I do have to own up to saying Catelyn like Cait-lin, it kinda annoys me that it's spelt with an e in there if you don't need it, why not just call her Catlyn? Why GRRM, why?I always pronounce Catelyn as Kate-Lynn cause Caitlin is my a daughter's name.Isnt there a charater, Aenus (or similar spelling)? How do I pronounce that? Although it could of course be shortened to Cat - as many girls today do with Catherine names and the variations thereof.Maester is measter or at a stretch master - not maister.Gendry should be Jendry.And on and on it goes. I hope when someone like Peter Jackson makes the movie versions of ASOIAF that he will not only stick to the stories in the books but use the correct pronunciation of names and words. Perhaps this has something to do with relative glam between our age and theirs. i wanted to see deep green cobalt and golden armor.By far the silliest outfit is the huge feather boa Jon is wearing. "Lie-sa" for Lysa sounds wrong to me, for example. If the name can sensibly pronounced in the same way as a modern equivalent, then I reckon it's probably meant to be. Eg Petyr = Peter, Catelyn = Caitlin, Lysa = Lisa. The different spellings are meant to evoke a medieval feel, harking back to a time when spellings were less fixed, such as when Shakespeare sometimes used to spell his own name Shaxper, or whatever he felt like on the day. I don't know why, they could learn how to say a couple of names, don't they???So for me, the only thing that matters is how GRRM says it. Why would you call your daughter a name with the word/sound 'lie' in it?I agree with Matt Sand that the 'y' instead of an 'i' is just to give the names a Ye Olde Worlde look to them, but the pronunciations are essentially the same as we would pronounce them. The problem is that my native tongue is spelled as written, so therefore while reading I spell the names as written, like Jaime = Yah-ih-meh, Tywin = Two-win and my favourite, Margaery = Mar-gah-eh-ruh.But I will never approve of Petyr spelled as Peter. All G's are pronounced (it has three variants according to the context: velar voiced occlusive /g/, velar voiced fricative /ɣ/ or velar voiceless fricative /x/). The silent letter is the H :)I pronounced Daenerys the Spanish way, marking all the vowels: /daenéris/, and the same with Targaryen, marking all the r's: /targárjen/. After watching the show I changed it, but when I'm discussing the character with my friends I always go back to my old mispronunciation habits xD. I have problems concerning Aeron (and Aegon, for that matter). I can never see that and read Cat-Lynn.I always pronounced 'Damphair' as "Dam-fair" before I saw GRRM confirm that it was "Damp-hair" in a youtube interview :/Really? As far as the rest I'm commited to Lisa, Peter, Caitlyn, Jendry, Marjery - the spelling was different in the ye olde days, but the names are the same.And I'll fight to the death that Maester is pronounced Master or My ster. The root word meaning an expert or specialist... Like when someone, I don't know, knows all about beer and you call him the Beermeister, or the leader of an orchestra is referred to as Maestro.
