Game of Thrones coins

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start a new thread to let people ask questions about the coins that I am making under license with George. The idea is to create coins just as they might be if they were to fall from Westeros through an interdimensional portal into your hand. I've been doing coins for GOT since 2003, when George's books were still rather obscure and HBO had never heard of them.

This post will be edited from time to time as new items are added and the list below is updated. The date of the most recent revision will be at the bottom.

Here's a list of the types that have been issued so far giving their weight, the type and fineness of the metal or alloy, the registration of the obverse to the reverse, the mintage, and the year(s) made. "Medal" registration means that you flip the coin side to side to read the reverse... like it would be on a medal. "Coin" registration means that you flip the coin heads over heels to see the other side, so the reverse is upside down with respect to the obverse, typical on real-world ciurculating coinage

Collecting coins from a world of fantasy is not quite the same as ordinary coin collecting.

But I'm also asking for ideas for new coins. There are many MANY coins that COULD exist in this world, hundreds at least... but it makes sense to choose only those that have some particularly interesting about them, either as an object or via a connection to the story. Currently on the short list of projects are a silver "moon" of Dorne, a silver stag of the Iron Islands, a silver moon of Casterly Rock, and at least one gold dragon.

What else would be cool?

Have fun! Tom

As I was saddened with the death of one of the members of your coin making company. The artist? I was happy to have purchase one of his designs. I purchased 3 of his Eddard Stark pfennigs, and they are quite beautiful and authentic to the period and look. One was specially made into a pendant for me too! They sit next to my collection of GRRM books!

My thought is if Eddard had some minted as him as Hand of the King. Wouldn't Tywin have some also when he was reigning as hand during the Mad King?

Or how about coins for each of the kingdoms when they were separate before Aegons conquest?

Yes I'm sad that Greg Franck-Weiby has passed on. His artistry and knowledge will be hard to live up to. But life goes on! Yes there are a vast number of possible coins that could exist in George's world. Each of the kingdoms would have had coins before the conquest. And indeed after the conquest it would be normal for the provinces to continue mint coin in the name of their lord, though never to show him wearing a crown! So the Torrhen Stark stag shows him with crown, as king. But Eddard's pfennig shows him bare-headed, as Warden. Such coin would have been used to pay tithe to the crown. The crown has the option to just spend them as they are, or (in the case of a beheaded rebel warden) they'd likely melt them down to restrike them.

Torrhen is the only pre-conquest coin I've done so far, but many are possible. An engraver and friend of mine and Greg's, Joe Paonessa, has undertaken a new one. It seems that Balon Greyjoy declared independance and himself as Lord of the Iron Islands after Robert's death. Everyone knows it's expensive to keep an army in the field, so they have to go with coin. Balon apparently had been saving up a lot of silver that was supposed to be sent to the crown and never quite got out of his treasuries... so he had his mint boys drag out an IRON ISLANDS kraken die from the old days and knocked out a new die for himself as king, with crown! While the army was getting itself ready to debark, the mint was working in shifts 24/7 to get enough coin made to support them.

So many possibilities!

Have fun! Tom

Faceless Man gone viral?

After taking almost two years to sell the first 500 of the Faceless Man iron coins, the second 500 have sold in only about two weeks! I have been packing and shipping just as fast as I possibly can! It looks like a large number of denizens of a forum primarily about handmade knives, the "Usual Suspect Network" have adopted the Faceless Man as their mascot and challenge coin! I was forced to cancel a number of roll orders in order to keep enough singles on hand. The good news is that I am currently rolling and punching and preparing blanks towards the upcoming 4th pressing which I hope will take place within the next couple of weeks. I am aiming to make about 600 coins in this batch.

I am still offering the same direct paypal deal to the members of this forum... singles are $10 each with free shipping in US, ($1 extra per coin outside). When rolls again become available they will be $60 for a roll of 12 coins. You can email me directly: maringer at arkansas dot net

Yeah definitely a golden dragon, but you should also do the coin from the Mystery Knight where Daemon Blackfyre I had coins minted.

Well you might get a few more people wanting to order iron coins in a few week's time.

A Summer Isles coin?

A Kraken coin? Once you declare yourself a king you need to start using your own currency. Can't be having Joffs or Bob's head on the coins being used in the Iron Islands.

Okay you're like the fourth person that's mentioned this, but I don't remember anything about it. Do you have any references to this period? Which book is it in? Is there a wiki page on it? It sounds interesting though. Insurrectionary coins often have an unique flavor because of the emergency nature of the event. The minters would be under extreme pressure to get coins out FAST because the ruler is chomping at the bit to spend money (and rebels seldom get credit from ironmongers). So the coins might have interesting features dictated by conditions and time-constraints.

I haven't read it I've just listened to the audiobook but its where Dunk couldn't read but he felt the coin and knew it didn't spell a Targaryen king. In the mystery knight http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Blackfyre_Rebellion Theres mention of it in the first paragraph after War

Okay! Thanks for that reference. Anybody recall or have at hand any other details about the coin? Size? Metal? Worth?

Look at the coins before taking them. Here, tell me what you see." The dragon spun

through the air. Will tried to catch it, but it bounced off his fingers and fell to the ground. He

had to get down on his knees to find it. When he did, he turned it over twice before saying,

"This one's good, m'lord. There's a dragon on the one side and a king on t'other

The face on the coin was young, clean-shaved, handsome.

Hi Zappotack:

Oh excellent! Yes that helps immensely! Thank you!

Buster:

Typically it's just a four or five days, but if the customs people decide to be interested in it for some reason it can be delayed as much as two weeks. Fingers crossed!

Your'e very welcome good ser! The fourth pressing of the Faceless Man iron coin is well underway. Rolls of a dozen will again be available to ship on Friday June 1, a week from today. Pre-orders are now being accepted for delivery beginning then!

I'm very interested to hear any stories about people using these coins or meeting others with them. Also, the finish may seem rough when new, but that's because they're heavily waxed. Rubbing with fingers or a dry cloth will buff the wax and you'll see the smooth metal underneath. A bit of oil will take the wax entirely off if you wish... all depends what you want it to look and feel like. Ideally this is a pocket piece that is carried constantly and will grow in beauty with wear. I wanted to make the rolls "archival" so that if somebody decides to tuck one back in a safe for fifty years, it will still look the same when it comes out... so that's why the wax is so heavy on them.
