clear that Bob was going to die. He should have sat his own ass on the throne as Lord Protector.

Then after a month or two of dealing with his adversaries, he could have safely handed the throne to Stannis after exposing the young king to be an imposter.

I think that this would have been the only way he could have saved his head. For the breif few hours before Cercei did all of her dirty work, everyone was looking up to Eddard to see what he was going to do. This proves that everyone was ready to support him until he started talking all crazy about Joffrey being a bastard, and forcing Cercei to act quickly.

Take Renly's offer to seize Cersei & the children, have her prosecuted, and call back Stannis in secret. Remember, Ned's sole reasoning for giving Cersei the chance to flee KL was because he was sure that Robert would kill her and likely the children as well. However, upon Robert's death that issue is removed and nothing should've stopped him from arresting Cersei the minute Roberts eyes closed forever. Siding with Renly gives him more men than either the Lannisters or the City Watch have and it keeps his own men alive. He wouldve had an irate Renly to deal with upon Stannis' arrival, but the kingdom wouldve followed the line of succession. Besides, Renly would've been foolish to wage war on Stannis (as King) & Ned as it would've been a two front war.

Renly had about 50-100 retainers in King's Landing, the Gold Cloaks were probably around 1000 at the time. Littlefinger was playing on a different level than Cersei, Ned or Renly, he was calling the shots, and he wanted Ned out of the way.

True, but the Gold Cloaks as a whole werent bought off, just their commander & they followed him & his orders. At least that's my opinion. Ned had close to 50 men in KL at that point and Renly promised him 100. Had he taken Renly's offer and acted that night (cant remember if that was the plan in the book or just the show) then everything else would've been moot. Ned's men wouldn't have died the next morning and Cersei and her children would've been in custody. Ned could've taken the letter before the council (Ser Barristan especially) and I find it doubtful any of them would've shredded the letter. LF may have plotted to betray Ned later with the help of the Cloaks, but that's assuming Ned didn't book it for Winterfell as soon as possible which he likely would've.

Ser Barristan would've backed him and along with him the Kingsguard (likely 3 more of them if not 4) and It wouldve been hard to ride against that force. 4 KG against 3 doesnt seem as daunting, but when you weigh that with the respect that many of the realm had for Barristan Selmy its likely more knights wouldve risen to the cause. IMO
