Happy Ent
Whispering Wood – South of Fairmarkt: Robb's army needs 5 days in heavy rain South of Fairmarket – Oldstones: Robb's army needs 8 days in heavy rain Sandor's "grave" - Saltpans: Arya rides for six days Fairmarket – The Twins: "less than a day's ride" according to Jaime
Ran
The last one is obviously wrong. GRRM's either made a slip and meant "Fairmarket" in Jaime's quote or he meant (or at some point decided to mean) "the Twins" in Edwyn's Frey statement of where Ryman was (more or less) when he and his party were killed. I'm thinking he decided the latter -- much bolder to hang him two leagues outside of the Twins than two leagues outside of Fairmarket. *adds it to the list of notes for George*
Happy Ent
Well, one could make it work by saying that "The Twins" means "lands directly ruled by The Twins". That would make sense in the context of the Jaime quote, because we can assume that Frey soldiers are patrolling the borders of Frey country. This area might well begin just north of the bridge across the Blue Fork we know is at Fairmarket.

Ran
HE, I very much doubt that the Frey lands run down as far as Fairmarket. That's a pretty huge expanse of territory, greater than just about any example we have. I think "the Twins" was being used to mean the castle, in part because I don't recall anyone ever substituting a seat as representing the more general territory (the nearest we get to it, IIRC, is the use of 'Dragonstone' as representing, in general, the islands sworn to it -- but this may be a peculiarity of the royal seat, or the fact that they're islands, etc.) "Frey lands," "lands sworn to the Twins," etc. would be the language I would have expected. The Adequate Jon
From Ashara's post on bird speeds, Ashara's message, I assume a raven can cover 100 leagues in a day. Therefore, divide each number in this table by 100 to get the number of days for a raven to cover each distance. I came up with these distances based on the length of the Wall equalling 100 leagues_ Distances are in leagues_ _________________KL____SS____CR____HG____RR__Pyke_Eyrie_Twins____WF__Wall____WH____OT____DS____SE King's Landing____0___310___270___250___190___310___210___270___530___720___400___360___140___130 Sunspear________310_____0___500___350___500___600___510___590___850__1010___710___380___370___190 Casterly Rock___270___500_____0___200___160___130___330___250___510___730___430___270___380___370 Highgarden______250___350___200_____0___290___320___420___400___680___890___570___110___380___270 Riverrun________190___500___160___290_____0___140___170___110___390___600___280___390___260___320 Pyke____________310___600___130___320___140_____0___290___160___390___600___320___400___390___440 Eyrie___________210___510___330___420___170___290_____0___150___340___500___200___530___170___320 Twins___________270___590___250___400___110___160___150_____0___280___490___180___500___310___400 Winterfell______530___850___510___680___390___390___340___280_____0___210___130___780___500___650 The Wall________720__1010___730___890___600___600___500___490___210_____0___320___990___660___820 White Harbor____400___710___430___570___280___320___200___180___130___320_____0___670___360___520 Old Town________360___380___270___110___390___400___530___500___780___990___670_____0___490___370 Dragon Stone____140___370___380___380___260___390___170___310___500___660___360___490_____0___180 Storm's End_____130___190___370___270___320___440___320___400___650___820___520___370___180_____0 These numbers aren't super-accurate. I used a home-made scale on a piece of cardboard and measured off a map that I forget where I downloaded it from. News of Margery's imprisonment goes from KL to Storm's End and Maidenpool and back to KL in less than 3 days. The Adequate Jon
From ACOK: Stone Mill (where Edmure won his battle on the Red Fork) to Riverrun is 2 days ride. Paul H
Weather, road conditions, wind and even the horses being ridden would cause the inequity of travel times from one day to the next. A rainy day would make the road muddy and you would need to be more careful riding to avoid killing your horse. Bad winds or tides would cause delays or such for ships. Ender
thanks, the adequate jon. but help me please: how many kilometers are in one league? is that the same as a mile, or something completely different? A Google search of "1 league in kilometers" yields: 1 league = 5.55600 kilometers (This is one of Google's great features). Also, 1 league = 3.45233834 miles That's assuming that a Westerosi league is the same as our league. Interestingly, "The league, as a unit of length, expresses the distance a person, or a horse, can walk in 1 hour of time " according to Wikipedia. You learn something every day. Barba
one league is three miles. I think one mile is 1.6 km (one nautical mile is 1.8km, but I don't think nautical miles are what we're talking about). That means one league is 4.8km, but I round it at 5km
